Back from Montana

Back home again from Missoula, Montana, where I spent the weekend as GOH at Miscon 26.

'twas my first trip to Montana, and I can't say I really saw much of it, but Missoula was a pleasant little city, and the con itself was great. They drew 1300 people, I'm told, a record for Miscon, and I think all of them had a great time. I know I did. Miscon fen party like we did in the old days, and the hotel -- Ruby's, a small indy with local ownership -- was really great. None of the nonsense with noise complaints and shutting down parties and elevators that has plagued so many cons of late. In fact, some of the hotel management partied with us.

So a tip of the hat to Justin, Cthulhu Bob, Clay, and the rest of the Miscon Miscreants, and to Tim, Dustan, and Vicky from Ruby's. You were great.

First Miscon
This was also my first year attending Miscon. Other than a few capacity issues, my expectations were greatly surpassed. In part because Cthulu Bob and his crew know how to get things done. Another big part of it was thanks to you. The Winds of Winter Reading and The Blackwater Viewing were my favorite parts of the convention.

Thanks for the awesome personalization. I have had your 'They can keep their heaven. When I die, I'd sooner go to Middle Earth' quote on my Facebook page for years now.

MisCon 26
Right back at you, George! Even though putting on a convention is always a lot of work, it was great to hang out with you when I had the chance. We ended up with 1420 total attendees at MisCon, largely due to you being there. Thanks!

I just have to put my vote in, too! The "Blackwater" episode blew me away, and my family members who haven't read the books and sat around me watching were just enthralled. Peter Dinklage outdid himself once again, however, I think that Lena Headey topped everyone. Anyone agree?

Re: Blackwater
Lena was definitely killing it. I love her. And yes, probably my favorite episode yet. The Hound is awesome. :)

Nice to know that Montana has its fair share of geeks -- in case I end up buying some property in those parts. :)

Oh man, so jealous! My brother-not-in-law-because-there's-no-equal-marriage sent us a picture of his copy of Dance with Dragons that you signed. He also sent us a picture of him sitting on the Iron Throne, but that's bullshit, because there's no way he could rule the Seven Kingdoms.

Back from Montana
I hope you can make it to the great state of Wisconsin sometime George!

We've been arguing about it since Sunday-- and you have the final word on this. Half of us think Matthos screamed "Drums!" and the other half believes he was shouting "To arms!" Closed captioning on our TV can sometimes be incorrect, so we can't trust it.
Who's right on this totally important matter?

Thanks! Great episode!

We had the same problem. Since Davos said something to the affect of "they want music?!" and then says either "Drums" or "To arms" right after, I decided to go with the drums version because of the music reference. But both work, and in a way both might even mean the same thing when you're storming Kings Landing. If you hear the war drums, time to arm up! Great episode!

It was so nice meeting you at Miscon -- we drove down from Canada, about an 8-10 hour drive just because you were there. The reading and the viewing of Blackwater were awesome, thanks so much!

A Dance with Dragons
My family and I have been reading all the Game of Thrones books and they have been enjoyable. I just finished A Dance with Dragons, great work, can't wait for another! But please don't kill of Jon Snow!!!!! Thanks for the great reading, on to the show now!

Dunk and Egg
Hey George! Congratulations on your marvelous work!

I've read all five books but I just can't get enough, so I'm looking for the Dunk and Egg tales. You spoke about a collection that would be published someday and would contain the first four novellas, but the only informations I found about that are a year old! Can you tell us anything about this?

Good to hear that the con went off with few hitches! Elevator issues do tend to be a big problem for conventions out here in the Great Lakes Area. I wish more of the hotel staff would party along with the con-goers out here! We need a page from their book. Glad you had a blast, hope you are well-rested by now!

The Oliver-Stone-Conspiracy-Theorist in me wants to better understand the link(s) between HBO's /Game of Thrones/ and Lefler's 2007 /Last Legion/ adaptation. Unusually-prevalent casting parallels.

GoT Season 3
What episode are you writing for S3? Is the Red Wedding something you would be confident in tackling again, if it were for the small screen? I mean, you already killed those characters, so it should not be that hard killing them again, right?

Partying with the management sounds like a delight. No need to worry about noise complaints at four in the morning.
