Conventions and Cancellations

A couple of posts down, I announced that I had decided to cancel a couple of my planned appearances for 2015, namely the World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga and the San Diego Comicon.

As seems to happen with everything I post these days, this was immediately misinterperted and misreported.  The usual game of internet telephone took place, and suddenly it was being said that I had cancelled ALL my planned appearances for 2015.  This immediately triggered a flood of emails, and comments here on the blog, from fans who had bought memberships in Norwescon or Conquest or Sasquan in order to see me, and were now worried that I was not coming.

No.  Not so.  Listen, please.  I am skipping San Diego Comicon and World Fantasy Con... but as of this writing, I am still planning on making all of my other scheduled appearances.  Okay?  Clear?  That means, yes, I will be in Seattle for Norwescon next week, and yes, I will be going to Kansas City for Conquest over Memorial Day.  And so forth.  And so on.

Please note that at both of these cons, I am a guest of honor. They invited me years ago, and have been advertising my participation for many months.  Fans and readers have planned accordingly.  I would not feel right in pulling out of an obligation like this, except perhaps in cases of medical or family emergency, and that does not apply here.  At San Diego and Saratoga I was not a GOH, just a program participant, attending largely on my own hook.  Makes it much easier to withdraw.

It is possible that I may withdraw from some other announced appearances later in the year... most likely in the summer and fall... but if I do, it won't be from cons where I am the featured guest of honor.  I would prefer not to have to cancel anything, but that depends on how the work is going.

And by "work," I mean WINDS OF WINTER, of course... but not exclusively WINDS OF WINTER.   When I say, "my plate is full," I don't just mean with WINDS.  I am still editing the latest Wild Cards volume, HIGH STAKES.   I have an overall deal with HBO, and three new television concepts in various stages of development, with a variety of collaborators and partners.   I am consulting on a couple of videogames.   There's the Wild Cards movie at Universal, where I'm a producer.  And I've recently formed a new production company to make low budget short films based on a trio of classic short stories by... well, no, not yet, that would be telling.  Premature telling.

(Many of these other projects may come to nothing.  Such is the dance of development as they do it in Hollywood.  If anything ever actually comes to fruition, you will read about it here.  Till then, don't hold your breath).

Anyway, I'm busy.  But please note, most of these other projects involve me editing, producing, consulting, or financing.  The writing I'm doing is all on WINDS OF WINTER.

Speaking of which... after wrestling with it for a month or so, I've decided not to script an episode for season six of GAME OF THRONES.  Writing a script takes me three weeks, minimum, and longer when it is not a straight adaptation from the novels.  And really, it would cost me more time than that, since I have never been good at changing gears from one medium to another and back again. Writing a season six script would cost me a month's work on WINDS, and maybe as much as six weeks,  and I cannot afford that.   With David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Bryan Cogman on board, the scriptwriting chores for season six should be well covered.  My energies are best devoted to WINDS.

So... back to it.

Whenever I read "WINDS" or "WINDS OF WINTER" my eyes widened. But awesome news about Wild Cards, perhaps its about time I got to those.

These entertainment sites always go for a catchy headline and people don't even care to read the article itself.
Any plans to come to Brazil?

Good luck with all of this!
How I wish you had less on your plate! One man shouldn't work that hard on so many things simultaneously. I wish you some peace of mind and quiet time for yourself. Too bad for that GoT script, even if yours are usually the better one ;)

In the movie Toy Story 2 when Al asks how long it was gonna take to fix Woody...the repair guy says, "You can't rush art."

Keep doing what your doing Mr. Martin. I wish you the best :)

Consulting video games
George, you wrote you're consulting some video games. Does that include Telltale's Game of Thrones?

Re: Consulting video games
Not to speak for the man, but in the past it's been mentioned that Ty Franck, his personal assistant, is helping to keep Telltale's game on track. Ty Franck is a Sci Fi writer in his own right. Google 'The Expanse' for details.

The news that there is personal collaboration on a video game, though, is encouraging. For Generation X and beyond, video games have been as much a part of their childhood (if not much more) as any book or movie or TV show. Even as games have developed by leaps and bounds over the years, I've regretted that too many Baby Boomer SciFi fans never seem to develop a view of them that goes much past PacMan eating pellets and dodging ghosts to get the high score.

Are you allowed to say what video games? Are they just asoiaf stuff or other ip?

You should do a Let's Play for Telltale's Game of Thrones, or the Crusader Kings II mod. It'd be fun to see your reactions and decisions. (as if you need more stuff to do lol, but it would be amaaaziiiing)

Yes. Yeessssss.

Mr. Martin, if in the future you ever want to simultaneously raise money for a charity and cause the SoIaF-following internet to spontaneously combust, volunteer to do a livestream of the Crusader Kings II Game of Thrones mod, even if it's only for an hour or so. Seriously. I think it would absolutely blow your mind how detailed it is, while also blowing the minds of the creators and fans to see you playing it.

...ok, shutting up now. Sorry, but damn if that isn't a seed that needs planting, on even the slightest chance it may one day bloom into something wonderful.

"and yes, I will be going to Kansas City for Conquest over Memorial Day"

Thank you, good sir. You're always a welcome guest here, even when you aren't literally the guest of honor. :)

ASOIAF Deluxe Leather Set
Hi George,

Earlier today you posted on twitter a picture of the 5 A Song of Ice and Fire books but they were limited Deluxe Leathercloth Boxed Set. Where are these books available? You have a lot of people heavily interested.

Thank you,
PJ

Bowling for time
Sounds like a full plate for sure. How about Silva Lanes? Aside from Meow Wolf's efforts, any of your energy being cast there? Planning a trip for Q4 2015 or Q1 2016 and would enjoy a stroll through unique art.

Re: Bowling for time
I am renovating the building... by which I mean my contractor is renovating the building. My part is writing checks. Once the renovations are done, Meow Wolf steps in.

At what point do you relax? By the way, tomorrow this entry will be taken to mean Winds is coming out next week. Take it easy Mr. Martin.

Cons
I do hope to catch you at a Philadelphia con one of these years, George! (Although, I'm not sure why anyone would want to spend the weekend here when places like Saratoga and San Diego are on the table, haha)

Conquest Kc
Hello, Mr. Martin.
I just would like to say thank you. I live in Kansas and yes Conquest has been advertising that you are coming as a 'Guest of Honor' and I was thrilled with happiness. I know you are busy currently writing and editing and it reasonable for you to cancel and I would of understand. Thank you. I'll see you here at Kansas.

Misinterpretation
Could you also correct the journalists who misinterpreted your editor's declaration of "Winds of Winter not in our 2015 publishing schedule" and transformed it in "Winds of Winter NOT IN 2015"?

I don't expect to see WoW in 2015 of course, but it really baffles me when journalists over-interpret something that is basically non-information.

I don't think I've commented before but I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry you're having to cancel "extracurricular" plans to work on WOW. I can't imagine how horrible it feels to have so much pressure on you to produce. I know you get these messages from time to time, but I figured you could do with one more to nudge the ratio of nice comments to greedy ones a little bit higher.

This fan, at least, wishes you somewhat of a normal life as you write. I'd rather you enjoy yourself and create a great book in your own time than slave away to placate ungrateful fans.

Have a great weekend!

I totally second that. ASOIAF is a great series and I'm looking forward to Winds, but there is a ton of other books worth reading in the meantime. *looks at her precariously leaning TBR pile* The winds will blow when they are ready. Probably developed into a nice storm by then. :-)

BTW, if anyone here loves historical fiction I'd recommend to check out Dorothy Dunnett. Her Niccolò and Lymond series together are 14 books of triple-twisted political and financial intrigues, great characters, love and hatred, travels all over Europe and beyond, some mysterious geneaology, and a rapier wielding rascal. :-) Also a fun read is the 7 books Rome series by the late Colleen McCullough. Not related to the HBO series, but it has the sex and intrigue to match it.
