No Fun

The NFL was certainly the No Fun League for me this week.

The Jets lost on Thursday to the despised New England Patriots.  The Giants lost yesterday to the hated Dallas Cowboys.  So not only did both of my teams go down, but they went down to their most bitter rivals, two teams I loathe.  Gak.

The Jets played a much better game than most expected, it must be said.  Rex Ryan is a terrific coach, but I fear he is going to be fired at the end of this season.  He shouldn't be.  The fault is not his.  The GM has simply not given him enough to work with.  Starting at the QB position.   The Jets are not going anywhere with Geno Smith or Michael Vick behind center.  Bring back Mark Sanchez.  Bring back Chad Pennington.  Bring back Vinnie Testaverde.  Hell, bring back Joe Willie Namath.  Or maybe give Matt Simms a chance...

The Giants... well, losing Victor Cruz was a crippling blow.  Though I do have high hopes for our new WR, Odell Beckham.

But I don't think this is playoff year for either of my teams.

The Jets did make big news over the weekend by trading for Percy Harvin.   He's an explosive player, and they only gave up a 6th round draft choice to get them, so that may help some.   Will it help enough to save Rex Ryan's job?  I fear not, but one can hope.

Watching Cruz break down while being carted off the field was rough, especially since the Birds had more or less cinched their win and the play was meaningless. I hope he comes back next season better and stronger.

I couldn't agree more on Rex. I don't care for the guy but he's a great coach who has done a lot with very little.

The darkest timeline
At least the Giants didn't start off the season 0-6. That's the only bright side.

I agree with you about Rex. I think he'll get the axe simply because of the NYC media and the GM wanting to put somebody of his choice into the position. I don't think that is the smart move, but it'll probably happen. Also, I wouldn't be thrilled about trading for Harvin, he seemed to be the cause of a lot of drama on his former teams, so that should go over great in NYC, at least for the tabloids. The biggest surprise of the year, in my opinion, has been the NFC East looking like a significantly improved division this year. Dallas and Philly look pretty legit.

Giants Not as Bad as You Think
In regards to your teams, while the Jets are not looking too hot the Giants actually looked pretty good in the game against the Cowboys. Beckham Jr. was fantastic and Eli was starting to look like his old self. Add that to the fact that they almost beat the team with the single best record in the NFL currently and I would think your Giants have a solid chance at the playoffs. And as you know all too well, just getting into the playoffs gives the Giants and Eli Manning a solid shot at another Super Bowl title. In other thoughts, is it just me or has this been your first NFL post this year, George? Have you been watching less or just hard at work on a certain little book we are all eager to read?

Don't give up on the GMen just yet!
It's not over sir, they have 4 games in a row later they could win against the Jags, Titans, Redskins and Rams. If these terrible Offense and Defensive lines can somehow pull through after the bye and pull out a win or 2 in the next 4 especially against the Cowboys and Seahawks they might still be in the playoff chase. Of course this is wishful thinking but it has yet to be written. Coughlin needs to light a fire under their fucking asses. GO BIG BLUE!

I have tickets to see my beloved jets play the vikings in the land of always winter aka minneapolis....they are waiting on the construction of their new stadium and currently playing games at tcd bank field, an outdoor stadium.

The question is, do I really need to watch my Jets who will probably be 2-10 play the 4-8 vikes in sub zero weather??

What would George RR do? Other then get a suite ;)

Beware of Percy Harvin the perennial shirker and locker room grump. He didn't even play seven games in his years with Seattle. At least the Jets got him for what he was worth.

Rex is an excellent defensive coordinator. As a head coach his personality has led his team to what we've seen. The Harvin addition would have been fantastic for this one season if only the Jets had a QB.

The Giants aren't as bad as their record. They aren't great, but I fully expect the 'Boys go come back down to earth. Of course they could go on to win it all. They are extremely talented and if for once they play to their ability throughout the season they'll run away with the conference. We can only hope they wake up.

This is the loud grunt that can be heard outside my window, every Sunday while I'm trying to work:

"E... A... G... L... E... S... EAGOOOOOOOOOOOLSSSS!!!!!"

Followed by an occasional, "THROW ME ANOTHER YUENGLING!!!"

Speaking of... I thought it was the Eagles who were the main Giants rival, not Dallas, at least the commentators lead me to believe that. I guess everyone in the same division wants to tear each others' throats out, and Philly hates Dallas just as much as New York does - should make for an interesting Thanksgiving.

just be glad you aren't a Browns fan, we went from the highest of highs and crashed right back to earth in a game that showed every weakness they have. It's not easy being a Cleveland sports fan.

Gotta say the Giants look better this year than they have the past few. It's certainly possible they sneak into the playoffs.

Sorry about your teams but...
The Chiefs actually didn't blow it in spite of the many stupid mistakes made and the new field goal kicker didn't choke, which is what I expected from him. And tomorrow the World Series starts here in KC. Wow. Never dreamed I'd be saying that any time soon.

Did you ever think you'd be saying "Bring back Chad Pennington"?

Percy Harvin certainly has the talent (I've been following him since he played for my alma mater, Florida) but has apparently not been a good team player since reaching the NFL. Perhaps Rex can straighten him out.

And hey, how 'bout them Dolphins? :->

Maybe this will cheer you up?
You probably already saw this, but some guy last year drew some NFL players as GoT / ASOIAF characters: http://lightlybuzzed.com/2014/01/08/nfl-players-game-thrones-characters/ . This has season 3 and book 3 spoilers.

The fault is in our stars.

Go Pats!!!
Mr Martin, my love of the ASOIAF series is second only to my love of the New England Patriots. There is very little I enjoy more than watching the defeat of your beloved Jets in prime time. Geno Smith is awful. I may lose my Patriots Nation card by saying this, but, you are right about Rex Ryan. Great coach continually undermined by a terrible GM. I will leave you with this...as a Red Sox fan I got very used to the addage "wait 'til next year"...hopefully you can find some solace in that.

Are you a hockey fan?

Being a Jersey native, I assume you have some love for the Devils, and they are looking solid this year. Maybe it's that time of the season to switch your focus? As a DC native, I learned to do that long ago... :(

You have to admit...
that the blocked field goal was a beautiful thing at the end of the Jets/Pats game! Of all the things in my life over the last decade and a half, the Pats winning has been one of the few that have been consistently good.

As far as the G-men, I used to love them, even sent you an e-mail about ten years ago talking about how cool a Giants vs Patriots Superbowl would be... Now they are like an ex-girlfriend who has decided to make you life miserable after the break-up even though you keep wishing her well.
Oct. 22nd, 2014 10:54 am (UTC)
Odell is a solid 7 year kinda player.
Saints would have snapped him up if the G men didn't.

vick = ser barristan
Maybe Rex is the mother of dragons... Just needs to light a fire under his dead eggs.

There's a lot of Talent on the team but honestly ur problems get blamed on the offense but they score enough points even with that bum geno. Gotta stop the opposition.

As this board's #1 Cowboys fan I cannot tell you George, oh wait I can! Oh how I love this time of year when I can mischievously take an abundance of glee in your misfortune as a Giants fan. It may be immature of me, but it fills me with a feeling of elation I can scarcely describe. The only thing that might make me happier on this subject would be to shut out the loathsome Eagles and pathetic Redskins this season! It is a long season though and too early to tell, but one win at a time and this one was a joyous one for yours truly. I'll always admire you as a writer however, lowly Giants fan as you may be.

The Jaguars finally won one.
Our defense is meshing better and better every week although we did have a couple of injuries last week. And our baby QB has moments when he shines and moments when he doesn't but he never stops trying.

So don't count on the Jags to roll over when your favorite teams play them, is all I'm saying.

NFL Loyalty
Hmm, seems to me that since you live in NM now, and you are not a fan of the Cowboys, you should consider having at least some loyalty to our Denver Broncos. No? If not, perhaps all you need is one game at Mile High to change that. I have an extra ticket to the last home game of the season against the hated Raiders if you re interested in joining me.
