NFL Draft, Round One

Obviously, I should never go on long trips just before the NFL draft. I was woefully unprepared this year, having barely glanced at the stack of pre-draft magazines I always buy, and I'd hardly seen any mock drafts at all.

And I fear, without the help of my telepathic advice from Santa Fe, that Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum may have made a terrible mistake. I am not at all happy with their choice of Quinton Coples. Yes, we needed a pass rusher, sure... but there were a lot of them on the board when the Jets turn arrived at 16, so I cannot understand why they chose a kid that all the draftniks seem to agree is a physically gifted underachiever who gives minimum effort and does not really love the game. Coples has Vernon Gholston II written all over him.

And I fear that Evil Little Bill, picking later, got a much better prospect at a lower slot. Actually Evil Little Bill and the despised Pats got TWO terrific players, who will vastly improve the Pats D (of course, bad as it was, there was no place to go but up). How does he DO that, year after year? A Satanic pact, methinks...

The Giants, picking last in the round, had fewer great options, and ended up choosing a running back. Well, okay... with Big Brandon gone, we need a new RB to spell Ahmad. This Wilson guy has blazing speed and is very elusive, they say. That's good. Maybe he can return punts and kickoffs. The G-Men have sucked at both for the past couple of years. On the other hand, they also say he fumbles a lot. That's less good. I have to hope Tom Coughlin can fix his fumbling, the same way he once fixed Tiki Barber's.

Cleveland had a good first round, I think. Miami picked their latest QB bust, by all reports. And reached for him as well. From everything I read about this Tannehill kid, they will do better sticking with Matt Moore.

Based on this single round, though, looks as though Belichick tightened the Pats grip on the AFC East for years to come. The Jets, Bills, and Dolphins did nothing to improve their teams, while the Pats got significently better on D. mutter mutter mutter

The Panthers got the player the Giants really needed.

Doesn't Matter
After all, the cowboys (with their fresh new secondary) will hopefully come out roaring, making all other team's picks invalid or unimportant!

Go Boys!

Patriots indeed bolstered their defen5e. Defense wins championships! Except when it doesn't, like this past year. I wouldn't fret about it.

The Draft
Coples was a huge roll of the dice, that's for sure. I think Rex Ryan is fond of "projects," since he himself is one. Stephen Hill was a good pick.

I was so upset that the Pats got Donte Hightower. I really liked him in college and hoped he could make it to a team I like (or basically any team I don't hate). Though I find that thinking about football frequently ends up with me being upset about something regarding the Patriots.

As a Steelers fan in Patriots country, I have two things to be thankful for:
1. We're finally shoring up our porous O-line so hopefully Ben can stay vertical and Rashard & Isaac can have some running room.
2. We don't play the Pats this year (until the playoffs).

Black and Silver
Look, you can all whine and complain about how you didn't get the player you wanted/needed for your team. It could be worse. You could be a Raiders fan like me(since the 70's)we stink and I know it :) I hope there will be a day I can wear my silver and black without people laughing and throwing stuff at me(j/k)Be glad you have a team with a chance of going to the Super Bowl in your lifetime! GO RAIDERS!

The Bills?
How did the Bills do nothing to improve their team? Stephon Gilmore was the best player on the board. He's a ball-hawking CB with blazing speed and a high football IQ, and enough size to help mitigate the physical advantage of big TE's like Gronkowski and Hernandez. I think you'll find Cordy Glenn to be an excellent consolation prize in the Matt Kalil sweepstakes, and LSU DB Ron Brooks an interesting sleeper pick. But even just taking the first round into consideration, the Bills had the best pick in the division, and they used it on the best player anyone in the division drafted.

And before the draft even came around, they added the top non-Manning free agent on the market in Mario Williams, as well as Mark Anderson at DE to bookend a D-line already featuring Pro Bowler Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus at the tackles.

I think the Bills did plenty to put a scare in the Pats.

Well...I recently moved to Massachusetts i.e. New England, home of the Patriot's I believe. I'm not a football fan now though I did follow it when I was a teen. I'm beginning to get insulted when I read that you are despising the "hated patriots" etc. because they are doing well and your teams are not.

Just some advice...the Jets, Giants, Patriots, and all other NFL teams are...well...teams. It's not just one player on the field is it? Also, it's supposed to be fun to root for your team and if they aren't doing so well then root louder. There are only a handful of teams that really win big each year, but they weren't always at the top.

Please give your team leaders the benefit of the doubt...they are professionals much as yourself and at the top of their game. We don't thrash one of your books just because a few sentences lacked grammatical continuity or had some mispelled words...in fact it reminds us that out of the shear number of words you write 99.9999% of them are perfection. Nor do we despise other writers because their art pales compared to yours.

I look forward to your emotional posts concerning the Game Of Football...hopefully you will be more respectful and a better fan of the sport this year.

Go Patriots!
Coach Belichick may be an evil genius, but a genius nonetheless! If the two first round picks turn out as good as i hope, and with the terrific schedule for next season, you might as well welcome the Pats back to the Super Bowl right now! And this time hopefully with a healthy Rob Gronkowski! (which, in all honesty, was what limited NE most in the last Super Bowl vs the Giants).
Also, the acquisation of Brandon Lloyd will greatly improve the Pats' deep threat! Now that Brady can stretch the field effectivly, its gonna be amazing to see what Gronk and Hernandez can do down the middle of the field!

I hope the Giants make it back to the Super Bowl again this year too, even though I hate them. With a passion... But only, so the Pats can DESTROY them this time! Proper Defense und even stronger offense? Who's gonna stop us now?!?

GO PATRIOTS, i love you, Evil Little Bill!

"Evil Little Bill"
Bill Belichick is the Tywin Lannister of the NFL.
