Good News for Old Blighty

My friends at Harper Collins Voyager have confirmed that the British edition of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will also be released on July 12 of this year, simultaneously with the American edition.

(Please ignore what it says on Amazon.UK. I am sure they will get it right eventually)

Here's the British cover:

Publication dates in other countries will, of course, be dependent on the speed of the translations. Which cannot begin until I turn in the final manuscript. So I had best get back to that right now.

An interesting comment from HarperCollins Voyager's UK editor at The Bookseller:

"Even without the few remaining chapters which George is still completing it's a monster: over 2000 pages in manuscript. But (as his publisher I can't believe I'm saying this) it's been well worth waiting for. It's a towering achievement, a landmark novel."

Nice! I'm gussing that the 2,000 MS-page count is a result of being transferred to Voyager's formatting? 2,000 MS pages would be a third longer than A STORM OF SWORDS!

It's not 2000 pages in manuscript on MY computer. At the moment it's a little over 1500, though I have some chapters yet to complete. I am guesstimating a final page count close to that of A STORM OF SWORDS, in the neighborhood of 1550 pages.

Some of my publishers have trouble converting my WordStar files, however. Lots and lots of blank space can get added during the conversion process, depending on how they do the conversion. So you're right: it is a formatting question.

Do you really use that? Quite old format...is there a reason?

Just curious heh ;)

Warm Regards!

It's a classic. Never been improved on.

Re: WordStar..?
let me guess... its all command line and this lets you never have to take your hands off the keyboard. Since you have used it for so long you know all the special keys. So it is faster for you than Microsoft Word. Since if you switch to a word processor where you have to use a mouse, it will slow you down since you have to take your hands off the keyboard.

1,000 years from now, the last remaining copy of Game of Thrones is going to be discovered by an archeologist. It is a copy saved in a wordstar file and no one will be able to open the file. All your fans of the distant future will have are legends about what happens in the book. It will be like one of the many lost Greek or Roman plays. We just know small pieces of it.

They will need to dig up a new Rosetta Stone to read the wordstar file.

And this is why I favor vim, but I doubt that Mr. Martin has the time or the inclination to screw around with Unix.
