Something Old, Something New

Hiya kids, hiya hiya hiya.

With season 4 of HBO's GAME OF THRONES almost upon us, I thought the time was ripe for me to give my readers another taste of WINDS OF WINTER.  So I will shortly be posting a new sample chapter there.  (If you have not read the Arianne chapter that has been up there lo these many months, better do so soon, because Arianne will be coming down when the new sample goes up).

The new chapter is actually an old chapter.  But no, it's not one I've published or posted before, and I don't even think I've read it at a con (could be wrong there, I've done readings at so many cons, it all tends to blur together).  So it's new in that it is material that no one but my editors (well, and Parris, and David and Dan, and a few others) have ever seen before, but it's old in that it was written a long time ago, predating any of the samples that you have seen.  The first draft was, at any rate.  I've rewritten it a dozen times since then.

Anyway, I've blathered on about it long enough, I will let the text speak for itself.

Chapter title is "Mercy."

(And as with past samples, please don't talk about it here.  There are dozens of great places to talk about the books on the web, but this is not one of them.  If you want to talk about the chapter after you've read it, check out Westeros or Tower of the Hand or one of the many other great Ice & Fire sites).

Watch my website.  Coming soon.

Very cool! Can't wait to read this in a few hours.

A couple of years back, reports were you offered to read a Arianne chapter or a Damphair chapter at a con. The audience voted for the Arianne chapter even though you hinted there was something deliciously twisted in the Damphair chapter. I've always been wondering if you would release that one before the WOW came out in some context, but you've held it thus far. I am very curious, but will gladly wait for the WOW. In the meantime, thanks for whetting our appetites!

Song and Dance
I am not ashamed to admit that I did a little dance last night when I saw the post announcing the new chapter would be up and sang a little nonsense song about who the POV character was just now. Thankfully no one was home to judge me but the cat.

Amazing chapter! I know it wasn't explicitly mentioned so it probably wasn't meant to be her, but I got the implication Arya was playing Sansa, or at least someone loosely based off her. You're breaking my heart! Thankyou :) (not for the heart-breaking).

Congratulations
George, I just finished reading it.

Congratulations. Your ability to continuously push the envelope in the scope of this story is unprecedented. Shakespearean, self-referential, dark, playful, tragic, climactic...it has it all. This is one of the most sadistically beautifully chapters you've written. I am completely disturbed and elated at the same time. The excitement this gives me for TWOW is incredible! Can't wait. Thank you, George!

Website Down
I'm sure this is a bandwidth issue since there are probably thousands of people wishing to access the new chapter, but nevertheless, I have to inform GRRM that his website is down.

"She had dreamed of wolves again, of running through some dark pine forest with a great pack at her hells, hard on the scent of prey."

Found a typo, should be "heels" not hells.

Can I be one of your editors? I'm an expert with your writing, lol.

typos
And there's an 'it' missing from 'you can keep in your breeches'.
Imagine being a proofreader for winds of winter... :D

Timeline error?
First of all, beautiful (and disturbing!) chapter! Thank you so much for that.

One question, if I may (and my apologies if this is not the right place to ask about this): (VERY SLIGHT spoilers)

The chapter obviously takes place after the epilogue of Dance, yet there's a mention of Cersei as if she's still acting as regent. Was that a relict from an older version of this chapter which would have taken place earlier in the timeline?

"Mercy passed an old man with a lantern walking the other way, and envied him his light."
