For Jack Vance Fans

For any Jack Vance fans out there -- and if you're not a Jack Vance fan, why the hell not? -- be sure to check out my news page for the official announcement of SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, the new Jack Vance tribute anthology that Gardner Dozois and I will be editing.

It's a fun project, and we've got a great lineup of writers.

Sounds absolutely fantastic. I'm especially interested to see what you, Moorcock, and Gaiman will do with Vance's settings. Any chance of a Gene Wolfe story in the collection? He shows such a strong Vance influence.

Excellent choice in Charles Vess; I'd love to see him do a cycle of illustrations of classic Vance stories.

In re writers: no Wolfe? I'm surprised. Then again, it might not be too late. Can you imagine Severian having a brief encounter with Cugel? Then again, Wolfe would probably come up with something much smarter.

Chun the Unavoidable has struck, it seems. A few more threads for the Lith's tapestry!

Great news on settling on the U.S. publisher, and landing Charles Vess for the illustrated Subterranean Press edition. He and Mike Kaluta are my top two picks for illustrating anything by Vance. I wonder if Bill could be talked into doing a Demon Princes limited edition...

Well, that was weird. It looked to me like all the comments had been eaten up by some blitz on LJ's DB, but here they all are again.

I think it was a screen/unscreen comments glitch. Seems to be fixed now.

This will be a tasty collection indeed. Whenever I need inspiration for how good writing can get, I read some Vance. Along with Cordwainer Smith (Dr. Paul Linebarger), they are two phenomenal stylists and have perfected the art of choosing the perfect word.

Looking forward to the collection, Mr. Martin!

I tried to read a Jack Vance book once. Lyonesse, I think. I just couldn't seem to get through it. Probably had something to do with the fact that I was about 14 at the time, and just wasn't ready for his kind of writing. Maybe I'll give him another try one of these days.
