And Speaking of Subterranean...

... I am pleased to be able to announce that they have just signed up artist Marc Fishman to illustrate their deluxe limited edition of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS.

Don't know Fishman's work? Go to http://www.marcfishman.com/ and check it out. He's amazing, and it will be a real thrill to work with him.

I've actually had a Fishman cover once before. His painting "The Return of the King" (which can be seen on the website) was used by my German publishers as the cover for one of their volumes of A FEAST FOR CROWS. A gorgeous painting... but of course it has nothing to do with my books, Goldmann just plucked it out of their Big Box o' Fantasy Covers and decided it was close enough. It's the best of the covers I've gotten on my German paperbacks, beyond a doubt, but all the same I'm jazzed to know that this time Marc will actually be painting the characters, scenes, and settings from my book.

If you'd like to get in the queue to snag a copy of the illustrated DANCE, it is never too late to drop by the SubPress website and place your order.

I dunno. The central figure in "The Return of the King" looks just _like_ Tommen... except for the beard, the hair color, about three feet in height, and his sigil. Aside from that, the resemblance is quite striking.

Oh. Yeah. Dead Ringer. Give or take a few years.

That said, did you check out "Night" on page 4? AMAZING. I'm in love.

Erm, doesn't there have to be an edition of Dance in order for them to publish a limited version of it?

Or are you just being coy? Odd, for that doesn't jibe with the GRRM I saw at WFC in Saratoga last year :-)

I noticed this, too. I can only assume that it hasn't been listed yet.

Speaking of the Deluxe Limited Edition Dance, has anyone else seen the front cover for DANCE? I don't know whether this is legit or fake, so I won't confirm anything, but Wikipedia has uploaded a cover for the novel.

Release Dage?
Well, the source for the image on Wikipedia is listed as the Amazon page for the book, and on that page, there is a RELEASE DATE listed. That is, if you are to trust Amazon. The supposed release date is September 30 of this year. Supposedly. Amazon also claims that the book is 1008 pages. Go look at the page for yourself: http://www.amazon.com/Dance-Dragons-George-R-R-Martin/dp/0553801473/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203737182&sr=8-1
I would be deeply hurt if Amazon had accurate information about the release of this book before we, George's loyal fans, did.

I've always wondered what happens to the cover paintings. Do they give them to the author? Does the painter keep them? Can't wait to see it though.

Re: sooo...
No. As I have said before, when DANCE is done, I will post the news on my Update page.

I am trying to finish by the middle of June, however. These announcements are predicated on me being able to do that.

If I do not, in fact, deliver the finished before before the end of June, all bets are off.

And Amazon pub dates are almost always made of hope and vapor.

ordering the limited
Go to the Subterranean Press website at http://www.subterraneanpress.com/

You may only be able to get on a waiting list. First priority for buying the limited of DANCE goes to those who have purchased the previous limiteds from SubPress, and it may be possible that all copies are committed.

There are always cancellations and dropouts, however. If so, the earlier you get your name on the waiting list, the better.

Ooh, I can't wait to see the finished product! Good cover art is kinda hard to come by sometimes--it's rare to see an artist's interpretation of characters that ultimately results in art actually looking like the characters. I keep thinking of Darrell Sweet's covers for Jordan's "The Wheel of Time" series. Somehow, Sweet always manages to make Rand and his friends look about 40 years old. Looking at your cover gallery, I have to be honest and say that some of the covers for your books around the world either inaccurately depict certain characters (like the dragons being huge or Jon Snow looking to be about 30) and events, or else don't appear to have anything to do with the series. I have to wonder how many artists actually -read- the character descriptions before working on a cover--or if they do, then I have to wonder what exactly they're reading and who is providing them with such skewed descriptions. I'm not familiar with the publishing process, so all I can do is wonder. Over the years, I have found that I prefer plain covers to cover art, but on the rare occasions that a cover is accurate and well-drawn, then it's truly an amazing experience. Marc Fishman is definitely one of those exceptional artists, and I hope he'll be able to accurately interpret your literary vision.

How fast can this Marc guy paint I wonder?!
I hope he can paint faster than some authors can write!.. (Of course I consider it an achievement to READ an entire book -- let alone write one!)
