Good News for Old Blighty

My friends at Harper Collins Voyager have confirmed that the British edition of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will also be released on July 12 of this year, simultaneously with the American edition.

(Please ignore what it says on Amazon.UK. I am sure they will get it right eventually)

Here's the British cover:

Publication dates in other countries will, of course, be dependent on the speed of the translations. Which cannot begin until I turn in the final manuscript. So I had best get back to that right now.

Cheers.

I probably shouldn't say this
but have you ever written the Italian publisher and told them that you felt that the books deserved a better translation? It's more likely that your message would have more impact on the publisher's choice of translator than ours would. That goes for any non-English edition/publisher, let them know if you like or don't like the translation, ask them their plans for publication. Your voice is important to the publisher, since you are the consumer of their editions.

The Stag of the Baratheon's sigil is translated as 'unicorn' in Italian? That's not good, but I'm told that the French translation doesn't use 'dire-wolf' they use the French word for 'were-wolf' instead, and the Starks' dire wolves are most definitely not were-wolves.

Re: I probably shouldn't say this
In the Slovenian translation they made up a new word for direwolfs, krvovolk, which would translate into something like blood wolfs, but since there is no word for a direwolf it's actually ok...and the translation is pretty decent (though I think only the first 3 books so far)...when they were translating Lord of the Rings, the fans went mad for all the stupid things they've put in there...like Merry, who became Medo, which means teddybear...

p.s.
congratulations on the wedding :)

Re: I probably shouldn't say this
The sigil of the Baratheons is a Stag also in Italian. The unicorn is used in the chapter when the Starks finds their pups (I hope this is not too much spoilerish). Obviously the translator missed the symbolism of the Stag and the She-Wolf. What enrages me is that it wasn't an error... Altieri justified later the choice because a stag antler "wasn't fantasy enough". Damn. I love Altieri as a writer (I have all his books), but I can't stand a translator that changes the things in another author's book because he thinks himself a better writer or something like that.
BTW, the Italian translation of ASOIAF *IS* full of errors, too (names, eye colours, english set expressions translated literally and much more), although I love the general style they used for it. I only would have loved more attention in the details and no personal initiatives. In ASOIAF, if you miss a little detail, you can encounter trouble later, because NOTHING has been done randomly by the author.

The Italian publisher knows this, there have been a heated debate here in Italy, but I think they don't care.
BTW, there is not real necessity by the Italian publisher to split the books in two or even three (ASoS). When they want, they publish even larger books without splitting them (e.g. The Stand by S.King; Tolkien's LotR; Stieg Larsson books). It's only for money and I hope this will change soon or later.

Re: I probably shouldn't say this
Oh, we did it (i actually sent a list) and they are printing a new edition right now, so hopefully they'll fix the most evident mistakes.

Maybe i didn't explain myself about the stag thing. Stag IS translated as "stag", but in the very beginning of AGOT, there is a dead direwoolf with an unicorn's horn in the throat... maybe they though it was "more fantasy" that way, i don't know. You still enjoy the reading, but you miss a good foreshadowing.

The italian translator is not that bad, after all, he just changes the books a while, adding whole sentences, changing details, - it's not a big deal, just details like that stag, or the tullys hair color etc. It's okay if you are not a fan... but fans just don't like it. I mean, we need those details for our unlikely theories :)

PS:I love that picture!!
