Worldcon Looms

Tomorrow morning it's off to Reno for worldcon.

Worldcon is my favorite con, and Reno promises to be an especially good one. They have a very experienced committee and, by all reports, a great facility. If the fannish ghods are good (and I sure hope they are), we will not be vexed by any of the hotel problems that troubled the recent worldcons in Melbourne and Montreal.

All that being said... I sure wish Renovation was being held on Labor Day weekend.

Two reasons:
(1) Labor Day weekend is the perfect worldcon weekend, hallowed by decades of tradition (yes, I know the con originally started on July 4th weekend, but that was before I was born, and not relevant), and worldcon (and worldcon alone) belongs on that weekend,
(2) it would give me more time to rest. It seems as though I just got back from San Diego Comicon and my nine-city book tour (maybe because I DID) and now I'm on the road again. It's too damn soon. San Diego has become an increasingly important part of the annual con circuit for any professional writer; worldcon needs more distance from it, to give us poor pros a chance to catch our breath, unpack our suitcases, maybe do a laundry.

But Renovation is when it is, and I'm not about to miss it.

So off I go, weary or no. See you there.

The road goes ever on and on...

I don't suppose you'd ever make it down to New Zealand, but have you ever been to Australia??

*crosses fingers you might one day* :)

Uh... I've been to New Zealand twice and Australia four times.

I expect I will return to both, eventually.

ah...and then again, we are older now.....we can't do the things we did when we were younger...! Good luck, and enjoy Worldcon.....I wish...I had such a luxury.

Hooray for Reno indeed.

It's my understanding that Worldcon does this so as not to try and compete with DragonCon, which is a much bigger con for many of the same Vendors Worldcons want to court.

There are a bunch of reasons for going a bit earlier than Labor Day weekend, and avoiding Dragoncon is only one of them. August is a lot easier for people who have children, and for teachers. Convention centers tend to be under-utilised in the holiday season, so the rates are cheaper. If your convention finishes on a public holiday, it can make it more difficult and/or expensive to get things done in the tear-down.

Wish I could be there.

I was at a small local con and spoke with a pair of good friends of yours!

I dunno why you'd want Worldcon on Labor Day weekend. Putting it in direct competition with DragonCon, seems like a good way to kill it off. Almost impossible for them to get any guests.

Dragoncon belongs in July, its original dates.

By moving to Labor Day, Dragoncon broke decades of fannish tradition. Labor Day belongs to worldcon.

There are still some of us old-timers who will never go to Dragoncon so long as it remains on Labor Day (I was once a guest at Dragoncon, yes, but back when it was on its original dates).

Hope to see you there!
It's my first Worldcon (or ANY con, for that matter), and I am thrilled and excited to go. I'm attending the writers workshop, and was only worried that the time might conflict with your autograph session. However, the universe is smiling on me, so I hope to see you there! My only question is why aren't you hosting a literary beer session? I know, there's only one of you...

I so wanted to go to San Diego Comic Con, but i missed it this year. Hopefully, i will go next year. :)

I finished A Dance with Dragons, and now I do not know what else to read. I loved the books so much.

Do you have any suggestions for good books to read? I apologize if this has been asked a gazillion times.

Take a break, rest up. Than crawl into your man cave and write for pleasure. Us fans cant have you getting burnt out. :) I hope your Journey to Nevada was nice.

At least the road to Reno is short.

And we are very extremely quite enthusiastically appreciative of the Winds of Winter sample chapters that it's been rumored that you may be reading. =)

Arya's Black Cat
Is the black cat Arya chases, catches and kisses before releasing in the Red Keep the kitten (now grown up) which belonged to the little princess murdered by the Mountain?

It's never been said, but I've always liked to believe he is poor Rhaenys's kitten
