Dunk & Egg Ride Again

Circle October 6 on your calendar.

My friends at Bantam have just informed me that will be the day that A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS in released in English, collecting all three of my "Dunk & Egg" novellas -- "The Hedge Knight," "The Sworn Sword," and "The Mystery Knight" -- between one set of covers for the first time.

AKo7K comps 18 high

Many of you, of course, will have read the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg in their original appearances in LEGENDS, LEGENDS II, and WARRIORS. But A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS will have a lot more than the three stories. We wanted this to be an illustrated book, so we went to the amazing Gary Gianni and asked him to do some art for us, thinking perhaps we could include seven or eight interior illustrations. Gary turned us down. He loved the stories, he said, but he'd only do it if he could illustrate the entire book, with art on virtually every page.

We said yes, of course, and Gary has been drawing for the better part of two years. Most fantasy fans know Gianni's artwork from his work on PRINCE VALIANT, on the Wandering Star limited editions of SOLOMON KANE and BRAN MAK MORN, and of course for his stunning 2014 ICE & FIRE calendar, but we think A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS may be his best work to date.

This is going to be an amazing book, one I will be very happy to have my name on -- beside that of Gary Gianni, surely among the very best fantasy artists of all time. (And damn it, folks, it is LONG past time that he was nominated for a Hugo).

The artwork sounds nice, but...
i don't want to own the same story two or three times. I will wait until all the dunk and Egg stories are published individually, and then hopefully in a compilation, and get it then.

same with the Game of Thrones blurays. I will wait for the boxset when the series is done.

plus I have yet to crack Old Mars, Dangerous Women or The World of Ice and Fire, so lots on my plate.

Re: The artwork sounds nice, but...
Considering the size of the novellas, they're not going to be able to collect them all in one book. These three collected by themselves will be the size of one of the novels. The only realistic possible collection with all the future novellas will be a multi-volume collected edition, or of course a massive ebook.

Is there going to be a graphic novel of Mystery Knight?

Well I did finish reading "The Hedge Knight" and "The Sworn Sword" a month ago for the first time, but I didn't get to read "The Mystery Knight" so far. I guess now I'm just going to wait till October to buy all three in one splendid book.
Still in the middle of reading "The World of Ice and Fire" and loving it very much. Thank you for your wonderful work George and take every time you need for the next books. :)

It's 90 years before A Game of Thrones. /pedant

Glad I already have the German version.

Lovely. I have the Solomon Kane and Bran Mak Morn editions with Gianni's illustratiions. Dunk and Egg will fit in just fine with Bran, Kull, Conan, Khlit the Kossack, Hugh of Taranto, Daril ibn Athir, and the whole merry gang of kings, knights, crusaders, steppe riders, and pirates from the worlds of Howard, Lamb and others of that ilk. I've got a whole shelf full of those stories.

Any chance ...
... that you include an appendix in the book, like in the main ASoIaF series, depicting the main characters, and their relations to each other?

No, afraid not.

Brazilian edition
I think maybe the Brazilian edition was the first to put all three "Dunk & Egg" novellas between one set of covers for the first time.

Really pumped
The D&E stories are fantastic. I can't wait for this book to come out as well as all the great artwork inside it.

Is this the kind of hardcover that has a dust jacket or (like the worldbook) the kind without, and will it be in paperback eventually?
Feb. 7th, 2015 06:21 pm (UTC)
Yes, there will eventually be a paperback... but not until at least a year after the hardcover. Maybe longer.

I'll definitely be buying this, but will I ever see a 'The Mystery Knight' graphic novel next to 'The Hedge Knight' and 'The Sworn Sword' on my bookshelf? I can't stand an unfinished series. :(

Oooo, I've been looking forward to this!

When can we expect to read the next series of Dunk and Egg?
Feb. 7th, 2015 04:01 pm (UTC)
Great news.
I loved the 2014 calendar pictures of Ned and Arya and of Tyrion with the crossbow. Looking forward to it.

cool, but...
The illustrations sound great! Can't say that I'm not disappointed that there's no new D&E story here though. That would have sealed the deal as a must have for me. I really enjoy their adventures. More please!
