More on the App

Since announcing the official Ice & Fire App (see below), we've gotten a lot of questions, most of them concerning when and if the app will be made available for Android, and when and if it will be offering for sale in countries other than the US and UK.

I ran these questions past my people at Random House.

There are, alas, no plans at present to produce the app for Android. That is Random House's call, not mine. (I seldom use a cellphone myself, and don't know one from the other, so all such calls are made by folks more conversant with the issues involved). It is possible that may change in the future if there is sufficient demand, but please email Random House, not me. If an Android app is made available, you can get the update on www.suvudu.com"

As for availability in other countries, Barnes and Noble only sells apps in the US and UK, so the Nook version is only available in the US and UK.

Below is a list of the countries where the app is available for iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch).

. United States
. Canada
. United Kingdom
. Australia
. Austria
. Belgium
. Bulgaria
. Cyprus
. Czech Republic
. Denmark
. Estonia
. Finland
. France
. Germany
. Greece
. Hungary
. Ireland
. Italy
. Japan
. Latvia
. Lithuania
. Luxembourg
. Malta
. Netherlands
. Poland
. Portugal
. Romania
. Slovakia
. Slovenia
. Spain
. Sweden
. Switzerland

The Random House subrights team is currently looking into translation deals for non-English-speaking readers. But there is nothing to announce yet on the translation front. Sorry.

Random House, if you're reading this...
This is kind of insane. Especially after seeing that list of countries.

If you want to go international with your apps, supporting Android is an absolute no-brainer. I know this because I make apps for a living, but lookie here, I also have charts, graphs, figures and facts to back me up! Just look at all those pretty pictures.

iOS exclusivity is acceptable if and only if your market is the US. So come on, Random House, get 2 people, max, with Android development experience, or even just Java know-how (learning Android is not hard for any decent dev), and do this thing!

Oddly, Mr. Martin's (bareheaded) LJ pic manifests strong Julian-Glover resemblance -- most particularly to Glover-as-Pycelle. I never would've guessed or affirmed such a statement, were I not seeing the similarity with my own eyes. Eerie.

Anyone got a nook tablet?
It may not be completely kosher to mention this; but it may be possible to pull the apk off from a nook tablet and install it on a stock 7 inch android tablet. It'd almost certainly work on a device running Gingerbread - maybe even on ICS or later.

is this for real
Dear Geroge

I was just wonder if the this article was true or not. It states that your World of Ice and Fire book will be coming out in November, but from all of the dates we had with ADwD's I learned that your word is the only one I should trust. Thanks in advance, ha ha ha

Re: is this for real
That's the pub date, but like all pubdates it is subject to change. It all depends on when we finish and deliver the worldbook, and how long our army of artists, painters, and cartographers take to finish their part.

I don't really use cell phones either, but boy, was I ever excited when I heard about this app. Sadly, my phone (which I family forced me into using for safety purposes) is an Android. :( I'd love to use the app and see how it works. It's still an awesome, awesome thing.

GQ Article
Was totally jazzed to read the article, "THE YEAR'S BEST TELEVISION EPISODE" in the December issue of GQ. In a GOT season with a lot of fantastic episodes, must be satisfying to know that the one you wrote was singled out as the "best"!! Well, what could we expect - this is your fantastic creation and you are the master!

Was also excited to see the comment (yours??) that WOW is about half way completed? Looking forward to updates here or at your website.

Anyway, congrats on a truly magnificient GOT episode!

Re: GQ Article
Unfortunately, that's a misquote. I am working on WINDS, but it is nowhere near half done.

Nook Color, Nook Tablet, Nook HD and HD+ are all android based (as is Kindle fire). So the biggest ereaders on the market will not have access to the app? Random House needs to rethink this choice.

Re: Confused!
The app is available for Nook.

Could your assistant provide us with an email address for Random House so that we can make sure the right person hears our requests? I am an Android user and I want to buy the app! (In the parlance of the internet: "Shut up and take my money!")

This is why I've stayed with the IOS Ecosystem. The App is great, I downloaded it yesterday and bought the 5 book pack for $4.99.

People complaining about Android support don't blame Random House. It costs money to develop an app and the return on investment for the Android ones just isn't that good. Android users have become accustomed to free apps with ads and are reluctant in most cases to pay.
There's also the issue of the fragmented OS...Android is to Smart Phones much as Linux was to PC's it was fun for developers but all the different front ends prevented a cohesive experience.

While Android users can claim more phones world wide the fact is there is no Single Android phone/flavor that outsells IOS. I've even started seeing Apps advertised as "For iPhone and Samsung Smart Phones".

Not available in Chile. =(

not available in Mexico
Sadly I can't download it in Mexico even though I speak English. Dealing with the apple store is like dealing with Jaime and Cersei's inbred firstborn.

I like the app, but it has several spoilers when crossing characters,

For example I set the spoiler alert to Clash of Kings, read on Joffrey and all the information was limited to the 2nd book. However, I asked information of Littlefinger and he gave me a big spoiler on Joffrey! Something that happens in the third book!

I guess several other similar errors must exist
