I'm Number One...

... and also number four, number six, and number eight.

When GAME OF THRONES was first published in 1996, it failed to make any bestseller lists (well, maybe it made the LOCUS list, don't recall), and certainly never got within shouting distance of the Top Ten in the TIMES. While I still recall the highlights (Joe Beth in Lexington, Kentucky and Kepler's in Menlo Park, California) of that first signing tour, I recall the lowlights even better -- the St. Louis signing where the only four people in the cafe/ bookstore actually LEFT when I got up to speak, and the Dallas signing where I drew a dozen people while Clifford the Big Red Dog drew hundreds. And here we are, fifteen years later, with GAME at number one on the list. Where's that dog now, I want a rematch!

Thanks to David and Dan and HBO, they had a lot to do with this.

And thanks to you, my readers, as well. No promotion, no advertising, no marketing campaign can ever hope to match word of mouth. Without the loyalty and enthusiasm of my fans, none of this would ever have happened.

I hope you all have a great Fourth. It's certainly going to be a good one for me.

One of my colleagues was really pushing me into reading it in 2008, I am not new to fantasy having devoured LOTR during school days.. I got the first book and took about 3 weeks to finish it the other 3 were finished in a week!, I have given my books to many but in the end it was the TV series which converted most of my colleagues :), Some of my friends just ordered the 5 book package on seeing the NYT list... I am happy that the series is getting the attention it deserves :), I hope ADWD grabs the number 1 slot !

I've been recommending this series since I got into it just after Storm was released. Thanks for the good times, and giving me a really fierce read to recommend.

Seriously: Your books challenged the tropes and crushed them under heel without trying to undermine the narrative. Keep up the good work.

I was in Belfast yesterday, and I realized how much the TV show was popular: some street musician was actually playing the theme music in the busy centre...!

Congratulations! Can't wait for "Dragons"...
This is great, congratulations, you deserve all of it. I'm a new fan, picked up the books after seeing episode 1 of "Thrones" on HBO.

I've been reading them one after the other since then, but stopped after the last "Crows" Arya POV chapter, because I'm so distressed you may have made her permanently blind! I've read your comments that Book 5 will cover other characters' POVs, in the same time frame, so are we going to find out what really happened with Arya? I do hope so. In any event, I shall finish Book 4 this week, so that I'll be ready for "Dragons" when in releases next week.

Once again, congratulations, "Ice and Fire" is undoubtedly the very best series I've read. Please keep writing! :-)

I am not much for advertising, especially in blogs, but this is pertaining to the series and I do think you George will be blown away by this as I was. Jason Yang plays the violin and did a youtube video of the opening music of GOT. Even if you do not allow this message through, at least watch it, it is jawdropping fantastic!

A fan of the books and the tv series, this is definitely a must hear!

If it wasn't for HBO and a Friend
... A friend of mine had been trying to get me to read the books for a while now. But I had others to finish and I was like, I'm sure its great but I have to finish Dark Tower before reading anything else. When I was done book 7 of Dark Tower and was through the pain (the good and bad kind that comes with a good read) from the ending, I go downstairs and turn on HBO OnDEMAND to find something to watch, probably to give my brain something to heal itself with. I find the title Game of Thrones under HBOs section and I'm like, that's that book Alan's been trying to get me to read. There were 3 episodes up OnDemand. I turn it on. After episode 1 I go out and I buy the books. I have not put them down since.
I'm almost done AFfC, and cannot wait for book 5. Your series has quickly replaced Dark Tower as my favorite fantasy series and have quite easily become my favorite fantasy author. I have never been so engrossed in a world before. You are, without exaggeration and Hyperbole, one of the best, and a great inspiration. Since then I have spread the series to 4 other friends who cannot put it down, and spend much the time talking about it all with my friends who have seemingly all picked it up.
I bow to you sir.

I remember starting Game of Thrones in high school...so 97?

I remember raging with the fandom over the delays (tee hee...sorry).

I still randomly check out the Song of Fire and Ice tv tropes pages to see any changes.

Also...when I sacrificed all my books and moved over to e-books I spent that $40 bucks for all the books. SO PAINFUL.

Fond memories...good times...and you deserve your success. I might even tune into the HBO series now that the season is over.

Congrats!! I have to say I didn't know about the books until they were being made into an hbo series. They are now my favorite books of all time!!! Well deserved!!

Congrats Mr. Martin!
It's all well deserved.

About time!
You deserve it! Congrats George!

Congrats, George! I am so happy for you! No writer has been nicer to his fans and deserves it more. I remember back in the day when I got my ACoK signed in the SF Valley (at Dangerous Visions, I think), and you were sweet enough to listen to me rant for 5 minutes about how I wanted a Cersei POV. I also checked out the Vroman's signing in Pasadena in January, and how times have changed! (Although you are probably glad you no longer have the time to listen to the fans rant at signings.) Thanks for the amazing books, and I can't wait to read ADwD. Best to you and Parris -- Lady Teli

First, for having 4 novels in the top 10 NYT Bestseller list.

Second, for having 5 novels in the NYT Bestseller list. Okay, maybe this one hasn't happened yet, but its only 7 days away!

See you on the 12th. And then again the next day i think.

A couple of my friends were bragging that they read A Game of Thrones while watching the TV show and I was like...I f-ing finished them all 5 years ago. What about that?

But really I'm glad so many people are finally getting into these books.
