Sorry, Saratoga

I don't often attend the World Fantasy Convention (not to be confused with the World Science Fiction Convention, which I have only missed once thirty years), but I was there the last time it was held in Saratoga, and I had a great time. A terrific town, a wonderful con.

This year the convention is returning to Saratoga once again, and I was hoping to return as well. I'm not a guest of honor, and I'm not (so far as I know) getting an award; I just wanted to go.

Reluctantly, however, I've just had to scratch Saratoga off my list of 2015 appearances. For no reason having to do with the con itself. I am sure it will be terrific. It's just a matter of time.

I have too much to do. Too many things on my plate. Son of Kong foremost amongst them.

My apologies to anyone who saw Saratoga on my Appearances page and planned to go in order to see me. I won't be there. Go anyway. You'll have a great time.

Also, I have decided against attending this year's San Diego Comicon. Same reason. But since Comicon was never listed on my Appearances page, scratching it is not as big a deal.

(Should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind).

Son of Kong
Don't be sad, George, enjoy the birthing of your very own son of kong!

I'm looking forward to you showing up at the cons and being tortuously vague about whether you just decided to go or had indeed put the last . on The Winds Of Winter.

Side note: It's hard to express how big of an impact a series of novels and stories can have on ones life in a blog comment. I'll save it for another time.

Honestly the wait isn't so bad, because hopefully the more work you put in to this book the less you'll have to do for the final one. It'll all be downhill after you've finished tying up old knots. And presumably, like ADWD, some chapters will be moved around etc. The last wait will be the shortest, I bet, since you already know how you want it to end and have likely been waiting years to write those scenes. But like any trip the packing and driving and plane ride suck but when you get to your destination it was allll worth it.

Oh hey I was wondering- have you ever played Fantasy Flight Games' card game for asoiaf? It's pretty fun and they're debuting the new edition at Gencon in August. If your lent ends and you're allowed to go to cons by then you should check it out! It's in indianapolis and there are tons of games (board games, card games, etc.) If you've never been that'd be a good time to go since they'd probably welcome you as a special guest just for the tie in with their game release. I play the current edition and it's really fun, but it's funny when people haven't even read the books and have no idea who is who. And there are great tie ins, like the Martells gain power by losing challenges, and the Mad King can't be killed unless the enemy controls a noble character... or Jaime.

Anyway I like to think you sit around playing cards with your own characters, since you have that great miniature collection.

Good luck writing!

Writing tips
Hey George! I'm a huge fan of your work and your books are a great source of inspiration for me.

I am currently attempting to write fiction and I wanted to ask- how do you manage to overcome writer's block and write everyday, considering how busy you are?

Bright side? 170 days until Football is back!!! Although you're a giants fan so that's not always a bright side. They can't lose if they're not playing.

George, you don't have to (and obviously won't) confirm the fact you're almost finished with TWOW, but it's quite clear consdering the fact you're deciding whether or not to write a script for Season 6 of the show.

Guess my quetion is: shouldn't this be a reason for you to celebrate?

Premature celebration is always a bad idea.

This is the type of question you used to answer in fan mail, I know, but right now I imagine it is impossible to keep up with your inbox.

In the novels we get the numbers they have during that specific war and in the short stories we get numbers from previous wars, but people like Robb and Edmure didn't have enough time to raise their full strength.

Could you give us a rough number of the army sizes from each region if they had the time to raise as many soldiers as possible?

take your time
Keep up the good work and take all the time you need. We will all be here to catch Son of Kong once you've killed him.

Question about warfare
Will we know the military strenght of the Seven Kingdoms in The Winds of Winter? How many soldiers each region can muster if maxed out, etc?

Don't rush!
Although I also have a life in school, writing is hard. In three years I've done the same three hundred pages of my novel several times. Don't rush, ser. Take your time; you'll have more freedom in coming up with badass quotes for Tyrion.

You'll be sorely missed on the cons!
I am reading between the lines that you'd like to finish the book before the start of season 6... Meanwhile have you given any thought to what you will do once you finish the last line of the series? A year full of conventions perhaps? A trip to space with Conleth Hill? A year on a desert island with Parris and minions? Starting a campaign to buy the brooklyn nets and rename them the Dunkin' Eggs? Or buy the jets and rename them the white walkers?

Do what you want to do, Mr. Martin. The larger part of your fans are really fans, for us the date of release isn't so much important compared to the quality of the book. We can wait, the life is much more important.
And thank's for your wonderful books.

Comic-con booths
Hey george,
what are the things you look for/attend at Comic-con?

Re: Comic-con booths
In recent years the only thing I have really been able to enjoy at comicon is seeing my old friends and spending some time with them.

The public events are just too big and overwhelming, and the parties are too crowded and noisy for me. I meet some great people at the parties, but I hate having to scream in their ears to be heard over the music.

Harbourfront Literaturfestival Hamburg 21.06.2015
Hi George,
I just saw that you will visit my hometown Hamburg, Germany on June 21st and immediately bought tickets for me and 2 friends of mine. Will there be a booksigning after your reading? In that case I would bring my brand new german translation of a World of Ice and Fire with me. Anyways I hope, you will enjoy your time in my beautiful hometown!
Thx for your answer.

Do whatever makes you happy!
I've enjoyed your books so much over the years (I never thought anyone could replace Tolkien as my fave...) that, much as I'm itching to find out what happens in (according to my wife) an almost obsessive way, you should take your time and if that means going to cons, do it!

You're a legend whatever happens
