Westeros and the NFL

Everyone in the Seven Kingdoms is excited about the NFL playoffs.

The wildlings and the men of the Night's Watch and even some northmen are all pulling for the Giants, of course. But in the Vale of Arryn and the Mountains of the Moon, they're Falcons fans.

The Lannisters are cheering on Detroit, even if the lion is the wrong color, but some of the smallfolk of Lannisport on its western bay are fond of those 49ers. The High Septon and all the septa and septons and devout of the realm are for the Saints.

The butchers and tanners of King's Landing and Oldtown are behind the Packers, the smiths and armorers are with the Steelers. At the Citadel of Oldtown, the archmaesters and the Conclave are all about the Ravens, but across the narrow sea the khals and Dothraki horselords are screaming and whistling for the Broncos. In Volantis, the tigers are Bengals backers; the elephants are rooting for whoever plays the Bengals.

Nobody anywhere knows what a 'Texan' is, but a few Dornishmen might support them anyway, just to be perverse.

One commonality unites all the Seven Kingdoms, and the lands beyond. Everyone everywhere hates the Patriots, and Evil Little Bill.

The Starks were all Pats fans and that is why you had it in for them from the start. But Brandon, Ned and Lyanna were fans during the Grogan era and deserved better. Cat always still secretly rooted for the Dolphins. Arya told the kindly old man that Tom Brady was the greatest QB of all time, but it was a lie.

The Citadel of Oldtown knows that Ravens should not be underestimated.

Starks = Patriots
The Starks ethos is totally Patriots. I hope the Pats win it all, but they can be so inconsistent who knows.

I would have thought the Starks to be true Pats fans as well. But I will take the Others. A few of them bolstering our D would be great to see!

The Pats adapt and Win
The Starks lack guile or the ability to plan for the long term. I don't see anybody getting the best of the Pats organization just from the point of planning. No. The Starks are definitely not the Pats.

The Starks are the Bears. Chop of the head (QB) and it all falls to crap. Or maybe even the Colts especially since their QB was out with a neck thingy...

My Eagles Sit at Home During the Tourney
Alas it will be a long cold Winter waiting for another oppotunity with the Eagles.

Starks rooting Interest
I know that they are your creation, and as a hater of the team, you would NEVER come out and say this, but the Starks, and all true Northman would all have to be Cowboys fans. Who exemplifies the Stark qualities of stoic resolve and hard driving fortitude more than legendary coach Tom Landry? The Starks, like my beloved Cowboys, also happen to be one of the most beloved, while at the same time most despised regents in all of Westeros.

Congratulations to your Giants for making the playoffs. I will be rooting for them in this years playoffs.

Sounds good..
Saints are marching, but assuming they take the Lions down, the real test will be the following week in the City By the Bay & the 49ers who've had far more experience in the whole playoff biz. Especially playing away, which up to this point is their Achilles' Hell.

Just ask the Seahawks from last year.

I'm a Pats(Stark) fan, but I tend to root for your Giants in the NFC, and I'd love to see a rematch of the Red Wedding. The Giants have looked bad at times , but they have what it takes to beat anyone.

this strikes me as something a fan would do... the fact that you did it turns the awesomeness level up to 11.

I would have thought that the sport of the North was hockey. Starks must be fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Wrong colour leaf, but I like to think the Old Gods look over them all.

Texans supporter?
I believe that Gendry would be a Texans supporter, as the Texans mascot is a bull. C'mon, someone has got to love us besides a few perverse Dornishmen :)

you're not alone! I am apparently the only other GRRM and Texans fan. I was thinking the Ironborn are tough enough for us, but Gendry works too.

Hey George if you love football so much, how come you never created a sport for Westeros? You don't think that would add to the world building? I would really love to see Tyrion and Penny play some medieval variation of football, and I know you would put your own creative twist on it. These characters don't nearly have enough fun and it would be neat to read chapters where they just played sports. Can't wait to see what you come up with in the next book!

In medieval England, the real one, archery was the only sport permitted for commoners. No nonsense kicking around balls, had to train for war.

The nobles, of course, had hunting, hawking, and, of course, jousting.
