Wildfire v. The Doctor

GAME OF THRONES will be taking on The Doctor this year in the Hugos... and FRINGE as well.

LoneStarCon 3 just announced this year's Hugo nominations. "Blackwater," the ninth episode of the second season, has been nominated in Best Dramatic Presentation - Short Form. That was the episode with the wildfire and the big battle, I am sure you all recall, written by yours truly (with considerable help from showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who added one of the shows's best original scenes) and directed by Neil Marshall. We'll be up against an episode of FRINGE, and no less than three episodes of DOCTOR WHO, which has owned the Short Form category for most of the past decade.

The full list of nominees can be found at:

The Short Form finalists:
Doctor Who:"The Angels Take Manhattan" Written by Steven Moffat, Directed by Nick Hurran (BBC Wales)
Doctor Who:"Asylum of the Daleks" Written by Steven Moffat; Directed by Nick Hurran (BBC Wales)
Doctor Who:"The Snowmen" Written by Steven Moffat, Directed by Saul Metzstein (BBC Wales)
Fringe:"Letters of Transit" Written by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Akiva Goldsman, J.H.Wyman, Jeff Pinkner. Directed by Joe Chappelle (Fox)
Game of Thrones:"Blackwater" Written by George R.R. Martin, Directed by Neil Marshall. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (HBO)

Thanks to all those who sent in nominations, whether you nominated us, or someone else. As I have said time and time again, the nominations are in many ways the most crucial part of the process.

Should be an interesting contest. I haven't seen any of the last season of DR. WHO, so I don't know which of those episodes is the strongest contender... but the Whofans are many and formidable, so I figure we are rather a long shot to upset the Doctor's applecart. I know even less about FRINGE. But hey, you pays your money and you takes your pick, and the Hugos fall where they may.

Congratulations to all the other nominees, and my thanks to David, Dan, Bryan, Neil, and all the rest of the great cast and crew who make HBO's GAME OF THRONES the hit it is.

I've seen every episode of GoT 1-2 at least 4 times. I recently watched "Blackwater" on blu ray and I have to say that it is the best episode of the entire series, in my opinion. I think you have a shot :)

I hope Blackwater wins!
Congratulations on the nomination and best of luck! I've yet to check out the other nominees, but, I LOVE your writing for the HBO series and especially your Song of Ice and Fire series. You are a master story teller, worthy of all the praise. Thanks for being so good at what you do! All the best, Sheila.

Dr Who
I was just wondering if you've ever been approached to write an episode of Dr Who and if you were, would you be interested?

Re: Dr Who
I have not been approached, no.

If I were, sure, it might be fun.

But right now, no way I have the time. Maybe after I deliver WINDS OF WINTER, or even A DREAM OF SPRING. But that will be years from now, and likely several Doctors down the line.

I would not be a good choice to write about Daleks, by the way. My Brit friends who encounted Daleks as children tell me they are terrifying, but they still seem risible to me. Their main weapon is a toilet bowl plunger, after all...

Re: Dr Who
I will say the same thing that I've said to everyone who can't wrap their minds around Daleks.

When you're five years old, you don't care that a Dalek is awkward, clumsy, and looks like R2-D2's crazy plumber cousin. All you know is that it rolls into the room, and EVERYONE DIES.

Incidentally, which is the scene that Benioff and Weiss added to Blackwater that you regard so highly? Would it be the one of Cersei and Tommen in the throne room?

While I'm a recent Dr. Who fan and love the show in general, this year has been very uneven. 2 of those episodes are downright mediocre. Asylum of the Daleks was good, but Blackwater was phenomenal. If GoT doesn't win, it will be a darn shame.

Blackwater is better than all of those DW eps, but I'd say the strongest is the Angels take Manhattan. Didn't see the Fringe ep... good luck.

I've never watched Fringe, but I ollow the Doctor fairly closely. "The Angels Take Manhattan" is, IMO, one of if not THE best episode of the show since it has come back. I'd definitely make it the favorite out of the Dr's episodes, and probably a slight edge over Blackwater. The emotional swings in "Angels" are just crazy. However, since I've read the books and knew what was coming, "Blackwater" may not have affected me as much as someone who hasn't. That could be coloring my judgement.

Come to think of it, if the episode wins, who of the so-many people who've done outstanding work gets to go up on stage and hyperventilate?
Apr. 4th, 2013 02:47 pm (UTC)
Well, me, because I will definitely be at the convention.

Last year HBO sent Ron Donachie (Ser Rodrik Cassel) to Chicago, and he went up on stage with me. They may send an actor this year as well, but the con is months off, and we won't know for certain until nearer to the event.

David and Dan would love to attend themselves, but it's hard, since worldcon always falls right in the middle of our shooting schedule, and they do have a show to run. When I'm in San Antonio, most like one of them will be in Belfast, the other one in Dubrovnik.

If the show gets another nomination next year, however, we might be able to get them to Loncon. London is much closer to Belfast than Texas is.

Original scene
Congrats on the nomination! Out of curiosity, which scene did David and Dan add to the episode? Was it Bronn's firing of the arrow? That was a very cool scene that made up for the lack of the chain. I hope all is well. Don't overwork yourself! Looking forward to the Winds of Winter, as well as anything else you may be working on!

Re: Original scene
Bronn and the Hound in the brothel is the scene I was referring to. One of the strongest in the episode, IMNSHO.

Blackwater is a truly epic episode one of my favorites! However Angels Take Manhattan, and Asylum of the Daleks are probably 2 of the strongest episodes of Doctor Who EVER produced. They both have such a wicked twist in them its difficult to keep your eyes dry. Blackwater is in for another battle. If you get a chance to view either please do so you will not be sorry. I'm pulling for Blackwater, but i won't be surprised if either Doctor Who episodes pull out the win. Fringe can go eff itself. i've been done with that show back in season 2 >:?/

As a lifelong Doctor Who fan, I'm personally hoping Blackwater wins. It was spectacular!
