In the Apple

A busy week. So much to report, so little time.

I am spending a lt of my time over at Bantam, working with my editor Anne Groell on copyediting and proofing A DANCE WITH DRAGONS to get all the ducks in a row for the July 12 pubdate. A lot of work in a short time frame, but it's going well. Sill have the appendix to nail down, which becomes first priority when I return home May 5.

Watching some of the NFL draft in spare moments, but I've been in such a crunch this year I did not do any of my usual prep, so I have no idea who most of these players are. The Jets and Giants have picked some people. Hope they're good. The Giants got a prince, I see. Not the one who just got married.

Visited the HBO Store yesterday. Incredibly cool, and the people running it were terrific. I signed all the copies of my book on hand, so if there are any New Yorkers reading this who would like an autographed copy, head over to HBO post haste.

All four volumes of the series are now on the NEW YORK TIMES bestseller list. I've got a lot to celebrate and I've been doing a lot of celebrating.

Oh, and of course, there was the TIME 100 Gala, where Phipps and I dressed up like grown-ups and hung out with some amazing people. More on that when we get home.

"I've got a lot to celebrate and I've been doing a lot of celebrating."

Tyrion style celebrating? :D

Anyway mr. Martin, congratulations! You know what I'd really want is for a fantasy author and novel to win a Nobel prize for literature. Not SciFi - fantasy! The genre is vital for humans, who have lived for thousands of years with myth and folklore defining their imaginations and who are now surrounded by... well let's not get into that. Suffice to say that I personally would be a lesser person without fantasy!

With Tolkein, Zelazny and Jordan gone you Sir, are the only one who can pull this off. When you do win the prize I will personally cast a replica of Ice and shove it ...down Gina Bellfante's ...throat!

Just finished watching the 3rd episode too. Very impressed. I think anyone who is watching the show who hasn't read the books; if they get this far they will be hooked. Not bad! Some series take half a season to get to the hopelessly addicted point.

Big News for Big Apple
Must have been something else to be in NYC when the news about Bin Laden broke. Obviously, never good to celebrate the death of a human being, but can't help but be glad that he'll never kill again

Since you don't return home until the 5th, does that mean you were still in New York when the news broke last night? I can't even imagine what it must have been like there.

You should really discuss this on the HBO boards, on Westeros, or Winter Is Coming. I would prefer that analysis and debate about the TV show take place there, or it will overwhelm this blog.

Thanks for your kind words about my female characters.

I managed to get the LAST of the signed books at the HBO Store, and it just so happened to be my favorite volume of the series (so far), A Storm of Swords! Even better, I was meaning to pick up another copy of that one anyway, because my last copy was damaged!

The t.v. series is amazing! The Hound looks much more stunning in real life than he did in my imagination, though...lol.

NYC on Sunday night
Hey George, were you anywhere in particular in NYC as the Bin Laden news was revealed? My friend who lives in the city said that emotions were all over the place and it was one of those moments she'll never forget. A mind like yours, I would love to know if you were able to take in anything

reserved my copy
George, I was at the mall with my daughter picking up some last minute items for Easter and walked into the book store to reserve a copy of Dance.

I walked up to a lovely young lady and said "I like to reserve a book", hesitated because I sorta forgot the title, and then said, "written by George R.R. Martin."

She instantly knew the book I wanted to reserve and the joy on her face was amazing to see. I think she was just as excited as I was for the book to come out and surprised such an "old man" would also be interested too.

Glad to hear this is almost put to bed.

George...
Since you didn't allow my mention of your Time 100 inclusion onto your board about 2 weeks ago when I pointed it out on here, :( hopefully you are willing to discuss it now... after everything you've accomplished in your life, did you ever imagine that a MAJOR new-media publication would consider you one of the top 100 most influential people in the world?! That's a pretty hefty comendation... guess you're like some of those super-star athletes now, you're a role-model whether you like it or not! ;)

Book of Mormon
Hi George. I saw The Book of Mormon tonight, and damned if that wasn't you I saw there during intermission. Didn't say anything, but definitely was happy to brush shoulders with you. Not only that, I saw Peter Dinklage walking out from the balcony as the show was over, and I tapped him on the shoulder to tell him I had seen you there. He had no idea. Very funny moment - we shared a laugh.

I hope you enjoyed the show as much as I did. Probably the best and most pointedly funny musical I've seen in years, if not decades.

All the best,
Dan

HBO Shop
It's a real pity they do not allow international shipping..They'll definitively ahve to setup a shop for European countries other than UK and Ireland....
