Amazon Screws the Pooch

People are posting all sorts of off-topic comments on my Miss USA post, below, so I am going to close that one and address the news about Amazon.de here.

Yes, I know, Amazon Germany screwed up big time and started shipping A DANCE WITH DRAGONS before they were supposed to. I am told that about 180 copies got out before they were made aware of their mistake and shut down shipping.

I am not happy about this. My publishers are furious.

If we find out who is responsible, we will mount his head on a spike.

Some other retailers are making noises about releasing their own stocks early, using the Amazon error as a justification. They are not supposed to do this. If you hear of anyone actually selling or shipping copies in advance of the publication date, please inform me ASAP.

I know that the 180 readers who got advance copies are happy about this, but I assure you, my publishers are not. And thousands of other readers are now getting spoiled, most quite inadvertently and unwillingly, as they stumble over the spoilers cropping up everywhere on the internet. (Some of the spoilers being posted are false, by the way). Most of those "lucky" 180 are keeping mum, to be sure, but there are always a few jerkwads in any group, and those are the ones who cannot keep their mouths shut.

A mess all around.

All I can say is, pfui.

WARNING
Oh, and as Fate would have it, of coursed, some asshat decided that it would be funny to go out of his way to send me a private message loaded with spoilers. Fake ones probably, but word to the wise: if you see private messages coming to you from livejournal or any GRRM-related forums, I would read very slowly and practically through your fingers to avoid spoilers.

This is what it all comes down to, isn't it? We wait for a great book and then the morons, the childish and the downright vile people think it's all a big joke. Then there are those that are so quick to forgive based on any number of other excuses, as if this snafu was the equivalent of sending out an order without the french fries.

Give me a break.

Re: WARNING
I got the same message. Definitely taking it all with a grain of salt, but this is seriously a dick move. Luckily, I only read the first one before realizing what it was.

Re: WARNING
FWIW, I believe you can turn off private messaging entirely, or restrict its use to only your friends.

Re: WARNING
I think s/he decided to hit everyone who posted here for a start. Luckily I had already decided to spoil myself just to avoid having some schmuck ruin it for me, so I am pretty sure that the majority of the ones PM'd to me were fake.

Still, it's a douchebag move and utterly predicatble. I just assumed it would happen somewhere around next weekend. It's gonna be a long 2 weeks. :-(
