Coaching Fiasco?

So now the rumor mill tells us that the leading candidate for the Jets' head coaching job is Doug Marrone, who just stepped down as coach of the Buffalo Bills, where we won... how many SuperBowls was it?  Oh.  Zero.  Well, how many playoff appearances?  Oh.  Zero.

Having dumped Rex, one of the best coaches in the NFL, will Gang Green reach out for mediocrity?

These are the Jets.  Maybe they will be smart this time around.  (Hah)

Re: Poor Jets...
They should have taken a shot at hiring Harbaugh.

Btw, your posts about NFL made me start watching it.
So...besides ASOIAF, thanks for that!

Cheers from Brazil.

Jets Coaching
There's just not many top-flight Coaches out there to choose from George.. Dan Quinn(Def Coord of Seahawks) and Todd Bowles (Def Coord of Cards)are worth looks.. My team is all set with Coaching, we have Belichick. Go Pats!

What are your thoughts on Harvin
As a Seahawks fan, I'm curious what you think of Harvin. Sure loved watching him play. Wish it could have worked out for us...

Going 9-7 or 8-8 in Buffalo is a pretty big achievement these days...

Get a Grip
Rex took a really good Jets team and has made them worse each year. Don't blame the quarterbacks. HE picked Sanchez, HE picked Geno, HE brought in Vick, and none of them has worked out. Rex is the one wasting first round draft picks on these guys.

Rex is a great guy and has a much better personality than Bill B and other guys, but he's a D-Coordinator at best. He CLEARLY doesn't know how to work an offense.

Marrone just gave Buffalo their first winning season in 10 years! The Bills had finished 4th in your division for 6 years in a row.

Re: Get a Grip
None of that is true. Rex was the coach, not the GM. Mike Tannenbaum drafter Sanchez, and Idzik is responsible for drafting Geno Smith and signing Mike Vick.

Rex worked miracles with what he was given.

Will you be watching the post season, even without your teams playing? If so, who will you be rooting for?

At least you'll get a new GM
The Jets were not going anywhere with Idzik, though I agree with you about Ryan. Possibly it was a metaphoric next chapter thing for the franchise, but I don't think it was the right move.

Now and then I think Jets fans are justified in bemoaning their fate. Then I remember, I'm a Vikings fan. At least your team won a freaking Super Bowl.

a revamp for the Jets.....
I cn really feel your pain. As a Ravens fan I've pretty much have to watch the team go from folly to outright breaking apart (especially after the Rice scandal. Although I really blame the NFL and the foolhardy commissioner for that).

This just reminds me of when Mark Sanchez went to the Jets those years ago and they began showing a lot of promise. He then became a bit lackluster (and then overshadowed by Aaron Rodgers but that's a different story) and the Jets devolved into what they are now.

The only consolation I can possibly give is that at least a new coach may possibly bring some new life into the team???

Also just curious, but why are you not a Bills fan? I usually find myself rooting for the Giants/Bills....and at least the Bills actually play in NY haha.

Well, at least John Idzik got fired, so the next coach will probably have a little better talent next season. Of course, the Jets being the Jets, Woody Johnson could just replace Idzik with someone just as bad.

Doug Marrone
I am thoroughly convinced more than ever that there are two truisms in sports: 1) you cannot win in the NBA without a 'superstar' and 2) you cannot win in the NFL without a quarterback.

Marrone is a good coach, and he took the Bills to a fairly respectable place this year. But, he was saddled with a terrible quarterback situation (partly of his own creation with E.J. Manuel). If he takes over the Jets (or anyone for that matter), you still need a quarterback. Anyone coming into the Jets is going to do the same or slightly worse job as Rex because they don't have a quarterback. My belief is that they will do worse, because Rex is a superlative defense coach.

My hope beyond all hope is that we've seen the last of these "read option/running" quarterbacks. With one glaring exception in Seattle (and watch what happens when Beastmode isn't there anymore to see how the read option works), this doesn't work in the NFL. The Manuels, Geno Smiths, Johnny Manziel, Vince Young, etc., of the world should go to Canada where they belong. I want to watch "Pro" football, not a glorified college offensive scheme where you just put the ball in your hands of the best athlete and hope for the best.

As a Cowboys fan, I have better hopes for your Giants next year than you do. I will tell you that the NFL is better when the NFC East is competitive from top to bottom. Coughlin is a good coach. He'll fix the lines on both sides of the ball, and you'll be in the playoffs next year (especially with a 3rd place schedule).

Just hope you don't pick up Trestman. The last couple of years in Chicago have been downright painful and a textbook example of total wasted potential - I really can't remember any team with so much potential that did so little with it, and that's coming from a Cubs fan.

I'm actually hoping the Bears pick up Rex, given his father's history with the club. But since the Bears are replacing their GM first (as well they should), Rex will probably get picked up by someone else before that. Ah well, to dream of what could be.

Best Jets coaching candidate
Forget Marrone. Funny that the other user said "Go Broncos" because I think Jack Del Rio is the guy that ANYONE should pick up. He worked wonders with the Broncos D (Why is their OC receiving any look at all?) and did a much better job than people realize in Jacksonville. Start praying for Jack... plus a candidate off the Packers or Ravens GM tree.

Bills fan perspective
As a Bills fan I can sympathize with you George. I'm happy he's gone. It seems that he left for a cash grab and the Jets job. He's prickly and reports say he was disgruntled with the Buffalo media. I don't know how he expects that to get any better in New York!

He's also a former offensive lineman and line coach, yet the Bills worst position this year was their line. They actually got adequate quarterbacking this year but their line was so bad that their running game took a huge step back. With better running, they would be playing this weekend.

As a Bills fan, I hope you get him. I like it when the Jets are a mess. Nothing personal.
