Highs and Lows

Another Sunday, and two more football games. Sometimes it's good to have two teams. The Giants are really on a roll, looking better with each game. I'm especially pleased by the way their defense is playing. Like any old-time Giants fan, I love defense, and the swarming four-headed sack monster the G-men are fielding with Osi, Kiwi, Strahan, and Tuck is splendid to watch. So far I like what I've seen of our rookie CB Aaron Ross too. The offense is looking pretty formidable as well.

As for the Jets... oy... what can I say? Chad is getting all the blame, but truth be told, it's not all his fault. In fact, I'd lay most of the Jet problems on the defense. The run defense can't even stop backups from having 100 yard games, the pass rush is nonexistent, and the cornerbacks commit penalties at the worst possible times. Whether Mangini stays with Chad or switches to Kellen Clemens, I expect we'll be drafting very high next spring. Let's see, any superstar defensive players coming out of college?

And on other fronts, for all of you who hate American football...

The first volume of DREAMSONGS should be in U.S. bookstores by now, in hardcover. Volume two will follow in a month. Yes, this is the same collection originally published by Subterranean in 2003 as GRRM: A RRETROSPECTIVE. Same contents, but if you missed that one, here's the chance to make up for that oversight. The new edition has some nice interior artwork by Mike Kaluta as well.

The American edition of HUNTER'S RUN and the first volume of the new Wild Cards triad, INSIDE STRAIGHT, are both due for release in January. Amazing covers on both, I think. Stephen Martiniere did the HUNTER'S RUN cover, Michael Komarck INSIDE STRAIGHT. Oh, and if you're a fan of fantasy art, check out the news page on my website to a glimpse of the artwork on the new Italian edition of THE ICE DRAGON.

Meanwhile, Gardner Dozois (my friend and co-editor) and I have gotten the first stories in on the two big original anthologies we're editing -- WARRIORS and SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH (the Jack Vance tribute anthology). The books won't be out until 2009, of course, but Gardner and I are excited about them both, and it would seem our writers are as well.

And yes, I am trying to finish up the third Dunk & Egg story as my own contribution to WARRIORS. Right now I'm calling it "The Mystery Knight." That's the fourth or fifth title I've slapped on this one. We'll see if it sticks.

DANCE WITH DRAGONS? Yes, working on that too. Lately it's been Tyrion and more Tyrion. When I finish these three chapters, I will need to double back and pick up some of the other POVs lest my devious dwarf get too far ahead.

An email asked why I disabled comments on my last Not-A-Blog post, about the Dark Sword Miniatures. My intent was not to discourage comments, but to redirect them to more appropriate places. Dark Sword has its own message board. So does Tom Meier, on his Thunderbolt Mountain website. Jim and Tom have much more "hands on" (literally) involvement with the figures than I do, and I know both of them would be pleased to hear your thoughts and field your questions. So take your comments to those forums, please. I provided the appropriate links in my last post.

I don't know where else I would specifically comment on this, but the "On other fronts" part of this journal post I didn't see anything about HBO Song if Ice and Fire mentioned. I haven't heard anything about the progress of that. Is the pilot still be created?? Has the pilot been presented to HBO and has HBO accepted the series??? Is it in full production?? PLease let me know and thank you in advanced!!

It's not like I only come here looking for news of...er ok. I'm lying...
I pretty much come here looking for news of Dance with Dragons. That said, I got some great book recomendations (thanks for the Jaquiline Cary)and a bunch of news about football...hmph...well you can't be perfect, can you? Though I am foaming at the mouth for Dance, I feel it is important for you to do your best not what is expedient. So take your time. You have full support from me. (man, my arrogence at giving you permission to do stuff...whew. I am one arrogent bastard.) Just finish by Christmas, ok? *Smirk* As to the Tyrion, Tyrion and more Tyrion...well I say how do you know too much of a good thing is bad unless you try, right? *wink* Best wishes to your wife, I hope she is doing well and thanks for the recomendations. They are great at filling the time between SoIaF books. This be my first post here, so I hope I havna broken any unwritten rules. You have my greatest respect and admiration already. I awaite your next work of fantasy literature with breathless anticipation. Yours with affection.

its not that football is hated...
it is that anything that is not *your* fiction is hated...

yes...that includes the fanta i am drinking and the chair i am sitting in...DOWN WITH THEM...

this computer and your blog give only escape hatred by a margin due to the fact that they allow the reading of updates as to the status of said fiction

Please don't forget the brothers. John with that idiot and the red witch...{deleted spoiler}... the baby, while the OTHERS loom. and the one eye crow...
Anyways the giants are doing what I expect from them. Because these teams suck. I want to see them beat dallas and go to a brothers superbowl showdown... If darthvader and his NE patriots trip and loose in playoffs. If only I could hear those dice in my head....

This is one of those threads I have to read with care as I waited a while before starting to read ASoIaF and don't want to stumble upon spoilers unexpectedly.

I'm only halfway through A Clash Of Kings, and taking my time to savor the story. Plus, I'm jumping around to read other series. I guess I got lucky in that I came across your website while you had begun working on Dance. I know up front that it will be a while before the story is complete.

I'm patient.

I'd like to say that the construct of the two books so far has been an eye-opener. As an aspiring writer who has read quite a bit over the years, I don't think I've come across POV done as well as it is in your series. It's really been enlightening.

Tyrion and more Tyrion!!! I can never have enough of him :D

I can't find it in my heart to complain about Tyrion Tyrion and more Tyrion.

Thank you!
Just wanted to say thanks for the DWD update. Even if the news is nothing in-depth, its nice to hear that progress is coming along...especially since it has to do with Tyrion!!

P.S. Please don't kill him off.

aw, hooray. my little lion of lannister.

on an ASOIAF-unrelated note, how is parris doing? i hope her stitches came out fine and that she's healed well from surgery.

Parris is doing better, thank you. She had her first meeting with her physical therapist today, and will be working with her twice a week to get her knee back in working order. A little stiff and sore after the session today, but upbeat.

Thanks for asking.

football and Adwd
Its my first time using this live journal thing, and I created it just to post a comment on your blog.
I just wanted to say that I am a huge fan of your work and I am in agreement with all the other supporting fans out here.
I am also a lifelong (20 years) Jets fan, and I was hoping you could give us a famous guarantee: I was hoping you could guarantee that A Dance with Dragons will be completed before the Jets win their next superbowl. Us Jets fans need another guarantee to get us through this awful season.

Reading this was interesting - I never actually realized how much work you've been publishing recently! I bought the Ice Dragon for my little sister (figured it was a child-friendly way to introduce her to you - and I got it signed by you too, although you won't remember that because I was kind of tongue-tied and awe-stricken and altogether uncharacteristically quiet :P)

I'm definitely going to buy Dreamsongs, and I've already read Hunter's Run. I have no prior knowledge of Wild Cards at all, so it was a bit difficult to follow some things at first, but it was a great read and I loved it!

And I'm also excited about the new Dunk and Egg story. I agree with whoever said that the title makes me think of Barristan. Didn't Egg knight him when he won a tourney when he was only a squire? But since the story is about war, I don't think tournaments will figure in it. Does it happen on the Wall, where Dunk and Egg were headed at the end of The Sworn Sword? Okay, I'll stop fishing.

And lastly...yay for Tyrion! And I'm one of those people who would ask you for that deleted chapter about the Shrouded Lord, if I had your email address. In any case, the excess of Tyrion sounds awesome. I also want to see if you include Brienne in the final chapters of Dance. Any chance of that happening?

Thanks for the marvelous update, and I can't wait to go have a look at Dreamsongs!

Re: Yay!
And by the way, I hope Parris is doing better. My cousin had a similar problem recently with her knee, and it was agony.

Thank-you for the info on Dance With Dragons, we don't need it, but we very much appreciate it.

Stop Whining, most of you anyway
I used to check this post several times per week to see what the status of A Dance With Dragons was (sorry, I don't like to abbreviate). I realize that it is taking time, and I don't really care.

Now that football season has started, I check this post to see what the Guru has to say about the NFL. I think it is great that he likes football because it proves that he has a life and isn't the sterotypical recluse writer who lives to do nothing but write. And he is not just a casual fan, he knows his stuff and is passionate about his teams. Take your time good sir, the book will be done in its own time.

Oh, I almost forgot. GO SEAHAWKS!!!! I hope Alexander will start running like he used to , and its about time the defense pulled its head out of its a$$ and started to make some stops. Tubbs with the club was SAVAGE against the Rams O line. I wish the Giants were making the Qwest to Seattle this year...Maybe we could break our record for false starts (again!)

I bumped into Dreamsongs quite unexpectedly in an Australian Borders store today. I saw a shiny new book and GEORGE R. R. Martin in big letters and jumped because my first thoughts were on Dance with Dragons. After picking it up and having a flick through I was intrigued. Something that large would certainly tide me over until Dance with Dragons especially if, as you hinted, there will be a second volume. Anyway, I didn't buy it because I left my wallet at home today and was stuck without money (which of course presented numerous other problems).
I just wanted to thank you (or perhaps your publishers) for printing in Australia as promptly as in the US -it's greatly appreciated.

Pat's Fantasy Hotlist
I read about the bet you and Patrick have going over the Giants and Cowboys. I must say you fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia." But only slightly less well known is this: "Never go in against a Cowboy fan when death is on the line!" Who knew Vizzini was a prophet as well.
