Sorry, Saratoga

I don't often attend the World Fantasy Convention (not to be confused with the World Science Fiction Convention, which I have only missed once thirty years), but I was there the last time it was held in Saratoga, and I had a great time. A terrific town, a wonderful con.

This year the convention is returning to Saratoga once again, and I was hoping to return as well. I'm not a guest of honor, and I'm not (so far as I know) getting an award; I just wanted to go.

Reluctantly, however, I've just had to scratch Saratoga off my list of 2015 appearances. For no reason having to do with the con itself. I am sure it will be terrific. It's just a matter of time.

I have too much to do. Too many things on my plate. Son of Kong foremost amongst them.

My apologies to anyone who saw Saratoga on my Appearances page and planned to go in order to see me. I won't be there. Go anyway. You'll have a great time.

Also, I have decided against attending this year's San Diego Comicon. Same reason. But since Comicon was never listed on my Appearances page, scratching it is not as big a deal.

(Should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind).

Oh The Times They Are A Changing!
It is interesting 30 years ago when I first started visiting the Con circuit and my favorite SF authors were accessible and you could enjoy the wait for new stories and that was the only way to get information. Now every fan has instant access to every move and every word on the internet and the media feeds on this. So every move George makes and every blog is scrutinized to the Nth degree online and in the news. Popularity aside, my gosh Poor George fighting against the Tide of the internet has to be exhausting all by itself, but it must also suck that you can't enjoy the Cons either.

Saratoga Springs is my hometown! We'll definitely miss having you, George. Hopefully Kong is off your back by November and you can come by :)

And this is why my FB newsfeed claims that you hinted at finishing Winds of Winter. Business Insider no less.

I know that you will finish it when you finish and you will announce it when you announce it.

I kind of wish the rest of the media wouldn't claim that you are hinting at it when you mention it.

Re: Comic Con 2015
Sorry that you will have to miss comic con this year. Hope you get to enjoy at least some other sort of break that time of year.

We had a great time meeting you last year.

You do you
Big fan here, haven't you been to every Comic-Con since it started? I thought I had read that somewhere. It's sad to hear that you won't be making it, I hope the show isn't stressing you too much on getting the books done.

I'd rather you take 5 years to write WoW if it meant you being happy and the book being good.

Re: You do you
No, not even close. I did attend the very first comicon, in New York City in 1964, but I did attend San Diego until the late 80s. I went to several in a row in the 80s and 90s, and then only infrequently until HBO and Random House started bringing me out.

I have been to many more worldcons than comicons.

Enjoy your life
Hey GRRM.

I have only been a reader since 2011 so I missed all the AFFC/ADOS delays. I just read a bunch of your old update posts you made from 2000 and on. Sounds like it was super stressful and you seemed pretty beat up emotionally in those posts.

I truly hope TWOW is going better for you! You should attend Cons and do things that you enjoy. I'm not a writer, but I know when I get down/frustrated in my personal life, my work suffers. Most people are similar in those regards; so I say go enjoy life and come back with some extra vigor. Don't wear yourself out! A week or two vaca isn't going to kill us fans.

Thank You!
George,

I'm really sorry that you're in this predicament. I can only imagine how much attending these events mean to you. That said, I'm also extremely appreciative that you're making these sacrifices on behalf of your fans. I think it's really awesome that you're just as devoted to your fans as they are to you.

I love the HBO adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, but NOTHING can stand up to the absolute greatness that are your books. I'm eagerly (and patiently) waiting for the release of The Winds of Winter. I know it will be a truly epic experience!

Thank you for being so patient with your fans, even the crazy ones. And thank you for giving us this masterpiece of literature that will be hailed as a true classic for years to come!

TWOW release date
Hey George,
I know a lot of people here are anxious about when the new book is coming out (I'm certainly one of them) but that is foolish of them. As a fan, I beseech you to TAKE ALL THE TIME YOU NEED. In 50 years no one is going to care how long it took you to finish the series, it's the quality of writing that counts, so don't rush your work for our sake, I would happily wait another 5 years for an excellent book than 2 for a mediocre scramble of words.
Don't get pressured into making your legacy hasty.

Dear George,

I've seen your blog mentioned twice today on reddit (I'm subbed to ASOIAF on there). The first post was about you hinting at the near-future completion of Winds of Winter which sent everyone buzzing. Now, hours later, I see this second post and had to chuckle because "Shot Through the Heart" started to play on my spotify as I read your comment about premature celebration. Which is how I imagine many people probably felt after they got so hyped up on the speculation of the earlier post.

I am not an LJ user so I was pleasantly surprised to see anyone could comment on your blog. This makes me really happy because I can tell you directly that I am a huge fan of your works (not just ASOIAF, but Sandkings especially!). I look forward to Winds of Winter and hopefully seeing you one day at a con or book-signing.

All the best!

First time to ever write an author. .
I know that you are very busy sir..but I wanted to take a moment and thank you for "The Ice Dragon".. I was deeply and sincerely moved by it's elegance, it's humanity, and the purity of bond between Adara and the Ice Dragon as well as the sacrificial and selfless gift that The Ice Dragon gave to Adara.. Thank you for this story.. I look forward to sharing it with my young daughter when she is old enough, (but not too old!) Briefly, thank you also for TSOIAF.. I am going back through all of them (again) in preparation for TWOW and find new layers continuously.. I feel like you must have felt writing Stan Lee & Jack Kirby writing this, but hopefully whether you are able to respond or not this thank you reaches you from a Texan living in North Dakota, where The Winds of Winter are never far from our reality, but where we also truly Dream of Spring..

Too bad, Mom and I go every year and it would be a thrill to see you there and get your autograph. But that's an excellent reason.

Sad?
Don't be sad. Why are you sad?
Just with this comment about WoW you made an entire country of fans put their heads out of the window to breath fresh air. This was refreshing. Cheers up, Mr. Martin! Don't be sad.

Son of Kong?
Does that mean A Dream of Spring is Kong?

Winds of Winter
George R R Martin, First of his Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm.

Please dont let them start season 6 without giving your VERY dedicated readers Winds first. I beg you.

Respectfully,

Re: Winds of Winter
The show is, as far as I can tell, different from the books. Similar to Dexter and True Blood, for instance. I noticed the show began to (noticably) diverge in Season 3.

"The show is the show, and the text is the text." as George said once.
