In Warsaw

I'm in Warsaw. Spent the morning doing interviews and a big press conference. Now I'm about to leave for a signing at the Traffic Club, whioh is actually a bookstore.

Getting here was somewhat of an ordeal. Our flight from Abluquerque to Chicago was an hour late, which resulted in us missing our connection, and the direct flight that would have gotten us into Poland yesetdray morning. Instead we had to cool our heels half a day in O'Hare and then go by way of London, with a change of planes in Heathrow. We got into Warsaw yesetrday evening instead, and had to go straight to a big HBO interview at a movie complex. There were several hundred fans there, an amazing turnout. Alas, I was too exhausted to sign books and had to go get some sleep... but I am about to make up for that at the Traffic Club.

Anyway, I'm fine (if tired) and glad to be here. (But my assistant Ty is sick as a dog. We're hoping he'll be better by tomorrow, when we leave Warsaw for the con in Ndiza).

Question about signing
I'll be attending one of the signings in Slovenia next week and I have a question for those who attended one of Mr.Martin's signings before or the master himself, if you're reading this.

I know some authors sign a limited number of books from one person, some sign everything you bring them. But unless Mr.Martin has the ability to warg into a Kraken, the latter can be rather difficult to manage, giving the number of fans and books written. I alone have 9 books. So my question is, what is his/your signing policy? I was hoping to get signed at least both the Slovenian and English hardcovers of A Game of Thrones.

Anyway, looking forward to it.

Re: Question about signing
the policy varies from event to event. I suggest you call or contact the store or event runners of whichever event you're planning on attending and ask them what the policy is going to be. If you do get that information, please post it on forums and fan blogs, doing so will make it easier for other people to know what the plans are for whatever event you're going to attend.

Generally, yes, there is a limit to how many books one person can get signed in one go-round of the line at an autographing session. Often you're allowed to go to the back of the line, and if the time for the book signing doesn't run out, you can get more books signed. George is very tightly scheduled in his few days in Slovenia, so the schedule is going to have be run on time, it's unlikely that he'll be able to add on more sessions or stay longer than the scheduled time for at least some of these events.

As I say often, and have posted a topic in the BwB board over at Westeros about book signings and other events, please respect the people/store/organization that is hosting the signing and buy at least one book while you are at the event. Without strong sales to justify the cost of planning and running such an event, there's little incentive for companies or stores to consider hosting such events in the future. Think of buying a copy of a book in the store that is hosting George as a 'thank you' to the people who arranged and ran the event.

Hope you enjoy meeting George and are able to get those books signed!

Re: Angry REVIEW of Ep. 9 Baelor
Yeah there was something he said towards the end of one of his videos that assures us that we will get more of that vitriol nest week.

My favorite part was actually a comment someone posted on one of his You Tube videos about why black men could relate to Ned.

"Ned's like the Bill Clinton of fantasy heroes. He's not a brother, but they feel him:

His best friend is a crazy drunk who drags him into all kinds of shit.

His crazy-ass woman is never gonna forget where he once put his dick.

He had to put his dog down because it bit the wrong rich white boy.

He got put on death row because the wealthy guys bought the law."

Classic.

Warsaw
It was great to see you in Warsaw. I loved that you chatted for a minute with everyone who came with his book, drawing or boardgame to sign, even though some of were so nervous that they forgot all the english they knew. Also, I respect your endurance - i don't know how long it took, but the line was so long that is left the building and went down the street for few hunder meters;D

saw last episode of tv-series. cried again. hate Daenerys and endlessly love Eddard.

there's is written in rules of Game of Thrones: a Storm of Sword expansion (one with the board): "Example: Lannister is the only player with a hostage (Eddard Stark) and [...] The Lannister player decides to execute Eddard [...]"

Hate this. They have no heart!

Question
I will come to Slovenia next week and I just want to ask if there will be a chance to maybe have a chat or at least a chance to take a picture with Mr. Martin.
This is my first travel to a book signing and I don't know how that really works.

Thanks!

Re: Question
George's internet time is very very limited right now, and by the time he would have a chance to see your question, he'd probably be leaving Slovenia.

Please check the limited information we had to put up on George's appearances page at :

http://www.georgerrmartin.com/appearances.html

As I have said several times in comments on this post, the best way for fans in Poland and Slovenia to find out more about the tour is to:

1) Check the publisher's web site. If there's no specific information about George's appearances, then use the contact information you can find to call or e-mail the publisher on Monday.

2) Look on the SF/F native-language message boards, they might have some information given to them by a local store or the publisher that we don't have access to, since we don't speak or read any language but english.

3) The 'rules' at every signing are different. You may not know what they will be until you arrive at the event site. A lot depends on George's overall schedule and how many people are at that specific event. I don't know if there will a limit on how many books you will able to get signed, but there often is a limit on how many books any one person can get signed at one time. I don't know if there will be time for pictures or chats. If a bookstore was thinking they might get 250-300 people to attend a signing that is scheduled to last for 2 hours, but 500 people are waiting when George arrives, it's very likely that the 'rules' will be tightened to give every one a chance to get at least a few books signed. Getting pictures taken at such an event is always problematical; it takes time to pose, the person with the camera usually doesn't know how to operate your camera, someone blinks or turns their head and they want another picture taken.

4) Wherever you intend to go to see George, plan to get there early for a good place in line. Since this is the first time George has ever been to Poland or Slovenia, the crowds have been pretty large. Go early and expect that you will have to wait in a line that will be long.

5) Look at the list on the appearances page, if you can figure out just where George is appearing from that sketchy information, pursue your questions with the event organizer, the bookstore where you think/know he will be appearing, or, as I've suggested before, check the publisher's web site. If you need more information, call the publisher's office on Monday. At this point, George and Ty are mostly likely just able to keep up with the activities that are planned for them, and have only a slight idea of what lies before them on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

6) No matter where you go to meet GRRM, I hope you have fun, and make some new friends while at the event.

If there's someone who reads this post who is in Slovenia and has more information, please send a PM to Goran. Only George and Ty can screen messages on George LJ,, and by the time they have the luxury to do so, the event Goran is hoping to atttend may have already happened. Send me a copy as well, and I'll add it to the comments in this post, since I do have posting but not screening privileges.
