The ROGUES Are Coming

Gardner Dozois and I have just delivered the completed manuscript (well, e-manuscript, it being 2013 and all) for our latest big cross-genre anthologies, ROGUES, to our editor at Bantam Spectra.

Once again, we've got a really kickass lineup of contributors, and some terrific stories.

The table of contents:

George R.R. Martin “Everybody Loves a Rogue” (Introduction)
Joe Abercrombie “Tough Times All Over”
Gillian Flynn “What Do You Do?”
Matthew Hughes “The Inn of the Seven Blessings”
Joe R. Lansdale “Bent Twig”
Michael Swanwick “Tawny Petticoats”
David Ball “Provenance”
Carrie Vaughn “The Roaring Twenties”
Scott Lynch “A Year and a Day in Old Theradane”
Bradley Denton “Bad Brass”
Cherie Priest “Heavy Metal”
Daniel Abraham “The Meaning of Love”
Paul Cornell “A Better Way to Die”
Steven Saylor “Ill Seen in Tyre”
Garth Nix “A Cargo of Ivories”
Walter Jon Williams “Diamonds From Tequila”
Phyllis Eisenstein “The Caravan to Nowhere”
Lisa Tuttle “The Curious Affair of the Dead Wives”
Neil Gaiman “How the Marquis Got His Coat Back”
Connie Willis “Now Showing”
Patrick Rothfuss “The Lightning Tree”

This one was an enormous amount of fun. We're got something for everyone in ROGUES -- SF, mystery, historical fiction, epic fantasy, sword and sorcery, comedy, tragedy, crime stories, mainstream. And rogues, cads, scalawags, con men, thieves, and scoundrels of all descriptions. If you love Harry Flashman and Cugel the Clever, as I do, this is the book for you.

If there's any bloody justice, some of these stories will contend for awards.

(And it's one more monkey off my back, hurrah, hurrah)

Congratulations! The third one in five months! You sure are busy...
May. 13th, 2013 07:01 pm (UTC)
So you made this specifically for me, didn't you?
Daniel fucking Abraham, *the* man himself.
Paul Cornell.
Connie Willis.
Gillian Flynn.
Walter Jon Williams.
Lisa fucking Tuttle.

There isn't a single writer on this list I wouldn't kiss given an excuse.

I love you and Gardner Dozois.

Hurrah that another one bites the dust! Hopefully the other monkies are behaving, chief among them being 'son of kong', as you call it.

Are you reading, or have read, The Tyrant's Law yet by some author called Daniel Abraham? I remember your review post of The King's Blood and and would love a review of that book.

That comes out on my birthday
As if I needed another reason to loving Mr. Abraham, book three of "The Dagger and the Coin" gets published on my 24th (I feel old) birthday!

It'll only take three weeks for it to get here, but I can wait.

Neil Gaiman “How the Marquis Got His Coat Back”

Ha, some people (i.e. me) have been waiting to find that out for 17 years since NEVERWHERE aired on TV. Cool :)

Yes! The Marquis was my favorite character in that.

Would it be safe to say this will get a 2014 release?
May. 13th, 2013 08:09 pm (UTC)
Well, yes, I think that's likely, but until Bantam tells me the pub date, we can't be sure. It all depends on their schedule.

You are right...no bloody justice in having to wait until next year to read a new story from you Mr. Grimdark! Not to mention all the other amazing authors in this compilation. Way to go for putting this one together Mr. Martin! What an amazing crew of authors!

Looking forward to it!
Connie Willis - yeah...

Thanks for doing this, GRRM! I took your suggestion a few weeks back and finished "Best Served Cold" and am now working on "A Shadow in Summer" so I'm excited to see all this new work :)
May. 13th, 2013 09:26 pm (UTC)
Ooh, a lot of great names in there!
May. 13th, 2013 09:38 pm (UTC)
I'm really looking forward to this one.
May. 13th, 2013 10:32 pm (UTC)
Are there others like this already published involving you? If so I may have to get my wallet out!
May. 14th, 2013 01:26 am (UTC)
Yes, Gardner and I have done a number of anthologies together.

Already published are WARRIORS, SONGS OF LOVE AND DEATH, DOWN THESE STRANGE STREETS, and SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH. The last is a tribute anthology to Jack Vance.

Delivered and forthcoming are DANGEROUS WOMEN from Tor and OLD MARS from Bantam. And now ROGUES.

We are still at work on OLD VENUS.

The rumors of an OLD URANUS are unfounded.

Keep up the awesome work, George! :)

Can these books be ordered signed? After getting my signed anthologies I don't fancy buying a "naked" copy :)
May. 14th, 2013 01:22 pm (UTC)
Feeling a bit aprehensive about this to be honest. I bought the "Songs of Love and Death" anthologie and by the end of it I honestly felt cheated.
May. 14th, 2013 06:18 pm (UTC)
Sorry to hear that... but, thankfully, you were in a small minority on that one. The reviews for LOVE AND DEATH were very good, and two of the stories therein were nominated for Edgar Awards.

But not all books are for all readers.

Thank you.
I first started reading A Song of Ice and Fire around when Clash of Kings came out. I've loved it ever since.

I recently read Tuf Voyaging, which I really enjoyed. It has me excited to read your other works. I'm looking forward to reading Wild Cards in the near future.

I was curious what other sci-fi and fantasy fiction you would strongly recommend or advocate to your readers? Is it fair to assume that the writers featured in anthologies in which you've been involved come especially recommended? I am particularly interested in works that feature deep, complicated characters.

Thank you for everything.
