Godzilla Is Coming...

... to the Jean Cocteau this weekend.

No, no, not the new guy... the ORIGINAL Big, Green, and Scary.

Starting May 9, for a special limited run, we'll be showing the original Japanese version of GODZILLA (aka GOJIRA, aka KING OF THE MONSTERS).  Not the Americanized version either, you won't see Perry Mason... er, Raymond Burr... here.

If you haven't seen GODZILLA before, you may be surprised.  This is not the camp Godzilla of the later films, when he was hanging out with Rodan and Mothra and battling robot versions of himself.  This Godzilla is no one's monster buddy, and the film is much darker than any of the sequels.

In honor of Godzilla coming to the Cocteau, our bar will be offering a special cocktail: the TOKYO STOMP.

See you at the movies.

Well, big, greyscale, and scary....

When I was young a local independent channel showed a montage of various scenes to advertise its nightly eight o'clock movies, including a close-up of the Big Guy's head breathing out atomic destruction. They had to re-edit their montage because they ran the promo between six and 7:30, and parents were writing in and calling because their little kids were screaming and nightmaring as a result.

I was of the same age, but it wasn't Godzilla which had me scared; I saw the full American cut with Raymond Burr more than once. It was other monster movies which scared the bejesus out of me. Look up Kaltiki -- the Immortal Monster sometime -- I'm not, the nightmare memory is so clear I'm still too uncomfortable to watch it again, a half-century later.
