Happy Halloween

Speaking of things that go bump in the night....

If a creature who looks like this shows up at your door trick or treating, don't be fooled.  It's not me.  That's my friend and associate and co-editor Gardner Dozois dressed up in his GRRM costume for Halloween.

You can give him candy if you want, but not cheese doodles or, god forbid, jellybeans.  He puts those up his nose.

Actually, though, Gardner looks so good as me that I am thinking of sending him to Australia next month in my place, to make all my public appearances while I stay home and write.  (Don't everyone agree at once, please).  So if you run into "me" in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, or Adelaide... well, you better take care that it's really me.  (If he rips open his shirt to expose his breast, it's Gardner).

Weeelll..... you will be stuck on a plane for many hours during which time it would only be prudent to write... perhaps.

Ha, great costume. Are you going to return the favor and put a Gardner Dozois costume on for Halloween (with a jellybean in your nose of course)?

If he comes to my house I'll give him a handful of cheese curls and offer to show him my things.

Body Double!
I was wondering where you get enough time in a day to do all the things you do. You have finally slipped and revealed your secret. A body double! Funny stuff!

At first glance I thought you wrote:

"...If he rips open his shirt to expose his beast..."

Yep, it's been a long day at work.

You would not send Gardner as a stand-in unless you were pretty sure you would never again go to the continent.
I once swapped name badges with a friend at a Worldcon, and people started beginning in the middle of strange conversations -- and then I remembered that he was a zine fan . . .

Brillant a plan worthy of the creator of Tyrone Lanister.

By all means send a doppleganger and get "Windy".

During World War II a substitute actor-Montgomery often toured about.

Likewise in several medieval battles substitute knights dressed up as the king to confuse would be "hit squads".

You could also catch a few football games - though I realize that like we Atlanta fans this might be a mixed blessing.

And that is me cosplaying you two weeks ago at the RingCon in Germany:

You know you've truly made it in the world when strangers dress like you for Halloween. Congrats Mr. Martin! You are a success!

The iron throne
dear george

I have been reading a piece of colonial ethnography about Zululand and the succession of the kings/chieftains...which got me thinking about Westeros.

Any how (not that this is related to Zululand) I came to the conclusion that [in my opinion] a Targaryen should never return to the throne despite how noble and valiant etc etc, the current Targaryens are - the family reign is over.

I have really enjoyed Daenerys and related story lines, but I am also anticipating her demise which I suspect being even more epic than the red wedding.

By no means am I telling you how to write the story....I am just hypothesising in anticipation of the next book.

all the best
