Website Revamp

By popular request... a complete redesign and revamp of my website debuted today.

Same content. New look. More bells, more whistles, more functionality (we hope).

There will be a few bumps as we ease through the transition, but we should have everything smoothed out and running well before too long.

Let us know your thoughts.

So cool !
I first thought it was the wrong website... WOOOAOW O_O The new design is really really good, and it's a great idea to show the work of all those fabulus artists! Thank you for this, and for all your creations!

aim for the stars
Dear George R.R. Martin

At first glance it is a much better website than the old one.

I feel like Davos Seaworth standing up to Stannis Baratheon, but even writer-kings need hard truth!

I had to ask myself: is this website really showing what George R.R. Martin represents? If this website were, for example - a short story, what kind of short story would it be?

I came to the sad answer that the website does not reflect the qualities I have come to love about mr. Martins work. And if the website were a short story, it would be a very dull one - young adult fantasy, card board hero/villain hack'n'slash with the occasionally cheesy romance filler.

A very different fantasist, J.K. Rowling, managed to get a website that reflected her litterary qualities. It included small online flash-game puzzles and the like. Which made good sense in regards to her fictional world.

When I reread my Ice and Fire books I can feel the hard work that has come from tons of rewrites, like the fabled valyrian steel it has been heated, hammered, cooled and folded with spells and skills I can hardly imagine.

The web-people should take a leaf out of your book. Great authors should have great websites. Dont settle for nothing less. Put those web-grumkins and snarks back to work I say.

They should be able to do better than a grey slab of marble, that looks like a Dungeons and Dragons webpage.

I miss dirt and mud, blood and gore, rusted iron and squeaky wooden doors, characters in (more than fifty) shades of grey, hearts in inner conflict.

Love your work though George.

PS: Sorry about my rotten english, it is not my first language.

I'll miss it
I understand the update and (I guess) I support it. But that ol' site had become like an old friend. Sad to see it go.

(Basically I'm just naturally resistant to all change no matter what it is)

The new site looks much better George. But one thing - I can't find place on the new site where samples of Ice and Fire are.. any clues?

Can't find Samples
I can't find the writing sample of Arianne that you posted in January from the newest book! Just heard about it now and was really looking forward to reading it!
Overall the site looks REALLY good.... Will miss the old one though.

Look under 'News', then 'Winds of Winter'.

All things must end
I miss the old site already. The site was unattractive and looked like something that you would see 15 years ago, but it was what it was. All of the great houses on display and I associated the site with you. A guy who grudgingly excepts the benefits of technology, or at least that's how it seems to me.

Now you have new current website that is easy to navigate and looks good. I like it, even if I am already nostalgic. Congratulations!

Winds of Winter
What happened to the Arianne excerpt George? I will speak only for myself: I am dying for ANY news on Winds of Winter (though I am sure I'm not the only one).

Great new look.

Happy writing.

New website
A new website deserves a new sample chapter just to start it out right...

Honestly? I hate it. I've been visiting this site for about 9yrs and I feel disappointed. I feel like the majority of this site is now dedicated to the show, and that's not how you started out George. I love a song of ice and fire, I consider it the best book series I've ever read. And the fact that i had to really search on this website to find any news about it (and the fact that i STILL can't seem to locate the ice and fire chapter from the next book that u recently put up) makes me really upset.

Only since you asked..
prefer the former, on basis, 'If it aint broke, don't fix it'. I miss the sigils - they were strikingly memorable & you knew you were in the right place; in someone's labour of love.I trusted the old site's rustic honesty. Like meeting Strider in the Prancing Pony; 'Foul would seem fairer', kind of thing. The new site seems too fair.It is sleek & glossy, yes, - like a sales catalogue &, well, too sterile for my taste, with a souless "sell, sell, sell" message, similar to any ubiquitous bookstore chains' sites. It's pitching too hard, IMO, and you, Ser, don't need to do that. Hell, it's your baby (or is it)? & there's nothing wrong with pitching & selling, per se, but it's kinda 'in your face' and pedestrian. I want dragon smoke, kraken coils in the deep, children of the forest hands' parting branches, blue blazing eyes in the dark, blizzards. And if I want to buy a wooly bunnet that says 'Winter is Coming' I'll go to HBO; not your site. I suspect HBO types' fingerprints are all over the new site design. I think I'll visit the new site less as its lost a lot of its character, but, then again, like one of Pavlov's dogs, I'll no doubt adjust. To sum up, the former site was "Ser Barristan Selmy" & the new one is "Daario Naharis", on whom the jury is still out.

I always smile when I see your announced appearances. Puts you on the same level as the Virgin Mary.
