Had a great time last weekend at the Santa Fe Concorso, the biggest auto show in the southwest. I love old cars (our family never had enough money to own a car when I was a kid, so I walked and rode the bus and assembled plastic models of cars when other kids were building fighter planes), and there were some amazing ones on display.

The best of show can be seen on the Concorso's website, here:

Beautiful cars, no doubt, though there were so many on display that I would have been hard pressed to pick if I had been a judge.

I did take pictures of some of my own personal favorites.

Those were all cool -- especially that 300SL Gullwing, a car I loved when it was only a plastic model on my desk in 1962. Got to love that Tucker too. I mean, hell, a Tucker.

The BEST part of the weekend, though, was the Concorso invited me to exhibit my own new wheels, a custom-painted Tesla Model S.

I am pleased to say that my Tesla was the hit of the electric car division (not that the Volt and the Leaf that flanked me provided much competition), and always seemed to have a curious crowd around it.

FWIW, I bought the Tesla a couple of months ago, but with my recent trips to France, Switzerland, San Diego, Scotland, England, and LA, I have hardly had time to drive her. Something I am looking forward to doing over the next few months. But, yes, she's gorgeous, she's comfortable, and she goes like a bat out of hell.

(And yes, I still have my old Mazda RX-7 too. What can I say? I hang on to things. And it won't be long until that RX-7 is old enough to count as an antique too).

"I hang on to things"
"I hang on to things" made me chuckle (as you sure don't hang on to main characters ;-) )

[really love that nobody is save btw]

Not bad but
Not bad but a dragon would be much cooler.

There should be a dragon on the car, at least. And some kind of fire breathing device to scare off paparazzi... Just saying

Tesla = my dream car
Love your Tesla and the color! You should get a roadster too George. For those not up to date on why Tesla's are so awesome, this little illustrated article kind of sums it up brilliantly: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/tesla .

Love the Tesla, George! My next car will be electric. Of course it won't be a Tesla or even slightly cool but still electric it shall be!

Your car is beautiful! The colour is the exact right colour. I have heard a lot about Tesla cars. Now I see what all the fuss is about :)

Electric Cars -- too quiet?
Hi George,

Those vintage cars are certainly lovely to look at. And well maintained!

I'm told electric vehicles are extremely quiet. I've been a passenger in a hybrid and the silence was almost disturbing. A friend tells me some manufacturers of electric vehicles actually had to add a device to make a noise on purpose so the driver had some indication the vehicle was running. I suppose there could be a period of acclimation when making the switch from a combustion automobile to an electric automobile. How as your experience with the Tesla?

Re: Electric Cars -- too quiet?
Yes, it is very quiet... but I like that.

When I want sound, I turn on the radio.

WOIAF delay
hi george, slightly off topic, but I and a number of users on Westeros have received several emails from amazon changing the delivery date of World of Ice and Fire abou 4-5 times. It was originally 28th October, then moved to 26th November and is now 8th December. do you happen to know anything about these delays or when we might be able to receive the book? really excited to see it. thanks

Re: WOIAF delay
So far as I know, the book is being released on October 28. I know nothing about any delays.

I like old cars
But your Tesla is gorgeous. Surprised it wasn't Jet Green or Giant Blue instead of Viking Purple.

I sure would love to own a Tesla Model S. It looks like THE ideal daily commuter vehicle. If only it were were within my price range. . . Let me know when you're upgrading to a newer model and I'll buy yours!

The only drawback I can see with that car is that it would be impossible to make good time on a road trip, what with a a range of less than 300 miles between charging. (My brother, father, and I have the propensity to do overnight straight shots across the U.S. when we choose to travel, stopping only for gas and a meal)

A Tesla and an RX-7? Now that's a nice mix. A roommate of mine in college had an RX-7 -- nothing felt faster... Plus being able to say "My engine has 3 total moving parts" is kind of fun. Someday I'm hoping to buy a Tesla of my own, but it's a few days out yet.

Great shots! Thanks for sharing!

White car in the first pic
That white car in the first pic, I could *swear* there were blueprints for it in my dad's old Meccano #10 set...

Your finger (I presume) slightly blacking out the camera in that picture creates a rather cool effect of an impending massive storm. :)

*sigh* Thank you so much for the car porn!

A fellow rotary owner
I knew there was something I liked about GRRM that I couldn't quite figure out. A fellow rotary owner! I have the RX-8 myself. Not as legendary as the RX-7 but still fun. The Tesla is impressive though.

I found the passage in Armageddon Rag referring to the habit of cars to be memorable. Did you name your Tesla?

Re: Daydream
Not yet, but I will.

I've owned three RX-7s, a 1981 and two 1985s. They were, respectively, Nightflyer, Gray Alys, and Sandsnake.

I simply can’t imagine our lives without classic cars.
