Conventions and Cancellations

A couple of posts down, I announced that I had decided to cancel a couple of my planned appearances for 2015, namely the World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga and the San Diego Comicon.

As seems to happen with everything I post these days, this was immediately misinterperted and misreported.  The usual game of internet telephone took place, and suddenly it was being said that I had cancelled ALL my planned appearances for 2015.  This immediately triggered a flood of emails, and comments here on the blog, from fans who had bought memberships in Norwescon or Conquest or Sasquan in order to see me, and were now worried that I was not coming.

No.  Not so.  Listen, please.  I am skipping San Diego Comicon and World Fantasy Con... but as of this writing, I am still planning on making all of my other scheduled appearances.  Okay?  Clear?  That means, yes, I will be in Seattle for Norwescon next week, and yes, I will be going to Kansas City for Conquest over Memorial Day.  And so forth.  And so on.

Please note that at both of these cons, I am a guest of honor. They invited me years ago, and have been advertising my participation for many months.  Fans and readers have planned accordingly.  I would not feel right in pulling out of an obligation like this, except perhaps in cases of medical or family emergency, and that does not apply here.  At San Diego and Saratoga I was not a GOH, just a program participant, attending largely on my own hook.  Makes it much easier to withdraw.

It is possible that I may withdraw from some other announced appearances later in the year... most likely in the summer and fall... but if I do, it won't be from cons where I am the featured guest of honor.  I would prefer not to have to cancel anything, but that depends on how the work is going.

And by "work," I mean WINDS OF WINTER, of course... but not exclusively WINDS OF WINTER.   When I say, "my plate is full," I don't just mean with WINDS.  I am still editing the latest Wild Cards volume, HIGH STAKES.   I have an overall deal with HBO, and three new television concepts in various stages of development, with a variety of collaborators and partners.   I am consulting on a couple of videogames.   There's the Wild Cards movie at Universal, where I'm a producer.  And I've recently formed a new production company to make low budget short films based on a trio of classic short stories by... well, no, not yet, that would be telling.  Premature telling.

(Many of these other projects may come to nothing.  Such is the dance of development as they do it in Hollywood.  If anything ever actually comes to fruition, you will read about it here.  Till then, don't hold your breath).

Anyway, I'm busy.  But please note, most of these other projects involve me editing, producing, consulting, or financing.  The writing I'm doing is all on WINDS OF WINTER.

Speaking of which... after wrestling with it for a month or so, I've decided not to script an episode for season six of GAME OF THRONES.  Writing a script takes me three weeks, minimum, and longer when it is not a straight adaptation from the novels.  And really, it would cost me more time than that, since I have never been good at changing gears from one medium to another and back again. Writing a season six script would cost me a month's work on WINDS, and maybe as much as six weeks,  and I cannot afford that.   With David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Bryan Cogman on board, the scriptwriting chores for season six should be well covered.  My energies are best devoted to WINDS.

So... back to it.

deluxe edition
I think you referenced a limited edition illustrated volume of ASOIAF in the Sible Kekilli piece you posted. By the way that was a great video, which made me want to visit Santa Fe. Plus, Sible just seemed really down earth and up for anything. But back to that illustrated volume has that already been released or put on pre-sale? You always are dead on when choosing artist to portray your thoughts, and I would love to get this numbered edition. Your minions posted a Twitter link, but I think that was just leatherbound hardcover.

Hello there.
I do understand why people can get so obsessed with this, but well, that just shows how great your work is...
“As long as it doesn’t get physical, it’s just love.”, or so they say...
For me, what you’ve done has already “lit the spark”. Although that’s almost an oxymoron, thanks and best wishes ;).

Whatever happens George, I hope you never have to cancel any nights of margaritas and chips with queso. Keep up the good work!

About certain new TV concept...
"and three new television concepts in various stages of development".
Hope one of those three is a Tuf Voyaging TV series!

George... One question...

What is your favorite thing to eat while writing?

Id go with the meal Illyrio and Tyrion enjoyed in Pentos, but okra pickles is a close second. Dont ask why...

Thanks George!
Made a livejournal just so I could say thank you! It's good to hear clarification.

I was lucky enough to get to meet you last year when you came to ConCarolinas. It was one of the highlights of my summer! You were very nice, even though one of my copies was a book club edition...

As a long-time fan of the books, I must thank you for choosing to keep up your excellent work on Winds of Winter instead of focusing on TV scripts.
Good luck against the new Kong!

livin' the life
Don't worry George. After Winds comes out you will get a couple of weeks to live your life before people start asking when A Dream of Spring is coming out!

Game of Thrones is a beautiful story with mortal kombats !!. Please make a fighting game ! made by mortal kombat, street fighter, guilty gear, king of fighters...creators!!! It must be good and made by the best.

Easy fix to all these problems
Lord Martin you owe us fans nothing! You have given us a fantastic world to enjoy and escape to in the best epic fantasy novels of our generation. I used your books in 2004 (wasn't a big fantasy reader then) to escape the realities of war in Iraq in between patrols in Baghdad. I am forever in your debt for the books because they truly helped get my mind off of horrible things and allowed me to unplug from the war in Iraq and go to the one in westeros and beyond. However there are constant issues with the media, which is an oxymoron in itself but never the less, spinning every word you say into money for their coffers by posting misleading and unfounded reports on the status and release of "kong"! There is a simple fix to this! I know you have had problems in the past from fans harassing you when you don't get a book done when you thought you would to now people harassing you for not livng up to false reports by the "frey's" in the media! The simple answer would be a periodic update of where you are at in terms of progress in finishing "kong"! Not saying you should give us estimated dates or even exact page counts. You shouldn't nor do I expect you to do anything a simple hedge knight as myself tells you to do. Just a suggestion that perhaps you could every now and again say, "hey, things are going well and I'm 3 quarters of the way there" for example or whatever you feel is appropriate ma lord. This would give no room for misleading horrible journalism or idiot fans beating on your door because you didnt hit your date. But hey, what do I know about being a rock star author who deals with the everyday pressures of writing the most anticipated novel ever. No ma lord, I know that pressure not! The only pressure I know is fighting on the line in the 2/12 Cav of the 1st cavalry Division in America's Night's watch. Just a bastard hedge knight offering advice to a king! Almost sounds like a novel!!!

Re: Easy fix to all these problems
I used to do just what you are suggesting. It caused me nothing but headaches.

the superficial readers
I'm not a natural english reader, but it was very clear to me that you only had withdraw from those two appearance. The reason of my comment is to expose a concern: the superficial readers. I don't known if this confusion is about a quick read of your post or if is about bad intention... By the way, sorry for my poor english, and good work! We all hope for your success!

Mister Martin, can you please tell us which genre is your personal favourite, Science fiction or medieval fantasy? I know that the answer will probably be BOTH, but deep down we all have a favourite. Thnak you kind sir !

I have favorite books and favorite writers. I don't have favorite genres. I think genre labels are a bad thing, actually.

Hi George. The clickbait journalism pertaining to your progress on Winds is infuriating. It is very difficult to ascertain what is and isn't genuine.

I found the below quote recently, attributed to you, but am not sure of its validity:

Meanwhile, I'm writing 'The Winds of Winter.' I'm not done with it yet. I still have a lot of pages to write, but I also have a lot of pages that are already written. So, I don't know. I try not to worry about things like this. I just, you know, go in every day and write the scene that I'm trying to write that day and try to make it as good as I can.

John Snow's mother
Since my son Murray started reading we have been also listening to books on tape together. We were a bit late to show up at the Game of Thrones party and want to absorb the books fully first before seeing them realized onscreen. Murray has always been good at absorbing details and predicting outcomes and he thinks that John Snow is not Ned stark's son at all, but rather the offspring of Regar and Liana, a child of rape and, as such, The Once and Future King. This also makes Ned an even more honorable man than already depicted as he would have weathered his wife's smouldering anger for an infidelity he did not commit. We are staying tuned!
