This Weekend at the Jean Cocteau

We have two new movies opening this weekend at the Jean Cocteau... PLUS a short film, and a very special guest as well!

At the early show, we will be debuting KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM, a comedy/ adventure about a group of LARPers who, ah, inadvertently summon an actual succubus from the pit of hell.  (Don't you HATE it when that happens?)  It stars Ryan Kwanten, Steve Zahn (TREME), Summer Glau (SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES), Margarita Levieva, and our own Peter Dinklage (GAME OF THRONES).

And with KNIGHTS, we will also be showing EVE ANGELIC, a short film by local filmmaker Luca Ceccarelli, part of which was actually shot in the basement of 418 Montezuma Avenue, right under the Cocteau.

The second feature debut will be RAZE, a gut-wrenching new film from Tribeca.  Think FIGHT CLUB for keeps.  Think HUNGER GAMES with teeth.  Think BATTLE ROYALE without subtitles.

Coolest of all, after the RAZE screening, star ZOE BELL will be dropping by the Jean Cocteau via Skype to talk about the film and answer questions, and...

And?  Yes, yes, there's more.  After both KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM and RAZE, I will turning up to hand out some door prizes, including a couple of tickets to a certain very special preview screening coming up in March.  So be there!  You have to be present to win!

Oh, and we have a late late show too.  This week, THE WALL.  No, no, not the Night's Watch's Wall.  Pink Floyd's.

See you at the movies.

Movie Times
Do you mind if I ask what time they start? I'm trying to coordinate a drive with friends to the Jean Cocteau from Lubbock, Texas. Also, what time should we get there in order to get good seats?

Re: Movie Times
You can find all the showtimes on the Jean Cocteau website.

On Friday, KNIGHTS starts at 6:20, RAZE at 8:30. The theatre is small and intimate, only 125 seats. All of them are pretty good. I'd say that arriving twenty minutes before the film and you'll be fine. (You want to leave time to get some of our popcorn).

Now, coming in for the GAME OF THRONES marathons, that's somewhat different. For those, I'd say you had best be in line by 3:00 pm to be absolutely certain of getting in. You'll probably be okay by 4:00, but there's a slight risk, and if you get there at 5:00 pm, it will be a crapshoot.

Re: Movie Times
Mr. Martin,

Thank you for the advice on the start times for GoT. I've been trying to figure out how to work it.

I'm not sure I'll make it up for Knights of Badassdom but I will most certainly find it eventually.

Looking forward to some popcorn.

Is there any way those of us who live nowhere near Santa Fe might some day get to see Knights of Badassdom?
Jan. 30th, 2014 08:49 am (UTC)
Well, it's probably playing at a theatre near you as well. We're not the only ones showing it. And sooner or later it's bound to show up on DVDs, Blu-Rays, and Netflix. Everything does.

I believe I read that Knights is supposed to be available on demand through quite a few services the second week in February. A lot of indie theatres across the country are playing it or doing special showings for the next week or two so it's definitely worth looking for if you have a kind of non-traditional theater in your area.

Wish I was a bit closer to New Mexico (on the wrong side of Texas :-) ). The theater sounds great and the choices in films has been fun to read about!

Please bring Summer Glau into Game of Thrones!

Make Summer Glau a cool wandering warrior princess with Samurai swords and let her become the bodyguard of (damn, how to spell Kalheesi? ok got it) Khaleesi.

Curse you, GRRM! Stop telling me about all the awesome shit I can't go to! I'm stuck in Detroit! Have you no mercy for my poor, deprived little nerd heart? ;D

Looks like in this movie, Tyrion is the one paying the iron price :)

Just curious (I live nowhere near close enough to attend):

Do you know if the cut of Knights of Badassdom being released is the original director's cut by Joe Lynch, or the subsequent producer's cut by Wade Bradley?
Jan. 31st, 2014 02:28 am (UTC)
It's whatever cut the distributor has chosen to release. Probably the producer's cut. Most times, to show the director's cut in a movie theatre, you actually have to have the director present.

Of course, if Joe Lynch wants to come visit Santa Fe...

((I have been looking into this subject, since I would very much like to show the director's cuts of some older films, like BLADERUNNER and PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID. But the rights are not always easy to obtain)).

Directors Cut of Blade Runner! Yes please. I might hurt somebody for this...you know something small...like a spider.

It seems you are very much involved in the cinema business. Do you negotiate the rights yourself?

I keep wondering why don't other cinemas in USA and the world screen Game of Thrones, does HBO ban it or something?
Feb. 2nd, 2014 12:48 am (UTC)
It's a television show, not a theatrical feature. All sorts of legal hurdles need to be surmounted to show it in a movie house.

The marathon at the Cocteau is by special arrangement with HBO.

Thank you very much, I see.

I'm sure it can be done and worth all the hurdles.

Sent you a personal message, if you don't mind.

I'm fortunate enough to have worked with Adrienne Wilkinson (Raze). I did the poster for a film she produced called Seconds. I'm really excited to see this movie!

Now I wonder if the "Wit & Wisdom" series will be continued? A little bit something like that:

Ticket system
Any update on when the online ticket system is going to be overhauled? Currently trying to buy tickets for Raze and I keep getting an error page saying "An internal system error has occured. Please try your request at a later time."

Re: Ticket system
Yes, our ticket system sucks. We're working on it. That's what they tell me, anyway. What do I know? I write with WordStar.

I have actually watched the official trailer for Raze already on YouTube. INCREDIBLE! I cannot wait to go and see it in the cinema. I have been told it is an epic film.

Usually I love living in Florida but every time I see what you're doing at the Jean Cocteau I want to move west.
Every damned time.

Summer Glau
Should've had "Firefly" or "Serenity" in the parenthesis! She went from playing one of the most emotional characters on TV to one of the most emotionless (in Sarah Connor Chronicles). Such a talented actress. I know there are actors from Firefly who really want to be in Game of Thrones (Nathan Fillion, for example, began reading the books). I don't know who Summer could play. Maybe Val? Or Taena of Myr? If nothing else, she's gorgeous enough be a high-level whore.

Re: Summer Glau
Summer Glau is indeed gorgeous... but she's way too big a name, and would command far too much in the way of salary, to be a realistic consideration for a small role like Taena.
