Amazon Screws the Pooch

People are posting all sorts of off-topic comments on my Miss USA post, below, so I am going to close that one and address the news about Amazon.de here.

Yes, I know, Amazon Germany screwed up big time and started shipping A DANCE WITH DRAGONS before they were supposed to. I am told that about 180 copies got out before they were made aware of their mistake and shut down shipping.

I am not happy about this. My publishers are furious.

If we find out who is responsible, we will mount his head on a spike.

Some other retailers are making noises about releasing their own stocks early, using the Amazon error as a justification. They are not supposed to do this. If you hear of anyone actually selling or shipping copies in advance of the publication date, please inform me ASAP.

I know that the 180 readers who got advance copies are happy about this, but I assure you, my publishers are not. And thousands of other readers are now getting spoiled, most quite inadvertently and unwillingly, as they stumble over the spoilers cropping up everywhere on the internet. (Some of the spoilers being posted are false, by the way). Most of those "lucky" 180 are keeping mum, to be sure, but there are always a few jerkwads in any group, and those are the ones who cannot keep their mouths shut.

A mess all around.

All I can say is, pfui.

...
So, a few people have the book before the official release date. What's the fuss all about. The only one, who might have a reason to be upset are Martin's publishers. But even for them I cannot see any major problem. It's not like they are going to sell less copies or something. It is written, it is printed, it exists. And that's that. There will always be many people who read faster than you do and could put up spoilers. Relax and wait!

Rattengezuecht ! Holland in danger of being last...
I'm furious ! Just knowing that there are already copies around of a book I've waited for for donkeys years....and I don't have one. I immediately called my booksellers here in Venlo ( Netherlands ), I begged, I cajoled, I tried to bribe the bugger and ended up reminding him of the amount I spent in his store each month and the fact that I'm a superduperprime customer : no bloody chance. He will only get his copies around the 18. July since he is a smallish bookstore.
As I've also pre-ordered on amazon to be on the safe site, I'm being supplied by amazon germany - who take ages to deliver to holland - I've just been informed by amazon that there will be delay !!! in getting the copy to me. Amazon.de send me a mail... they write that the publishing date has changed and that they will deliver the book between the 16th and 18th of July.
How's that for confusing misinformation ?
AAAARGH !
