DANCE Gets Covered

Okay, I may not have a book yet, but I have covers.

Here are the American and British covers for A DANCE WITH DRAGONS.

If I can deliver the book before the end of June, you'll see these in your favorite bookstore sometime this fall.

If I can't, well... you'll still see them eventually, I hope.

Both are wonderful! Your Russian readers are eager to see the books in Russian. The previos are the brilliants of my own fantasy collection and I'm also waiting for this. We've got a great roleplaying game this year in summer...

I think odiedragon put it well; whilst this definitely isn't a criticism of you, George, I loved the old covers; I agree that sometimes an oil painting is not great, but the original UK ones for the first three books are so original and intricate, and get across all the heraldry and such.

I honestly think I could do better than these ones myself, and I don't get paid for design or art...

But its a minor point, the books could be covered in plain brown paper for all I care really...

Woah, that's pretty! I guess being in Europe I will be getting the British version. Sorry, I can't wait for the German translations (besides, the German covers are hideous...)

And "if"? That means that there is the possiblity? :D Oh man, I'd already be satisfied if you got it done within this year, so... you're great, keep on doing your thing :)

All good things come to those who can wait :)

Not Bad
I like the color and overall design of this cover better than a Feast for Crows. But I agree with what some have said here: I prefer the older covers as well.

It's a series about people and thus we should see people on the covers, not generic icons that broadly (and sometimes incorrectly) represent what's inside. The notion that these covers were changed to help cross the genres is silly, since you can only find these books in the SF/Fantasy sections of our bookstores, so who are they trying to kid?

Of course, the content of them is spot on a match, but the covers are a little bland: It's the kind of design an intern can do on his/her summer vacation from Vassar.

Re: Not Bad
I disagree. I, like a great many others, believe that GRRM's writing is outstanding literature and would be widely celebrated as such if it were in any other genre. I think the choice to make an approachable cover design is wise. Sci-fi/Fantasy fans have enough imagination and love for GRRM's writing that they would buy it no matter how it's packaged.

As usual the Brits get the better cover.
We get stuck with "Basic Photoshop Gradients 101" student work again.

Am I the only one who misses the illustrated covers?

I love the American covers, all of my SOAIF books have those covers! (Though I am Canadian, an important distinction.) :^P

I'm British so...
IN YOUR FACE!

Seriously though, we do get the best covers; but we rarely get George over here to sign books and do readings etc :(

I say you Yanks get the better deal, we cant import George at whim.
