Home Again

Got back from my latest trip to Toronto yesterday afternoon.

(The avatar pic here is from my FIRST visit to Toronto, in 1973, for Torcon 2. My second worldcon, and first trip ever outside the United States. Yes, I was that young once. Yes, there was a time before the beard.)

A fun four days, albeit frantic. The signing at Indigo Books drew a huge crowd, with a line that snaked out the store and way, way, down the block. They told me afterwards that it was the biggest signing the store has ever hosted, breaking the record previously established by Bill Clinton. Hey, cool! That 1996 encounter with Clifford the Big Red Dog still rankles, but I outdrew the Big Dog Bill, so...

It really was great to meet so many of my Canadian readers, and I am sorry that our meetings were of necessity so very short. That would not be my choice, by any means, but when the line is so long you need to keep it moving. As it is, some people got there that morning before the shop opened, and were waiting all day... my hat's off to them, and also to those brave fen who drove all the way in from Montreal just to get my illegible scrawl.

I hope everyone also managed to drop in on the GAME OF THRONES exhibit at TIFF Lightbox, and get your photo taken on the Iron Throne. The exhibition was a hoot and a half, with one piece that... well, let us say, it startled even me.

Besides the signing, and a couple of presentations at TIFF (one open to the general public, one for film and television students from the TIFF 'master class' program), HBO Canada and Random House Canada also set me up for lots and lots of interviews, so I've been popping up all over Canadian television and radio these past few days.

Here's one, for those who missed it: my guest shot on Canada's late night talk show TONIGHT, with George Stroumboulopolous.

I will embed and/or link to some of the other interviews when and if they go up on the net. Meanwhile, it's back to work for me. As usual when I travel, I have lots of catching up to do.

I was in that line, god bless you and the Indigo staffers for keeping it moving so quickly! I don't mind that I stood in line for you!
Are you planning to come to any Canadian cons this year? The World Fantasy Convetion, perhaps?
Mar. 16th, 2012 04:36 pm (UTC)
Or Ottawa Comic Con in May, or Fan Expo in August... :D

You are great!
Thank you very much for that you are real, are good and you are great!

Love that interview! You're as witty as Tyrion without even the need to think on the next thing to say... I'm in awe, for witticism and intteligenge just sprout from you like flowers!!! :D

From a Canadian Fan
I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy reading your series and to tell you how brilliant I think you are! Come back to Canada, we love you!

The TIFF exhibit was cool. Seeing props from season two was cool. I saw your interview on InnerSPACE. Glad you had a good visit.

I don't know all the British actors, but I think Liam Cunningham is a great choice for the Onion Knight.

I've also watched the Blu-Ray now. The in-episode guide is awesome. All of the extra material is great. The show is amazing in HD. All of the commentary is great; my only wish would have been to have commentary on every episode.

Now I just hope more of my friends will finish A Dance With Dragons; I'm afraid of spoiling everybody. Maybe I'll get a chance to see you at Eastercon.

Now you've got me curious to know just what they had displayed...

Anyone know of an online photo group for "my photo on the Iron Throne"?

Yes, really interesting interview - and great shirt! A quick, slightly off-topic question if I may: here in the UK I bought the paperback edition of ADWD, which was published today, and of course it has a bonus chapter from 'The Winds of Winter' at the end. However, this is the same chapter as currently published on the sample page of georgerrmartin.com, not the different chapter mentioned by Mr Martin in blog entry 'A Taste of Winter' from December 28 last chapter. However, that entry does refer to publication in July...have the publishers and/ or Mr Martin simply changed their minds, or is the different bonus chapter still set to appear, perhaps in the US paperback edition, which doesn't appear to have come out yet (not according to amazon.com anyway)?

Re: Paperback
So a little research reveals that the US paperback is still due to appear in a July timeframe (specifically late June), so in the absence of an official statement to the contrary, it seems reasonable to assume that the "different" preview chapter is still set to appear in it. Time will tell I guess.
I am actually just about to start reading ADWD. In the words of Captain Oates, I may some time.

I hope my hometown treated you well. Oh, and the books arrived. Thanks very kindly!

Anyone attending the TIFF exhibition should keep their eyes open for a notice board close to where you line up for the Iron Throne. In the middle of the board is s symbol to scan with your cell phone which will link you to an awesome contest being run by Astral TV.

Two lucky winners will win a holiday to Belfast, Northern Ireland (where they film Game of Thrones don't ya know) which includes membership to TitanCon 2012 and tickets for our Game of Thrones Coach Tour visiting various filming locations. An awesome prize well worth winning - so make sure you go enter and maybe I will see you at TitanCon in September!

Ser Martin -- thanks so much for linking to the interview. As usual it was interesting and entertaning. You really do a great job and seem such an affable person I am so hoping I get to meet you in person in Chicago this year!!!!

As an aside I LOVE the vest you were wearing and if possible could you please post any info on the turtle pin on your beret?? Is it one of a kind or could you share where they can be purchased?

Thanks so much for any info.

The turtle pin and several other of our favorite pieces of jewelry were created by Wings, a Taos Pueblo silversmith. His work can be seen here:

His partner, Aji is a photographer and has some wonderful images of the northern New Mexico we love so well on the web site as well.

George's vest was made by the good folks of Xcentricites, http://www.corset.net/. They make corsets and all sorts of unique and delightful clothing. Their custom designs are always tip-notch. They have hundreds of fabric choices, making the decision on what fabric to use the hardest part of having Xcentricites make us clothing. They often come to SF conventions, so check their website for their planned events.

Wings made my wedding jewelry, including George's first turtle pin, which can be seen on several photos of George attending various GoT events in the last year. The turtle pins NOT exclusive to George, Wings made the turtle hat pin at my request, but the basic design is his and he has made it in many sizes and different presentations.

Xcentricities made all or most of our outfits for our reception at Renovation last summer, not just for George and myself, but for our attendants and my Godskids as well. George's purple 'steampunk' vest was part of his reception outfit, and he wears it often. If you've seen his purple 'alien heads' vest in photos, that was also made by Xcentricities. Like I said, they have a incredible range of fabrics!

Go enjoy their websites and see what other delights they have to offer, all made by people who put quality, craft and the desires of their clients above other considerations. They are good people with excellent skills and talents and we are delighted when we can promote their work to others.

I'm all up to date with the Fire & Ice series (get writing, get writing!), and then my husband bought me FEVRE DREAM for Valentines .. I just loved that story so much, and that really needs to be a film .. if Harry Lloyd were to keep his blond hair, he'd make a fabulous Joshua York .. :)

Glad you had a great time in our country! :) We definitely love you here in Canada.

Speaking of, I know you're a busy man and need to say 'no' more often, but if travel & other factors allow, there are two cons coming up in Canada:

Ottawa Comic Con; May 12 & 13: ottawacomiccon.com/

and Toronto's Fan Expo, Aug 23-26: www.fanexpocanada.com/

It would be great to see you (if free time,a gents, publishers etc. allow), though I understand and respect if you don't go to them.

So very very awesome.
Brilliant interview; I've forwarded the links to all my geeky SFF friends. Loving the rock star entry at 0:04. Has Letterman called to slate you in? ;)
