Return of the Ice Dragon

My children's book THE ICE DRAGON -- actually an illustrated and edited version of a short story that I wrote back in the 70s -- has been out of print in the US for some time, as a number of my readers have informed me over the past year.

That's because Tor was preparing an entirely new edition, which I'm now thrilled to be able to announce.

Same story, but ALL NEW ARTWORK.  This edition of THE ICE DRAGON will be lavishly illustrated by award-winning fantasy artist LUIS ROYO.

Have a look at the cover:

The new ICE DRAGON will be flying to a bookstore near you on OCTOBER 21 of this year!

Yeah, that looks appropriate for children and not scary at all.

Who says children's books need to be "not scary at all."

I loved scary stories when I was a kid.

That's what hiding under the covers is for...

ahhh so that's why you were keeping mum when I brought this up a few times! Looks great! I bought an ebook of the original edition, TOR's previous one, as the BOOK book was out of print...may have to pick this up! Will this version be the edited one, or the full one? I ask because you mentioned 'edited'.

I like to consider this part of the Ice and Fire mythos - something Old Nan would have told the Stark children when they were babes perhaps.

This could be a good book to introduce kids into fantasy story, I hope this book has the same human expression that you've made, but of of course to adapted to kids.

Greeting from Brazil, very hopefully to this and The Winds of Winter.

Wow I bet yer as pleased as punch! I bet he was thrilled, too!

That looks great. I read this off to my husband and his reply was "Whoa - Tor's going to run out of books."

In honor of Gary T aka Scorchbeanie
One of your most loyal fans, Gary T, alias Scorchbeanie on the Tower of the Hand site, passed away suddenly today. He had over 37,000 posts discussing the books and Game of Thrones show as well as life insights. He moderated a reread of a portion of the novels. A memorial site was set up at http://towerofthehand.com/blog/2014/06/25-in-memory-of-scorchiebeanie/index.html?&#a,63 and you can see the many folks whose lives he touched. The TOTH horde feels that a character named Scorch would be a great addition to TWoW and honor his memory. It is rare that a person who most know only through a conversation thread on the Internet can affect so many individuals, and it would be a fitting tribute for him to live on in your work.

Dear Mr. Martin.

Grand Maester in training (just received my Maesters Degree) at the City-del College of New York working with gels and thickened liquids. Long time lj-reader, first time poster: was wondering if you might be interested in discussing the reality of wildfire, which I think could be more science than fiction. Things to think about: with great power comes great ability to make exploding jellies.

New illustrations
I thought this was a childrens book, that cover looks brutal. Cool, but not for kids.

When you say "kids"...
I really hesitate to try and put an age cap on these things, but generally speaking, do you think a 4-5 yr old could handle The Ice Dragon? I love your work and would love to share it with the little ones, but I don't want them laying awake at night. At least not for a few more years when they read ASOIAF ;)

Well, four might be a bit young.

Re: The Ice Dragon and other earlier works
Awesome! Looking forward to buying my copy, I've always liked The Ice Dragon.

Hope this is not overstepping our bounds by posting here, but just wanted to mention that the Bastards of Kingsgrave podcast has been doing some *spoiler full* reviews of your earlier works (Unsound Variations, A Song for Lya, The Second Kind of Loneliness, so far). We'll be getting to The Ice Dragon eventually, so that may be of interest to any readers of these works.
