Headed for Conquest

I hear that everything's up to date in Kansas City, so I'll be headed that way tomorrow to see for myself.

ConQuest beckons; KC's annual regional convention, one of the best. Should be a good time. Patrick Rothfuss is GOH, John Picacio will be there, along with Brad Denton, Caroline Spector, and all of my old KC friends and partners in crime. I'll be doing a reading, doing a panel, eating too much barbeque, drinking too much bheer.

And even before the con, we'll have the road trip. I will be hitting the road with my Aussie friends, and driving right through the heart of Tornado Alley, which should be an... ah... adventure. If you're in Oklahoma or Kansas and think you see me passing by, you may be right. The Big Well beckons... along with Dorothy's House, Pancake Boulevard, the Cosmodrome, and the Elevator of Terror (you can't make this stuff up).

They've gone about as far as you can go! ;-D

Looking forward to seeing you and Paris at the con!

A place where there isn't any trouble. Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be. It's not a place you can get to by a boat or a plane. It's far, far away. Behind the moon, beyond the rain...

Glad to have you passing through Oklahoma. If your going up Interstate-35 you will see where the tornado hit in Moore. When you get to traffic backed up going 5mph you know your close. It was great meeting you down in Aggiecon this year. Thanks for signing my books and maps! I look forward to Game of Thrones every week on HBO. Best show on TV.

One of our better kept secrets is Guy & Mae's Tavern
119 W William St, Williamsburg, KS 66095
(785) 746-8830

About 60 miles west of KC just off of I-35. Dry rub ribs, some of the very best ever. Call ahead to make sure they're open.

Imagine my surprise when I checked your web site about a half a month or so ago to find that your next convention appearance would be happening about 10 miles from where I live. ConQuest should prove an excellent substitute for the lack of a GoT episode this coming weekend, especially if we get a chapter reading out of it.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Safe travels, and have fun! Hope your projects are going well and that some year you can make Canada - be it for a book release, or a Con...I'm kicking myself for missing you last March when you visited Toronto. Hope our lands see you again, stopovers aside.

Too late for me to come, already have weekend plans, but enjoy the drive. the weather should be perfect.

If you're in Salina round food time, the Cozy Inn in downtown salina is a good place to stop....get a bag o burgers. And if you want to clog ye old arteries, check out the fried cheese curds at A&W in Russell or Junction City. There's also a great bistro in Hays, Gella's. Good brew and good food.

Fortunately, the big well survived greensburg's tornado and if you're north of Garden City, Monument Rocks are cool to visit.

KDOT's starting their summer construction season so take a gander at www.kandrive.org. At least you can know if you're gonna hit any 20 minute pilot car lines.

Drive safe and enjoy the pretty green grass and endless horizons.

I can't make it this year because I just started a new career, but last year I made it and saw Gardner at the Sheraton. I hope it ends up "in the unknown" again lol.

Producers Comments
This is probably a futile effort, but the comments by one of the GOT producers has myself and I'm sure a few of your avid readers concerned. I'll just get to it then...He mentioned that he believes the life of the show is likely to be 7 seasons (I'm sure adding a season isn't off the table) which makes sense as far as carrying an audience goes.

That being said, I'm sure you know where this is headed. The concern being that we (the readers) end up seeing the nuts and bolts finale on HBO before getting a chance to read it. I'm not one of those people who gets angry when you watch football, or talk about something other than ASOIF. Nor am I one who wants to rush your work at all, and I think you understand that your readers would be devistated if the ending is shown on TV before A Dream of Spring is released.

It is very much public knowledge that there were timeline/plot issues with the last 2 installments and thus the writing was arduous process for you. Therefore, among other reasons you are very hesitant to give any predictions as far as a release date for Winds of Winter goes. That is perfectly understandable, but for your loyal readers sanity could you maybe throw us a little info as far as progress is concerned. Maybe like a quarterly or semi-annual update?

I have no doubt that you are doing everything in your power to make sure the last 2 books are out before HBO gives us the conclusion. The real concern for most of us that have been reading your books since the mid to late 90's isn't that it takes too long between books, its that our being on the bandwagon since the beginning will end up being for not. I can't think of a less satisfying way to find out who sits the iron throne than scrolling through my FaceBook feed and seeing it there. Or reading it in Entertainment Weekly that my wife gets.

I have little faith that this will get to you, as I'm sure this will message will be flagged as some sort of disgruntled fanmail. But, if you do read this I just wanted you to know most of us (I've talked to an usual amount of other readers about this topic) are not angry over the length of time between books, although I admit there are those that are, we are just concerned readers that our loyalty/faith will lose out to the TV show watchers that came on board 2 years ago.

Re: Producers Comments
You guys attach too much weight to offhand comments made in these interviews. We all get interviewed a lot. You do your best to answer, but the things the producers and actors and writers say are not meant to be taken as gospel. Frank's comment about seven seasons was never meant to be etched in stone. Maybe there will be seven seasons. Maybe there will be eight. Or ten. Maybe only four. The truth is, no one know. We take it season by season. It's TV. Things happen. As William Goldmann once famously observed, nobody knows anything.

The books are the books, the show is the show.

Would love to see you come to a con in the Queen city, aka Charlotte. So few cons in the south, could use some in the Big Four as they say.

Firstly, I know you're away right now probably having an awesome time hanging out and partying at the con (and I don't get to go to another con until October, so damn if I'm not jealous). And (is it weird that years and years after finishing middle school I still feel like I'm doing something wrong when I start a sentence with "and?") for all I know you'll be addressing this after you get back, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Amazon is offering pre-orders of Dangerous Women and their page for it has a release date of December 3rd, 2013. Is that official, or another case of Amazon jumping the boat?

Loved the event today, (Sunday)! On the elevator after, (denim shirt and boyfriend had on a Royals hat), I really, really wanted to invite you over to a suite for the remainder of theRoyals games, but my boyfreind asked that I not to be a crazy person. Plus, someone was chatting your ear off. Hope you got to have some bbq, (please say you got a z-man from Oklahoma Joes).

Mr. Martin, have you seen an article by Tara Brady (Mail Online - UK)titled "Losing the plot: Fascinating collection of notes, diagrams and tables show how famous authors including J.K. Rowling and Sylvia Plath battled to plan out their novels beforehand" ?

Any chance you change your mind and we get to see yours one fine day? :-)

Dang missed you :( next time for sure.

Loved Sunday's panel! My boyfriend and I were in the elevator with you afterwards (denim shirt, green dress), and I wanted to invite you to hop across the street for the rest of the Royals game, but my boyfriend asked if I would please not be a weirdo.

about S04 casting news.
It's all over the internet that they are currently casting Oberyn Martell. Are they casting Arianne, Obara, Nymeria and Tyenne, too? Or are we gonna see them at S05?

Re: about S04 casting news.
They'll probably be in Season 5 if they're in it at all. Oberyn is in A Storm of Swords, so it makes sense for them to cast him for Season 4.

If a man who takes the black is later pardoned for his crime...
Just curious... suppose a man is convicted of a crime and given the option of taking the black. He then swears an oath to the night's watch. The man is then pardoned for his crime. Can he then leave the watch, or does his oath still stand?

Item you are holding
What are you holding onto there? It reminds me of "Of Mice and Men." You have a look on your face like you have the best prize on earth to cuddle.
