Sorry, Saratoga

I don't often attend the World Fantasy Convention (not to be confused with the World Science Fiction Convention, which I have only missed once thirty years), but I was there the last time it was held in Saratoga, and I had a great time. A terrific town, a wonderful con.

This year the convention is returning to Saratoga once again, and I was hoping to return as well. I'm not a guest of honor, and I'm not (so far as I know) getting an award; I just wanted to go.

Reluctantly, however, I've just had to scratch Saratoga off my list of 2015 appearances. For no reason having to do with the con itself. I am sure it will be terrific. It's just a matter of time.

I have too much to do. Too many things on my plate. Son of Kong foremost amongst them.

My apologies to anyone who saw Saratoga on my Appearances page and planned to go in order to see me. I won't be there. Go anyway. You'll have a great time.

Also, I have decided against attending this year's San Diego Comicon. Same reason. But since Comicon was never listed on my Appearances page, scratching it is not as big a deal.

(Should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind).

Don't be sad!!
Imagine the relief once TWOW is done and everyone clamoring over it every day can finally STFU for awhile. Until they're finished and you start getting hounded over ADOS.

But still.

And also, this post livened up a massive dump of a day for me, so thanks for that.

You should go and have a great time
You deserve some down time for yourself to do things that you enjoy. You will never not be busy so you might as well go. Please don't be sad. You are the best at your craft and I thank you for everything. :)

Thank you.
>(Should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind).

Please, no. We enjoy the wait for TWOW. It has been teaching us some valuable skills in life like, patience and the will to not go insane.

But seriously, I love you. Thank you for the sentence ALONE. Can you tell us if the book is actually edited as you're writing it, or will the editing process start after the writing has completely finished?

Sorry that you have to miss your fans...
But seriously Mr. Martin, I did not expect you to say this.

"(Should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind)" Is that a hint that son of kong nears completion? I know you won't say a thing, but hey, a guy can dream (of spring) can't he?

I'm sorry you are having to sacrifice your freedom, but you will feel so much better once you complete your "to-do list"! :) I would love to attend more cons myself.
Thank you for all the lovely, life enhancing novels you have gifted us! Your sacrifices and hard work do not go unnoticed.
You've made my world a more colorful place.
Respect & blessings,

Do we have permission to take the fact that you consider it even possible to have Son of Kong off your back by ComicCon as a good sign?

Sad to see you miss something you obviously love doing
I'm sure many of the con-goers feel like Lloyd Christmas right now. In his own words "so you're saying there's a chance?"

George you are such a tease! ;-)

*tries to not read too much into George even suggesting that there might be a remote possibility that the TWoW manuscript might be finished before Comicon*

All jokes aside, just curious George, how does your experience of going to cons compare to 15 or even 5 or 6 years ago, just a bit before the show started? Do you miss being "just another" fan/ author, wandering around from booth to booth while occasionally getting recognised, now that the immense popularity of the show has made that more or less impossible (barring some sort of disguise)?

Yes, I do miss that. Especially at San Diego Comicon, where once upon a time I could wander the floor freely, enjoying the booths and buying old comic books.

Comicon has gotten incredibly intense. I need security there now, and sometimes even that is not enough.

Traditional SF cons are much better than media cons, which is why I still go to worldcon, and enjoy small regional cons. But even those are getting more difficult to enjoy these past few years.

Current Mood
I am of the group of people that fiendishly check every day for updates on WINDS OF WINTER's release date but this particular post has given me a wake up call. I think people like to forget that you are a person too who enjoys doing normal things just like everyone else.

Thank you for keeping us updated on your appearances schedule, I know we all love to stay informed. But I truly do hope that your next post will feature a more jubilant "Current Mood". The "sad" alien really is quite expressive; more so than the other icons. But it is a reminder that ASOIAF isn't life.

George, you're clearly sacrificing things you enjoy about your personal life just to satisfy the fans. We appreciate it! I promise.

Sacrifice is never easy, or it is not a true sacrifice :) Thanks George for all you do!

It stinks that you can't go to these cons, but that's life I guess :/. Sounds like you're making good progress on Winds, let's keep this going! Thanks for all the great stories, and let's make sure you get another HUGO next year ;).

Severely disappointed in the lack of description on the contents of your plate
I'd like to amend the post. Something like this,

"I have too much to do. Too many things on my plate. Suckling pig, pigeon pie, turnips soaking in butter, and honeycombs. A thick soup of barley and venison; salads of sweetgrass and spinach and plums sprinkled with crushed nuts; snails in honey and garlic. Great joints of aurochs roasted with leeks; venison pies chunky with carrots, bacon, and mushrooms. Yet, foremost amongst them, was the Son of Kong, swimming in butter."

change your mood - don't be sad
You're talented, rich, famous, doing what you love ... turn that frown upside down, mister

You have a valid point.
