Best Books of the Year

Another year has come and gone, and all sorts of folks are putting out lists of their favorite books of 2014...

... including the editors at Amazon.

I am pleased to say that our Westerosi worldbook THE WORLD OF ICE & FIRE and our anthology ROGUES both made the Top Twenty list in Science Fiction and Fantasy:

Thanks, Amazon.  And thanks to all of you, my readers.  Hope you enjoyed the books as well.

I need to pick up the anthology, going through Dreamsongs now. The Sandkings is great, same with the one where the guy's stationed on pluto and opens the vortex for a living, also great.

Sci-Fi and Fantasy melded just right.

They both are great. But hell - our SF & F world is in a really bad shape if both of them had made top twenty :(

Thank you for posting this George. I somehow forgot about ROGUES. Between PC games, writing my own novel, and my large list of Ebooks I have not read and new comics to catch up on. It simply fell through the cracks.
I'll be picking up ROGUES right after this comment. Also, allow me to put this rumor to rest. Fictional characters - even in the Marvel Universe. Do read your books.

Love the world of Ice & Fire book!
Not only does the book help to flesh out an already vibrant world and history, it is written in a way as to make it very entertaining (Love the testimony of Mushroom excerpts). Excellent illustrations along with a very nice lineage chart for the great houses makes this a must have for any true Game of Thrones fan.

P.S. - Eagerly, albeit patiently, awaiting the next installment in the Ice & Fire series :)

Thanks George & Co for such an amazing piece of work. The art, the stories all of it was top quality stuff. I love history , fake and real so reading it was completely compelling. And you defiantly were right when you said that it had lots and lots to do with the Andals and the First men! Also the Rouges anthology was awesome. I eagerly and patiently await the arrival of winds of winter and I'm sure it will be as of the same, if not better, quality of the series has delivered thus far!

Have you had the chance to read any of the books on the list, other than your own ? Do you recommend any of them ?

And while on topic (sort of), can you recommend any books that are similar to ASOIAF - for us fans who are patiently waiting for TWOW ?

Thanks! and have a wonderful year :)

I was given The World of Ice and Fire for my birthday. It's gorgeous! And huge, too, so it's going to take me awhile to get through it. But what a way to spend time.

Great news!

Hope you had great holidays, and 2015 is looking good for you thus far.

I's super early, but I checked some web sites for 'pre orders' under your name and Old Venus and 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' is coming out this year - looking forward to more surprises. In addition to Son of Kong (I mean, that's a given) I'm looking forward to the graphic novel versions of Windhaven and The Mystery Knight, whenever those will release.

The Way Of Kings
Have you read "The Way Of Kings" by Brandon Sanderson? it is the first book in Sanderson's new fantasy epic which is planned to be even longer then ASOIF with ten novels! The second book in the series was just recently published.

The World of Ice and Fire
I bought The World of Ice and Fire last week, have been reading it very night, and have just about reached the chapter on Robert's rebellion. It's fascinating reading, but a very different experience from the novels themselves, being written in an appropriately factual style, and requiring far more concentration from the reader just to keep up - rather like a true history book in fact, and I wouldn't like to take an exam on it. The fact that so many readers are hungry for this kind of book is, of course, testimony to the amazing depth of this world we love being immersed in. From almost anyone else, phrases like 'shameless cash-in' and 'showing off' would spring to mind, but with quality like this, I think we could forgive George for employing an agent from the firm of Littlefinger & Lannister.

Terrific Companion Book for a Terrific Series
Dear GRRM,

I congratulate you on having two books reach the top twenty list of Amazon's Sci-fi and Fantasy books of 2014.

I would also like to thank you for putting so much hard work and effort into the making of The World of Ice and Fire, with such great detail, filled with the much and more of the rich history of Westeros that, until now, we have only seen faint glimpses of throughout your novels. I, like so many others, am anxiously awaiting the next installment, The Winds of Winter, and for the time being this makes a great hold-me-over.

I know that a tremendous amount of fan pressure is put on you to finish your next novel as quick as possible(with all ridiculous rumors flying every which way but true), but as a true fan, and writer, I would prefer that you take as much time as is needed to make certain that every character's arc is well thought out and well written, as has always been your style. Not many people truly appreciate the amount of time that it requires to put so much accurate detail into a work, and as they say, "the devil is in the details", it is those precious details that give your characters, and your world(I could say "our world" because many of us feel as though we are living it right alongside Tyrion, Arya, and so many other of our beloved characters) a feeling of truth and realism that is very difficult to attain.

You are a constant inspiration to an aspiring writer such as myself, and from what I've read about you, a true fan of all forms of art. Congratulations as well on the purchase of your new "bowling alley". I hope that once it is open I can find the time to plan a trip to Santa Fe to visit it.

I know I speak for your entire fandom when I say, thank you for all the wonder that you have given us and that you will continue to give us.

A fan

TWOIAF is fantastic
I don't usually ask for books for Christmas. I move often, and lugging anything around is a pain. And even though I have a big, big move on the horizon where I'll be ditching a lot of my stuff, furniture, and whittling it down to what can fit in a backpack -- I wanted this book. It made my Christmas and I've been diving into it ever since. Thank you, George, for creating such a fantastic world to explore.

I also got The World of Ice and Fire for Christmas. It's great, I love the art work and it deserves a place on those lists. Kudos.
