Awards, Awards

Award season is at hand in Hollywood, and GAME OF THRONES is racking up the nominations.

The show scored three nods from SAG, the Screen Actors Guild.  Peter Dinklage was nominated as Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series, along with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey of TRUE DETECTIVE, Steve Buschemi from BOARDWALK EMPIRE, and Kevin Spacey for HOUSE OF CARDS.   The cast as a whole was nominated for Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama, and our stunt team was nominated for Best Action Performance by an Ensemble.

Variety has the full list at http://variety.com/2014/film/news/sag-awards-nominations-birdman-boyhood-1201375775/

This year's Golden Globe have also just been announced.  The Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated GAME OF THRONES in Best Drama.  The competition is THE GOOD WIFE, DOWNTON ABBEY, THE AFFAIR, and HOUSE OF CARDS.  (Very surprised not to see BOARDWALK EMPIRE on that list; their final season was astounding.  MANHATTAN also deserved a nod, I think.  This is truly the Golden Age of television drama).

As ever, it is an honor to be nominated, to be part of the conversation.

(I remain skeptical about our chances of actually winning, the bias against fantasy being what it is).

Just so you know, you might want to dispel rumours of tWOW being announced on the 21st -- the hype is real for a lot of diehards that are grasping at straws.

Sometimes I think "internet journalism" is an oxymoron.

Where do they get this stuff?

Manhattan is one of the most overlooked new shows of 2014. There have been so many new dramas (True Detective, The Affair, etc) and Manhattan has to be my favourite. I'm very happy to see it get renewed for a second season.

I would highly recommend watching it to everyone, if for no other reason than to see Harry Lloyd on screen ;)

Just so you know, it's fan hype, not gossip rag hype, and it's a compliment--we're eager for that book! :)

BAFTA should be next if the world was just and decent. Two award shows down though, you must be extremely proud, oh gracious and magnificent Ser. I will certainly be watching, all of course depending on my ongoing custody dispute, and I will be outraged if GoT does not sweep all of the categories. Fantasy is so overlooked indeed, a shame when our favourite genre is ignored time and time again for such peasant fare as The Good Wife and House of Cards, a shameful imitator of the original (and definitive) BBC series.

What is your take on remakes, good Ser...

PS Do you ever believe Wild Cards will be a series, because if so, it would be outstanding to see the Great and Powerful Turtle on the small screen.

12 days of Christmas of Westeros on Twitter?
Hey quick question on your twitter account you are doing a 12 days of Christmas of Westeros. It ends on the 21st could you answer what that is about?

Much as I love Peter, I'm really rooting for Steve Buscemi in the SAG noms - such a very fine actor in so many films, and his work in Boardwalk Empire has been outstanding, every episode. It's past time to acknowledge his talent.

That said, I want GoT to win everything else it's nominated for in SAGs, GGs, Emmys next year (I guess?), etc. etc. etc.

"I remain skeptical about our chances of actually winning, the bias against fantasy being what it is."

My friend and I discussed this some years ago. Although there is a lot of fantasy/sci-fi that I enjoy and find aesthetically well done, I don't often come across a fantasy/sci-fi story (especially a more mainstream one) that regards and criticizes Humankind and its shortcomings in as raw or direct a manner as many of the dramas that end up winning those awards. In fact, the purpose of most of the former seem to be to entertain readers and viewers (which is fine) as opposed to commenting on aspects of being human (whether social or otherwise), which I think makes them less memorable and timeless than stories that do (which, again, seem to be mostly dramas).

A Song of Ice and Fire/"Game of Thrones," I think, does a much better job of addressing issues in society as well as Humankind's shortcomings than most fantasy/sci-fi stories. The characters feel much more real (especially Tyrion and the Hound) and the situations and outcomes more desperate. Many dislike the Red Wedding sequence, but it is one of my favorite scenes simply because it shows that, like in real life, no one is safe from others' greed and ambition--no one is safe from unwittingly becoming a pawn in others' games--no one is safe from being used as a means to an end.

Even if "Game of Thrones" doesn't win (this time ;D), I think a lot can be said for the ground that it's broken for fantasy/sci-fi stories. If nothing else, it shows what the genre is capable of so that those stories are taken more seriously in the future.

Anyway, sorry for the long comment. ^^; I'll be cheering for "Game of Thrones" and Peter (although I confess that I'll be cheering for Steve as well xD). Best of luck! :D

Was really pleased and surprised to see GoT get a GG nomination for Best Drama. Honestly thought it would be overlooked with it being fantasy. Definitely a cause for celebration! Hopefully going home with some awards!

Award Season!!!! Plus a recommendation for "The Missing"
Well congratulations to the cast and the crew for their wonderful work on behalf of all us fan! I"lol keep my fingers crossed!

Also, dear air, Mr. Martin I would highly recommend for you to watch the new mini-series called "The Missing"! If you want to see a slow-burning drama, a brilliant cast and an excellent bit of acting, I highly recommend "The Missing".... In the us it currently airs on Starz and in the the UK on the BBC.

I usually once every week or 2 catch up on you not a blog, when I scrolled up and only had half this picture I oddly thought it was a statue of a mans privates (the shaft) and was like wtf is going on, did grrm get a woody or something? But I think I would of heard of such a well written porno.

Congrats on more nominations. Game of thrones is hands down the best show on television. Theirs other good ones, but none are anywhere near as deep or imaginative as game of thrones. Hoping you guys win.
