Do You Know the Way to San Jose?

 ... or maybe Menlo Park?

As it happens, I was out in that neck of the woods yesterday, with a couple free hours before heading to the airport to return to Santa Fe, so I did some surprise drop-in stock signings at three local bookstores.

Those of you in northern California, if you are looking for autographed copies of LOWBALL or THE ICE DRAGON or THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE or ROGUES or any of my Ice & Fire novels, hardcover or paperback, check out:

KEPLER'S BOOKS, 1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park

BARNES & NOBLE , 3600 Stevens Creek Blvd, San Jose

HICKLEBEE's, 1378 Lincoln Avenue, San Jose

You'll find signed copies of my books at all of them... while the supplies last.

(Which won't be long.  Especially at Hicklebee's).

Would have loved to drop by some of the other great bookstores in the Bay Area as well, but we ran out of time.

And here I am with my copy of TWOIAF in Oklahoma seething with jealousy.

Anyways, thanks for all you do, George.

The sage asked the fool, what is the path to happiness. Last replied immediately, as if he was asked about the road to the nearest town: "amaze yourself and live on the street"
! "Stowe - said the sage, - you ask too much, enough already to wonder myself"
Fool replied: "But how can you constantly surprised not despising the time?"

All three stores within striking distance of me, and I don't get paid until Friday. Le sigh. (And yes, Hicklebee's is marvelous. I don't get there often enough.)

You rock, man. Seriously.

I LOVE KEPLER'S!!! They were the bookstore that steered me to the Dragon Keeper children's book series for my daughter. Wonderful, wonderful staff there!

Thank You from Barnes and Noble
I just wanted to say thank you from the booksellers of Barnes and Noble of Stevens Creek. It really brightened our day. It was really kind of you.

I'm curious to how you do those signings. Just wander around the store scribbling in your books, or do you talk to the store first?

Brandon Sanderson does it all the time in airports and sometimes as GRRM did in local bookstores. He usually presents them with photo ID because he's less recognizable than GRRM. I imagine GRRM would attempt to ID himself but the store would probably recognize him. Either way it isn't smart for an author to randomly start signing books in a store without telling them as it can been seen as vandalism if the store doesn't know who he is.

Saw you on the news tonight. Was a great thing you did for the guy with cancer!

First of all, thanks for your wonderful work. I suffer from an anxiety disorder with agoraphobia (fear of leaving home)and reading your books is the best way to forget about my condition, maybe I cannot leave my home physically but my mind can travel from The Wall to the Free Cities and that's the best drug I've found to cope with this. I wish I could see you someday, somewhere, when my agoraphobia (which is my personal Winter) ends and I can enjoy a long Spring. Sorry for my English, I'm Spaniard and due to my disorder I can't study the language as much as I would like. Best regards from Spain (also known as Dorne on the screen) and thanks again for everything.

Please come to the Syracuse/Watertown NY area. I promise the snow will melt at some point.

Winter is coming. Winter is always around the corner in Northern New York. :)

how about Madison, WI?
We love authors in Madison. We have lots of bookstores too!

Hope you make it here someday.

So what do bookstore clerks say when you drop in out of the blue?
Nov. 25th, 2014 04:47 am (UTC)
"Hello," usually. And "thanks."
Nov. 26th, 2014 11:56 am (UTC)
Hi George. On the subject of your books, the internet seems plagued lately with 'clickbait' articles claiming Winds of Winter is delayed until X date.

Do these articles annoy you any, given that something that has never had an official release date cannot technically be delayed?

Stuff like that first started popping up before the publication of A FEAST FOR CROWS. I used to try to correct them, but it's a fruitless chore. I have long since learned to just ignore them.

When there's news about WOW, it will appear here. Ignore the rest, it's all guesses and nonsense.

Thanks George. And will do.

You Make us fan so happy.
So I stopped at the Jean Cocteau, to get two copies of " The World of Ice and Fire" for a friend and I. The smile on their face, to have one with your Signature was enough to break my heart. I Brought mine to work here at HP and have had to threatening people with violence to get my copy back. =P

Thank you for you taking the time to sign books it does mean the world to so many.

Future signings?
Sort of off-topic, but still about signed books. I noticed that your "Next Appearances" calendar on you homepage lists two appearances in Texas. Do you know yet if you'll be doing signings at either place? Thanks!

Re: Future signings?
Details are still being worked out. Offhand, I don't believe I will be signing at College Station, but there may be one at Nacogdoches.

Okay, how many people can I text/email right now to go snag me a copy... boyfriend was just saying he was puzzled as to what to get me for Christmas, and he lives near that B&N. Let's hope they still have some! Love to come to a signing in the Bay sometime. Thanks for stopping by the stores you did! Kepler's is so wonderful!

Autograph to Sweden?
Is it possible to get an autographed book sent to Sweden? I can't imagine anything that would make my boyfriend happier <3

Re: Autograph to Sweden?
You can get autographed copies of my books -- and books by many other fine authors as well -- from the bookstore at the Jean Cocteau Cinema. See my recent blog posts below for details.

I am sorry, but I can no longer do personalizations or individual inscriptions. But all the books sold by the Cocteau are signed.

Next time you're in the Bay Area, you should check out Borderlands Books in the Mission. I got my copy of The World of Ice and Fire there - excellent local bookstore!
