Amazon Screws the Pooch

People are posting all sorts of off-topic comments on my Miss USA post, below, so I am going to close that one and address the news about Amazon.de here.

Yes, I know, Amazon Germany screwed up big time and started shipping A DANCE WITH DRAGONS before they were supposed to. I am told that about 180 copies got out before they were made aware of their mistake and shut down shipping.

I am not happy about this. My publishers are furious.

If we find out who is responsible, we will mount his head on a spike.

Some other retailers are making noises about releasing their own stocks early, using the Amazon error as a justification. They are not supposed to do this. If you hear of anyone actually selling or shipping copies in advance of the publication date, please inform me ASAP.

I know that the 180 readers who got advance copies are happy about this, but I assure you, my publishers are not. And thousands of other readers are now getting spoiled, most quite inadvertently and unwillingly, as they stumble over the spoilers cropping up everywhere on the internet. (Some of the spoilers being posted are false, by the way). Most of those "lucky" 180 are keeping mum, to be sure, but there are always a few jerkwads in any group, and those are the ones who cannot keep their mouths shut.

A mess all around.

All I can say is, pfui.

I'm really upset
I've already been spoiled on the supposed ending on a website that was supposed to be about video games. So I've lost all desire to even read the book now. I will still probably get the book on opening day since I've been waiting 11 years for this moment but now I'm not really looking forward to it.

I hope you guys punish Amazon.de and the German booksellers who are selling the book early so that when Winds of Winter come out, they don't get any copies for at least a month. You can't trust them anymore. There has to be some consequences for this.

Re: I'm really upset
Really? You don't even want to read it because you maybe know what might be the ending?

Those middle thousand pages don't interest you at all? Those other character arcs that are covered in the book but wouldn't be in the final chapter's POV are of no concern to you?

Maybe Martin should just be publishing these one chapter at a time so we just get endings...

For real, the overall obsession with not being spoiled nowadays is out of control (not just amongst fans of these books). Yes, it's nice to read or watch something fresh, but way too many people are acting like having any advanced knowledge of anything will completely destroy their life. Let's work on some moderation and quit with the extreme drama.

It's not just Germany
Bad news, I've got my advance copy and I'm based in Northern Ireland.
I thought amazon was just sending it early as it was due to be released on a public holiday here so would have been arriving late but after reading this I presume that is not the case.

Amazon Japan
Same as a previous poster wrote, I also received A Dance With Dragons today from Amazon Japan. I'm happy :) And no worries, I won't write any spoilers.

What a mess! Time to start avoiding Facebook threads about the show.. they've already been full of idiots relentlessly spouting spoilers for the previous 4 books, so I don't doubt it's only a matter of time before Dance tidbits start cropping up. >_<

Shame, this is going to cut down on my persistent stalking of show-related boards hoping for casting news.

I hope Froggy will be back soon!

Re: Ugh.
Me too! Every day I eagerly check for Froggy!

i am one of the lucky germans,he has not pre-ordered(or)ordered Adwd.
because if you get your copy earlier as dated, you must wait longer for the next installment.

hmm, maybe i should pre-order TWOW at amazon.de,and what if i pre-order and get Dreams of Spring before TWOW.

George please dont spoil my DREAMs!!!

On the way to my favourite bookstore IMMEDIATELY!
Even though, I can understand your outrage!

When AFFC came out, my local B&N screwed up and called me to pick it up my reserved copy a week before it was supposed to be released, so I had it read by that Thursday and was crowing about it all over the Westeros boards, but I never gave out any spoilers. I mean, what was I going to do NOT pick up the book and read it?

People were sure envious of me, though.
Jun. 29th, 2011 03:56 pm (UTC)
Absolutely outrageous!!! I'll have to be on my guard now, so as not to come across any spoilers. Which might be difficult. What a mess!
Jun. 29th, 2011 03:59 pm (UTC)
That's awful! Guess I'll be staying off the forums until I get my copy.

Okay, somebody goofed up, but at this point the honorable thing for your publishers (and by extension you) to do, if you wish to avoid the name-calling and pointless recriminations, is release the books early. (Oh, and maybe just crank this stuff out a tad faster, okay? There are still some characters you haven't killed off, and it gets really old waiting for them to die.)

Re: Seriously?
Er. There's nothing dishonorable about the publishers sticking to the review date. As Neil Gaiman might have said, Bantam is not our bitch. *grin*

The people who screwed up are all three (so far) of the Amazon branches who released early, coupled with the few GRRM fans who decided to spoil the books for everybody else. Those fans are dishonorable; Bantam is not, no matter what they decide to do to limit the damage afterward.

Gads, what a mess. Sorry, good sir -- I can't imagine how infuriating it must be to work so long and so hard on something, and then have its triumphant release turned into a source of aggravation.

Also: there's all this talk of heads/spikes/walls and the Beggar King's crown, and *nodoby* suggests cutting off their manhoods and feeding them to the goats? It pleases me to be the first: find the person who screwed up, cut off his manhood, and feed it to the goats.
Jun. 29th, 2011 04:33 pm (UTC)
Won't somebody think of the poor goats?
Jun. 29th, 2011 04:05 pm (UTC)
Indeed, I can't believe it! I know some people who received the book in Germany!
I told them to stay quiet and discreet.
I impatiently await the 12th!
Jun. 29th, 2011 04:25 pm (UTC)
I knew I should've ordered with them ;-)
Jun. 29th, 2011 04:26 pm (UTC)
So after Amazon.de (Germany) some people is saying that also Amazon.jp (Japan) is sending early copies...

If the next one is Amazon.it (Italy) we have to assume that the Axis is a sworn enemy of Mr. Martin. (LOL)

Re: Conspiration
How fortunate then that there is no amazon.it
Jun. 29th, 2011 04:27 pm (UTC)
One of the 180
I'm afraid to admit, I'm one of the 180. And I was very surprised, when I got "A Dance with Dragons" yesterday.

I can understand, that you're furious about the mistake by amazon, it may be very frustrating. So I'll keep my big mouth shut and there are now only 179 other potential spoilers to worry about.

Can't wait for the TV-Adaption to come to Germany!
Keep up the great work!
