Amazon Screws the Pooch

People are posting all sorts of off-topic comments on my Miss USA post, below, so I am going to close that one and address the news about Amazon.de here.

Yes, I know, Amazon Germany screwed up big time and started shipping A DANCE WITH DRAGONS before they were supposed to. I am told that about 180 copies got out before they were made aware of their mistake and shut down shipping.

I am not happy about this. My publishers are furious.

If we find out who is responsible, we will mount his head on a spike.

Some other retailers are making noises about releasing their own stocks early, using the Amazon error as a justification. They are not supposed to do this. If you hear of anyone actually selling or shipping copies in advance of the publication date, please inform me ASAP.

I know that the 180 readers who got advance copies are happy about this, but I assure you, my publishers are not. And thousands of other readers are now getting spoiled, most quite inadvertently and unwillingly, as they stumble over the spoilers cropping up everywhere on the internet. (Some of the spoilers being posted are false, by the way). Most of those "lucky" 180 are keeping mum, to be sure, but there are always a few jerkwads in any group, and those are the ones who cannot keep their mouths shut.

A mess all around.

All I can say is, pfui.

I admit that I'm not a writer/publisher/involved in any way in the publishing industry (other than heavy consumer), but Amazon screwed up, has corrected their screw up (to the best of their ability), and won't sell the book until the release date.

As for spoilers, most fans are good about saying something like:

Something that spoils the book/TV Show/Movie/Whatever

Why are you/your publishers "furious"?
Jun. 30th, 2011 12:41 pm (UTC)
Reading this one just made me wonder... can you ask your publishers if we're going to get any of your books in russian stores in July? Maybe you can even sell digital copies of your book, I'd even prefer that (the smell of a freshly printed book is amazing, but I really prefer reading from my pocket pc...)
Because, I'm sure you can understand, it's gonna be extremely annoying to have to wait for a delivery from England or Germany or even US...

I think the people who were going to steal the book would have done so regardless. Most folks like to read actual books or legit e-reader copies, if nothing but for the sake of their eyes. It's not like pirating music where the quality is the same regardless. Whether they steal it earlier or later makes no difference.

Also, a word of advice: tone down the threatening rhetoric. It's unprofessional and sounds silly. In all likelihood, there were honest mistakes made by people who didn't know it would be such a big deal. Spoilers are going to spoil, it's what they do and there is nothing you can do to stop them. Calling them names and shaking your fist in the air is only gonna piss them off and encourage them to keep at it.

I wondered

i thought that my book should come in July, so i wondered about the shipment notice on Tuesday. At first i thought my memory to trick me and even tried to get a Kindle copy (and wondered again why the Kindle copy would not be available till July 12th). It never occurred to me that Amazon Germany was early. Things like that don't happen.

I gave my copy now to friend who will be on vacation and completely incommunicado for the next three weeks. So no spoiler danger from this copy. Only 179 to track down.

Sincerely yours, Martin

There's this guy I know at work who I usually only mention when asked for people I have worked with that I personally dislike who was trying to say this was intentional. I said it had to be accidental, but would he listen? Of course not. I'll try to pry where he got his copy out of him when next I see him so I can report it.

As a note, I refused to borrow his copy. I'll wait for the actual release date like a decent person.
Jun. 30th, 2011 08:45 pm (UTC)
Why is it so difficult to believe that this is intentional?

"Hey, (friend who works at Amazon), could you get that book shipped out early?"

Amazon employees everywhere were probably asked this question. Amazon Germany just happened to have the fool willing to risk his job and actually do it.

Spoilers shmoilers
Well, a curse for some, and a blessing for others...

I'm quite indifferent. I've got books 1-4 at home but I'm only starting to read the series now. I do not intend to avoid all of the internet until I'm through the first four books.

What's more - these books have been around for over a decade and I have no idea what's going on in any of them, "Game of Thrones" TV series aside (which I did watch). The only time I was exposed to a spoiler was when I foolishly went to read the imdb boards just before the grand finale, which really was my own fault.

In regards to spoilers, I guess I don't see the problem.

That being said, I totally get how this sucks for GRRM, his publisher and book stores. This has happened before, I almost think amazin is doing it intentionally.

Spike them Heads, Indeed!
That's so messed up. Even if I was one of the "lucky" 180, I would want to read it on the release day, same as everybody else. Hopefully you can get those German retailers to take the books off the shelves!

Jun. 30th, 2011 04:33 pm (UTC)
Spoilers will likely be published on Wikileaks :)

Anyway... Fans are interensted in reading the book and not spoilers.
Jun. 30th, 2011 06:01 pm (UTC)
Ah, that explains why I got it two weeks early. I was wondering about that for a bit, but gift horses…
Jun. 30th, 2011 06:16 pm (UTC)
My comment (and the controversial one) was apparently deleted, but I got spoiled on THIS site. Yes, among the comments on this post. Somebody named Theon34 wrote three words of a spoiler just in between their looong comment.
I trust the moderator(s) will read everything from now on, but this is just a heads up, people, that nothing is safe. :( I really hope it was fake.

What are you talking about i did not write any spoilers!

I also wish softcovers would be released too!!! I cant buy the book because it wont match my four. ;)

I'm smiling at this because I felt the same way!

Now, I have a Kindle and will be downloading ADWD on July 12. That should do until I can get my "matching" book. :D

Got The Book
i deeply promise Not to Tell anyone! I was surprised by The shippIng Confirmation! :)

If Amazon were a smaller store, they would probably be forced to endure late releases or reduced shipments from that publisher as punishment. Unfortunately, Amazon is an incredibly large store and punishing them in such a way would be self destructive.

One of the many problems created by having mega retailers taking the place of independent retailers.

I dont pirate any material.

That said after such a wait if i found it out there i would have to read it, doubt i could help myself that said i have my book ordered and paid off in full at my local store so there would be no lost sale, but it would be nice if the release was brought forward for faithful fans.
