Iron from Ice

There's a new GAME OF THRONES computer game on the way, this one from Telltale Games.

Unlike the earlier games from Cyanide, this is an HBO license, derived from the television series rather than the novels, so the characters will look like their TV incarnations, and in many cases will be voiced by the actors who play them on the show.   The action is centered around House Forrester, bannermen to the Starks of Winterfell whose seat in the wolfswood.  (Some Forresters are mentioned in the Stannis chapters, when he marches south from the Wall to attack Winterell, but very little is said about them, which made them ideal for game purposes).

The game will be sort of a side story to the show (and books), swirling and around major events.  Ty Franck, my longtime assistant who went off to become half of James S.A. Corey and write the Expanse novels, acted as a consultant on story and continuity for Telltale.

The first teaser trailer has just been released.  Have a look:

Seven hells... SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! This looks pretty cool, I really enjoyed hearing Lena's voice and to be honest, I smirked when I saw the game rating, haha. Can't wait for the rest of the trailers! :)

Super excited for this, George. Do you think you'll be giving this game a play when it comes out? I'd pay good money to see that! (Let's Play Game of Thrones Season 2 with GRRM!)

Previous Telltale games that I have played were very predictable. I think they are mostly appreciated by fans for new stories in setting that they like, not for the game quality really.
I expect that the story with this game will be canon, but I will wait for some reviews before deciding whether to buy it or not.

Minor Spoiler Alert
You might have mentioned something that hasn't happened on the show yet. Probably not a big deal.

Game looks cool I will definitely be buying. Hearing Ramen's score brings me back to season 1, what an amazing job he's done.

Hmmmm could be just the thing to get for my BF as a present!

GREAT (sory for the english)
This guys did a really great job with The Walking dead, based on the original cómic.
I'm waiting for this game for a long time, i think it will be a really good game.
I'm waiting for a big rpg based on song of ice and fire, for pc... meanwhile, i will keep playing ASOIAF the RPG with my red priest and a lot of dices

looks good George! I am looking forward to giving it a shot, as well as seeing the rest of the 'episodes' develop.

Speaking of gaming, I highly recommend the Elder Scrolls series (Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. There is an 'Elder Scrolls Online' but it's a MMO).

Oh my goodness! I just saw this game last night on my Steam account. Pre-Ordered it already!!

Old Forrester
This is wonderful! Can't wait to play it, though my very nerdy complaint is that I wish I could have played as Benjicott Branch, because nothing says "badass northman" better than a name like Benjicott

Wasn't the Cyanide RPG game also under an HBO license? They used music from the TV series, and had a few actors lend their voices (James Cosmo, Conleth Hill).
Nov. 21st, 2014 05:21 pm (UTC)
No, the Cyanide deal predated my contract with HBO. As did a number of my other sub-licenses: Dark Sword Miniatures, Green Ronin, Fantasy Flight, Shire Post coins, etc.

This game looks fantastic, I can't wait to play it!

By the way, since we've heard so little about House Forrester in the books, is it safe to say that they consulted you or your notes for the Forrester family tree and info on their backstory? How much input did you have on the story, or was that all up to Ty Franck?

Also, do you consider this game to be canon?

Nothing is "book canon" but the novels. Even the TV show is not canon in that sense.

The game may be "HBO canon," but that's a different matter.

Ty and the team at Telltale devised the story.

Hi George. Does that mean the World of Ice and Fire isn't canon?

I do hope the game does for the 'Ice and Fire universe' as it did for that of The Walking Dead.

I've just started re-reading the great five for the fourth time, in anticipation of finishing Dance With Dragons in time for Winds of Winter next summer (said in hope rather than expectation). This game has come at the perfect time. I'm in full Ice and Fire mode once again.

I'm really looking forward to this. and can't wait to play it, but i'm afraid my Best Friend Since A Billion Years Ago, Aeri, will disappear once it comes out. She's going to lose her mind (in the best way) once it is released and play it for days. She's SO excited for it.

Very Excited!
I can barely wait for this game to come out. George I was looking at some virtual shops and noticed that there are lots of cool castle replicas for Harry Potter and LOTR, so I thought with myself; why not game of thrones? I think it would be great if you could recommend your replica producers to make castle replicas of the most beloved castles, like Winterfell. And please make sure that they use the description from the books to make it, since the show definitely didn't do your castles justice. Thanks for your time!

I am not a fan of these type of games but I will definitely get this one because I love the world of Ice & Fire. HOWEVER, I won't pretend I'm not slightly disappointed that it is based on show universe, not book universe. Granted, I understand why they're doing that... but still.

The game some people have blasted (and to be fair, many have praised), the Cyanide game called "Game of Thrones" has a great story and voice acting and is definitely based on the book version of reality. Sure, the controls are awkward, I'll give the critics that, but the story is great. The voice acting is as good as it gets. So, if you're into playing more in Mr. Martin's world, jump on that too.

Game of Thrones
I am working with Game of Thrones for my MA thesis, and I would like to ask you about Daenerys and the horses. It is not to make theories for the upcoming books or anything. In fact, I am only working on the first book.

I hope you see this comment and be so kind to give the chance of asking you by email.

Considering how successful Telltale's Walking Dead videogames have been, this is probably going to be a huge success and sell like hotcakes.

Game looks sick, bro.
Game looks tight. Hope it's as good as the show. This tv show is the bomb. George is like Vince Gillian (lets not go crazy no one's as good as Vince), but it's a dope show. Props on creating it George.

This looks very interesting. Any word on which platform(s) it will be available on? And if it will be available on a physical disc after all episodes have been released? (I have crappy internet at my house, so downloading even small bits of DLC is a chore.)

Telltale Games' The Walking Dead Game is amazing, so I can't wait to play this one too! :)

I used to work with many of the Telltale crew and they are top-notch.

Telltale has a unique style that is accessible to non-gamers too.

This game will be great. Very excited!

What's your purpose?
Poet Özkan tells that,
Jon Snow is our watcher,
Who touchs him is a big sucker,
Because of the love of follower,
You will be cursed sooner or later,
There will be no one to hear,
As the Poets told in Rains of Castemere.

Jon Snow, Jon Snow,
Commender of the Night Watchers,
What happened to you, dont you hear?
Get up now, there they come the whitewalker,
You are the shield of the Realm,
Take your bastard sword and,
Tuck the ass of Ramsay.

We know who killed you great Chief,
Nor the Wick or Bowen Marsh,
We are the blinds that could not see,
He was the man who tells the story,
But now we know who planned this treachery,
And that will not bring anything...
Except our bloody tear.

Don't take these words easy George the Whitewalker,
He was the only memory,
That we have of Ned Stark.
Maybe you dont know but,
North never forget...
Now go and beg the Melisandre the Red Sister...
Or you will see the Winter...

Apparently my reading comprehension level is a bit low tonight, so I saw "Traveller's Tale" as the company and though "What could be more crazy that LEGO: Game Of Thrones". Talk about kingdom building.

But I tangent, alas.

As you probably know, Telltale made The Walking Dead comic into a pseudo-adventure game back in 2012. The first season of that game received heaps of well-deserved praise for its story and characters and for being genuinely sad. If you ever have free time (HA!), you should give it a shot, since it's less a real 'game' and more an interactive story. It's also pretty short, divided into five episodes typically under two hours long each.

I was a bit disappointed in Season 2, but hopefully they learned some lessons from that going into this.

I do have to admit, though, that I was kinda hoping they would do the same thing to your series that they did with TWD: namely, whether it was based on The Walking Dead TV show or The Walking Dead comic was almost irrelevant because it was telling its own story that just happened to share the same world.

Westeros and Essos are so richly detailed that it seems kind of a pity to place too much emphasis on the familiar faces like Tyrion or Cersei, rather than allowing the new cast of characters to delve into a view of Westerosi politics we haven't seen before.

Anyway, cautiously optimistic for this. Thanks for the update, George!

For some reason I always have in my head... a game like Langrisser/Warsong, depicting Tyrion fighting with the clansmen.

Does this mean any future games will be using the HBO License?
