Sorry, Saratoga

I don't often attend the World Fantasy Convention (not to be confused with the World Science Fiction Convention, which I have only missed once thirty years), but I was there the last time it was held in Saratoga, and I had a great time. A terrific town, a wonderful con.

This year the convention is returning to Saratoga once again, and I was hoping to return as well. I'm not a guest of honor, and I'm not (so far as I know) getting an award; I just wanted to go.

Reluctantly, however, I've just had to scratch Saratoga off my list of 2015 appearances. For no reason having to do with the con itself. I am sure it will be terrific. It's just a matter of time.

I have too much to do. Too many things on my plate. Son of Kong foremost amongst them.

My apologies to anyone who saw Saratoga on my Appearances page and planned to go in order to see me. I won't be there. Go anyway. You'll have a great time.

Also, I have decided against attending this year's San Diego Comicon. Same reason. But since Comicon was never listed on my Appearances page, scratching it is not as big a deal.

(Should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind).

Son of Kong
This isn't right. The thing that everyone loves most about these books is the quality and care with which they are written. If you're sucking the joy out of your life for sake of writing the book something is bound to suffer. Enjoy the cons!

Re: Son of Kong
Right on. I don't understand the fans rush to the finish line. I'd rather our author finish the works his way. If he needs time, so be it.

Oh, George. This makes me happy.

Re: Power on, George.
Oh the irony of you being happy and George being sad. A story should be made out of this.

Re:changing yourmind about convention attendance
Once you get Winds wrapped, feel free to think of your time as your own.

Should I...
Is finishing TWOW before the two cons a realistic possibility or are you just mentioning it for the sake of completeness?

Hope! With a side of patience.
I'm sorry you're disappointed about missing these events. However you just gave all of us a tremendous amount of hope with your final comment!

You must feel our anticipation and love for your creations. For some of us it has re-shaped our lives and even the way in which we think. Your stories have touched us deeply. Just read the myriad of ASOIAF threads on reddit.com. These cliffhangers have ALL of our panties on a bunch.

Writing about the completion on WoW without it being thrown in your face forcing you to make a comment and talking about WoW completion nonetheless, I am so excited.Thank you George! Must be very close...

Any regrets
Using this specific example, do you sometimes regret the amount of success you've had that makes it hard to do what you would have liked to do ?

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for Twow to come out this year. All hail the Mannis!

Re: Any regrets
There are definite drawbacks to success on this level... well, maybe not success, but rather "fame." Starting out, we all dream of being rich and famous. I have to say, rich is great... but fame is definitely a double-edged sword.

But that is hardly an original observation. Still, when it happens to YOU, it is startling.

Thank you George for your great work!
Im an huge fan of you and your works, from Israel and im truely
Amazed by the way you have managed to create this massive universe, and keep writing
And advancing the plot when there is so many complex elements you need to combine.
How does your method of writing Winds Of Winter looks like?
How do you manage to involve and evolve every character arc in the story? You got so many of them, do you have like notes scattered around your workplace each one contains all the important info about the character?
Anyways, Asoiaf influenced me a lot and everytime i do a reread of the series, i get astounded from the level of comlexity of the series.
Keep doing your best- writing amazing stories, and causing people hooked to your books.
And i think you are going to make it for comicon this year...

Doing my best not to get prematurely excited but.... Thank you for writing that last sentence :)

You, Ser, just made my day. It's a shame about the Cons, but the possibility that TWOW might be done this autumn or even summer is huge! Thank you for this!

Don't tease us like this. We're too desperate for the next book, especially after Mercy.

... as long as you are still coming to Hamburg in June everything is fine with me. I'll be there ;-).

And if any stupid journalist asks you the question to which the usual answer is 'Tyrion' throw out a 'Runcel Hightower' or 'Septon Murmison'. That should be fun.
