Sorry, Saratoga

I don't often attend the World Fantasy Convention (not to be confused with the World Science Fiction Convention, which I have only missed once thirty years), but I was there the last time it was held in Saratoga, and I had a great time. A terrific town, a wonderful con.

This year the convention is returning to Saratoga once again, and I was hoping to return as well. I'm not a guest of honor, and I'm not (so far as I know) getting an award; I just wanted to go.

Reluctantly, however, I've just had to scratch Saratoga off my list of 2015 appearances. For no reason having to do with the con itself. I am sure it will be terrific. It's just a matter of time.

I have too much to do. Too many things on my plate. Son of Kong foremost amongst them.

My apologies to anyone who saw Saratoga on my Appearances page and planned to go in order to see me. I won't be there. Go anyway. You'll have a great time.

Also, I have decided against attending this year's San Diego Comicon. Same reason. But since Comicon was never listed on my Appearances page, scratching it is not as big a deal.

(Should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind).

I do hope it's going well George - and hpefully you'll be able to make some of the Cons after all.

I do have a question in regards to writing and the upcoming book:

I recall that in the past some content had to be moved and shuffled a bit (from 'Dance' to 'Winds', and maybe elsewhere.) Is everything 'fitting' so far, or do you forsee anything that may have to be bumped from 'Winds' to 'Dream'? i'm not asking *what it is*, just *if* there is. Hopefully that's a question you can answer.

I hope it gets well, and don't let the nay-sayers, or even the show (as great as it is) bear you down or doubt yourself, or anything else that's negative.

Any thoughts on VR and how it will influence high fantasy story telling on the near future? Any plans on an adaptation of Westeros and Essos for virtual reality?

As I said on here before, can't WAIT to nominate The Winds of Winter for the Hugo next year!

And at this point, I bet you could throw your own Comic Con in New Mexico, force everyone to come to you. Might be pretty sweet.

Never enough time
Time is the enemy of all artists. I'm a painter myself and I always have about 1000 new painting ideas floating around in my head and a million shows I want to go see. Unfortunately, there is never enough time to do it all and to get everything in my head down on canvas. Time sucks.

Still, glad to hear that things are humming along for you. Song of Kong may be the monkey on your back at the moment, but I'm sure you will feel an enormous sense of accomplishment once the final edit is sent off and all your fans can start enjoying the fruits of your labor.

One artist to another, you have been a real inspiration!

P.S. When ASoIaF is complete, would you ever consider writing a script for one of the new stand alone Star Wars movies? It would be interesting to see your take on that universe.

As much as I would love to see TWOW this year, it shouldn't be at the expense of your life and pursuits of happiness.

Cons v. Writing
For very selfish reasons, I'm treating this post as good news. There is only one thing I enjoy more than meeting Mr. Martin at Cons and talking about medieval history, books that have stuck with us over life, Marvel comics, thoughts on the writing craft and Westeros and that's reading his books.

(Also proving wrong all those "he'll never finish and its all up to HBO now" naysayers totally WRONG is going to be fun.)

I'm also glad that creativity still has a payoff (bit threatened by Internet where creative work is taken as free as long as you pay for the site's commercials - not a sustainable model.)

A Winter Wind is Coming.

(And them back to the Cons - truely sorry that the fan(atics) won't let you enjoy a public stroll through the Con.

I just hate hearing that you are sad and you will be missing some of the events that you enjoy. Happy to hear that you are doing this for your fans sake and working so hard on the Winds of Winter. I hope you still get enjoyment while you are writing the books and that it has not just turned into a labor for you. The books bring so much joy (and grief, ugh!) to so many people. Just remember that us fans are Team George! We will root for you weather you are working hard or playing hard!

I was thinking about how you said you missed being able to stroll thru the cons without being noticed. Maybe you could learn a lesson from Varys! Dress like a Dothraki, dye your hair and hang some bells in the beard! Although, people would recognize your voice...maybe pull a Durst and pretend to be mute! Tons of people walk around there with costumes...you could blend right in! Tell your bodyguards to follow suit...whistleblowers.

Well I hope us fans make you laugh or feel better. God only knows what could happen to the Starks should you remain sad.

It's not that I don't want you to have a great time, but I really like to read.

If you don't have a preferred term for the scrutiny your posts (or failures to post) now inspire, how does "Grrmlinology" strike you?
Mar. 17th, 2015 07:32 pm (UTC)
I admire you for putting the writing process first. My suggestion is, get the book written and go to the con the following year when you can have a bit of a breather! No true fan would begrudge you that.

Don't hurry
I'd love a new book. However most of your fans have become pretty good at waiting while anticipating the next part of your awesome story.

If you wanna make us happy, maybe make a comment or two at reddit.com/r/asoiaf?^^

The End
Hi, George.

It is known that D&D know (partially) the ending of ICE & FIRE. Do you know if they will adapt that ending to the small screen or it will slightly different (at least)? (I'd prefer that they don't if the books were released later.)

If you finish WoW
George, I know that this will probably not be read or answered by you, but it's worth a shot. When you finish TWOW, will you do a booktour and maybe visit Sweden? This is the country where Elio and Linda lives, afterall. :D

Re: If you finish WoW
I will visit Sweden -- very briefly -- this summer, on the same trip that takes me to Germany and Finland.
