Ratings, Renewals, Reviews

HBO has renewed GAME OF THRONES for a fifth season.  Great news.  But hardly surprising.  I mean, it wasn't official, but everyone and his brother pretty well knew that we would get a fast renewal for season five.

But HBO has also renewed GAME OF THRONES for a sixth season, and that one is surprising.  I don't think even David and Dan suspected that was coming.  I certainly did not.  HBO never orders more than one season at a time, not in recent memory.  So this is pretty unprecedented.  And pretty great.

The renewal comes on the heels of record ratings for the premiere episode of season four.  "Two Swords" translated to more than six million viewers.  (Just imagine if we'd had three or four or five swords!!).  The episode netted the highest rating of any HBO show since the finale of THE SOPRANOS, which is pretty amazing, considering all the great television that HBO has aired in the intervening years.

The reviews have been pretty extraordinary as well.  Especially this one:

So... what can one say?  It has been a pretty extraordinary week.

My congratulations to David Benioff, Dan Weiss, our incredible directors, our amazing crew, and the best cast in television.

So happy for you and everyone involved :) ...and me^^ Do you happen to know if the main cast signs up per season or will they -well those who survive as far as the books go-sign up for season 6 as well? I'd be much more calm if I knew Maisie Williams isn't going anywhere soon^^.

It's a testament to the fantastic source material and the wonderful job David, Dan, and the rest of the crew have done in bringing it to life. Congratulations well deserved! Looking forward to the rest of this season and especially Winds of Winter!

True detective was probably the best show to air in recent memory and Matthew is fast becoming the best actor around (daniel day lewis needs to get out of retirement) but honestly season 4 of game of thrones might surpass Breaking Bad season 5 and probably the best season to ever air in TV.

The writing is there, and so is the acting (GoT has the largest amount of great actors).

HBO really is holding up to its reputation and with TD and GoT on their belts they now have truly some of the best TV shows ever.

TRUE DETECTIVE was an amazing show. And BOARDWALK EMPIRE had a terrific season as well. HBO has had a great year, no doubt about it. I am pleased and proud that we can be a part of it.

It's the writing.
It's the writing. Feeling an emotional connection with the characters.

Fantastic news. Game of Thrones really is the best TV show ever made. There's no denying it. The fact it has welcomed newcomers to the delights of the fantasy genre is what I also find to be so unusual. I have many friends that would never have gone near the fantasy genre, even myself once upon a time, but now we all share the love of Game of Thrones. It is set in the realms of fantasy, but it's themes and motifs are universal and that is why it is speaking to people.

Well done to everyone involved :)

At this point. it's pretty much a no-brainer to keep going with a winner.
I would like some day to shake the hand of the man who convinced HBO to go first class on the production from day 1. I still get a laugh from your having gotten tired of the Hollywoodites telling you that your great ideas would be too expensive to shoot.

It would be nice to see options on Fevre Dream and Armageddon Rag (I assume there are such) come to fruition . . .

Yay!!! Wonderful news!

The only TV show I watch. It’s just on a whole another level, even if they do deviate from the books every now and then. Seriously, the HBO could’ve approved two more seasons, a prequel season and a couple of spin-offs :-)

Hoping This Won't Affect Your Writing
First off congrats! As much as I am anticipating the next book I really hope HBO does not pressure you for publishing the next 2 books.

Next Seasons
Congratulations, Mr.Martin! Do you have any predictions about events from your books, which will be included in 5 and 6 seasons? Will D&D exceed the limits of the 4th and 5th books?
From Russia with love.
