I Call It Craven

The cowardice is contagious, it would appear.

In the comments to my last post, several of my readers suggested that we follow the lead of the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin and show TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE at the Cocteau, since Sony has wimped out and pulled THE INTERVIEW.

It sounded like a great idea, so we took immediate steps to do so.

Only to learn that Paramount has now decided to withdraw TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE from exhibition.   We won't be allowed to show the film, and neither will Alamo, nor any of the other independent venues that wanted to use TA:WP to replace THE INTERVIEW.

 http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/moviesnow/la-et-mn-team-america-to-screen-in-place-of-the-interview-at-texas-theater-20141218-story.html

Regal.  AMC.  Cinemark.  Sony.  And now Paramount.  Where does it end?

I guess I should contact our new North Korean masters to ask them what movies we will be allowed to show at the Cocteau.

Do it anyway.
Go get the DVD, put it on a projector, and do it anyway. Bugger them.

Re: Do it anyway.
This! And I'd go further--make it a charity event as a marathon of anti-dictator comedy films--start with Der Fuhrer's Face, then show To Be or Not to Be (1942 version, even if the Mel Brooks version is funnier), then maybe the South Park "Cartoon Wars" 2 parter, and finish with Team America. If Paramount threatens to sue, tell them they're welcome to try and reap all the awful publicity. And suggest that maybe if they had the guts to stand up to North Korea instead of bullying independent theaters, this wouldn't have happened.

Team America: World Police? ONG! Several people read my mind! I love it. Pity Paramount is rolling over like a little bitch. Damn, must buy the DVD now before THAT gets pulled too. Great thought, pity the boardroom is bending over to that lift-wearing punk with the penis-head shaped haircut.

I can understand Sony pulling The Interview after the major chains decline to show it. File it as a possible financial motive and ignore it. Fine. Paramount pulling Team America and the new Steve Carell thriller set in Korea being cancelled as it's being filmed reach new lows in cowardice.

Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator, then?

If there's any gleam of hope in this whole sordid affair, it's knowing that Parker and Stone will without question have Kim Jong Un (and presumably Paramount and Sony executives, considering that Parker and Stone have little problem biting the hand that feeds them) suffer unimaginable indignities before meeting an untimely demise in an upcoming episode of South Park.

While this is outrageous and disgraceful, do you, however, believe that some topics or individuals should be exempt from mockery or comical portrayals of any sort?

No, I don't.

I have been mocked myself, on SOUTH PARK most notably. Did I love it? Not especially. (Haven't actually watched it yet, to tell the truth. I've joked about the whole they getting the whole 'weenie' thing wrong, when it should have been 'boobies.') But it's the price of being famous, and living in a free society.

It's our RIGHT to mock whoever we want to mock.

If some North Korean filmmaker wants to make a movie about President Obama being sodomized by George W. Bush, they have that right too. I hope we would not threaten to bomb their movie theatres to stop it from being shown.

Dear Sony, Paramount, et al,

This is what it means to live in fear. They have won. They have changed our way of life and YOU are to blame. You have cost us our freedom of speech and expression, our most cherished right. Don't you realize that giving in to terrorists only emboldens them? Where will we draw the line as their demands become increasingly more radical? By withdrawing this film you have caved in to a vulgar threat. When I think of all the lives lost, all of the blood shed to secure our freedom, I could weep at the shame you brought on us today. It is a base betrayal and I hope you quickly reverse course, or suffer dearly for your cowardice.

It does not end. The Western nations are in moral, fiscal & psychological collapse. This is but a symptom of the greater disorder that plagues the West.

Glad to see you post about this.
Hi Mr. Martin, long time fan. Glad to see you take a stand on this issue. I think a lot of people go back and forth on this... I understand people's want to not risk human lives over a film, but we also can't cower to threats like this. It will only bring future ultimatums.

Keep fighting the good fight!

Ps. Thanks for the coin! If I'm ever in Bravos... :)
