Conventions and Cancellations

A couple of posts down, I announced that I had decided to cancel a couple of my planned appearances for 2015, namely the World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga and the San Diego Comicon.

As seems to happen with everything I post these days, this was immediately misinterperted and misreported.  The usual game of internet telephone took place, and suddenly it was being said that I had cancelled ALL my planned appearances for 2015.  This immediately triggered a flood of emails, and comments here on the blog, from fans who had bought memberships in Norwescon or Conquest or Sasquan in order to see me, and were now worried that I was not coming.

No.  Not so.  Listen, please.  I am skipping San Diego Comicon and World Fantasy Con... but as of this writing, I am still planning on making all of my other scheduled appearances.  Okay?  Clear?  That means, yes, I will be in Seattle for Norwescon next week, and yes, I will be going to Kansas City for Conquest over Memorial Day.  And so forth.  And so on.

Please note that at both of these cons, I am a guest of honor. They invited me years ago, and have been advertising my participation for many months.  Fans and readers have planned accordingly.  I would not feel right in pulling out of an obligation like this, except perhaps in cases of medical or family emergency, and that does not apply here.  At San Diego and Saratoga I was not a GOH, just a program participant, attending largely on my own hook.  Makes it much easier to withdraw.

It is possible that I may withdraw from some other announced appearances later in the year... most likely in the summer and fall... but if I do, it won't be from cons where I am the featured guest of honor.  I would prefer not to have to cancel anything, but that depends on how the work is going.

And by "work," I mean WINDS OF WINTER, of course... but not exclusively WINDS OF WINTER.   When I say, "my plate is full," I don't just mean with WINDS.  I am still editing the latest Wild Cards volume, HIGH STAKES.   I have an overall deal with HBO, and three new television concepts in various stages of development, with a variety of collaborators and partners.   I am consulting on a couple of videogames.   There's the Wild Cards movie at Universal, where I'm a producer.  And I've recently formed a new production company to make low budget short films based on a trio of classic short stories by... well, no, not yet, that would be telling.  Premature telling.

(Many of these other projects may come to nothing.  Such is the dance of development as they do it in Hollywood.  If anything ever actually comes to fruition, you will read about it here.  Till then, don't hold your breath).

Anyway, I'm busy.  But please note, most of these other projects involve me editing, producing, consulting, or financing.  The writing I'm doing is all on WINDS OF WINTER.

Speaking of which... after wrestling with it for a month or so, I've decided not to script an episode for season six of GAME OF THRONES.  Writing a script takes me three weeks, minimum, and longer when it is not a straight adaptation from the novels.  And really, it would cost me more time than that, since I have never been good at changing gears from one medium to another and back again. Writing a season six script would cost me a month's work on WINDS, and maybe as much as six weeks,  and I cannot afford that.   With David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Bryan Cogman on board, the scriptwriting chores for season six should be well covered.  My energies are best devoted to WINDS.

So... back to it.

So exciting to hear that you're hard at work on Winds :D. Personally I hope you take your time to create the best possible version of the book, and I do hope the show doesn't have any influence on the writing. I am reading the series for the second time and it's truly a treat. I very much look forward to delving into Winds of Winter when it's released :)

Taking time
George, Do what you must with appearances. After a reread of Dance and Feast, this time with isolated POVs (just the Dany/Barristans, or just the Jaime/Cersei's) I really have to add my voice to the crowd saying to take your time. Sure, we all want plot gratification. To that I say, I came for the ASOIAF plot, but I STAY for the seemingly bottomless treasure of these character arches, the little references, the people, the world, and the hearts being pulled in two different directions.

I shook your hand in Chicago (BWOB party a few years ago…my wife and I told you about our wedding having the GOT theme song in our ceremony) and I told you how much your books mean to me, and I just want to say it again: your writing has been with me in the good and bad, and I find I keep coming back to your very awesome story. The depth of what is happening in these POVs is awesome. I keep finding new nuggets, or a theme I didn't notice before. And I look forward to Dany's next step. Everyone's next step, really. I think they finally see what must be done now. Just wanted you to know as a fan, I love your work.

And I thought I worked hard.
And I also thought life was supposed to get calmer once you passed a certain age!
You're putting us to shame, mate.
If you plan a holiday from this all - where would you go and/or what would you do?

Its a wonder you comment at all.....
Given that fact that anything you say on here is immediately plastered on yahoo news and rampant speculation begins, its a wonder that you take the time to share your plans/thoughts at all with us.

I know you love your fans, but this has to about make you want to pull your hair out from time to time....

With the risk of sounding like a complete fanboy, I for one want to say that I appreciate the info and updates you give, and hope that this fever pitch circus atmosphere doesn't change how you 'don't blog' here.

A huge shame you have to pass on writing a Game of Thrones script again this year. Hopefully you'll have some time to write one for the hypothetical seventh season! :)

Regarding The Winds of Winter, I'm sure it'll be well worth the wait. I know I speak for many fellow Ice and Fire fans when I say thank you for all of the hard work you've done and continue to do for this incredible series.

Contact info?
I know this goes directly against your last post about comments being off-topic, and I really do want to apologize in advance.. but is there an email address that one could email you at? I swear its not for stalking purposes or anything else ridiculous ;) I checked all over your site and could not find one (not saying that I didn't overlook it...)

In other on-topic thoughts-- I can understand how some would be disappointed at an appearance being cancelled.. I am a HUGE fan and have made the same of all of my family and close friends..you are amazing. But at the same time, I surely hope that most understand that you are only human and need time to yourself and to relax. I cannot imagine how stressful it would be to have deadlines that you are trying to meet all while traveling around the country. As much as I would LOVE to meet you, I have come to accept that I live in the middle of nowhere, which is great when you want to be surrounded by woods, but not so much when you want to meet your favorite author :(

Appreciation/moral support
Its my first time commenting so I just wanted to say thank you for the countless hours of joy and friends that I've made through your series. Also thank you for dedicating so much time and effort into the winds book, I know your job isn't easy and I love the universe you have created and know that the time in between books is what allows you to produce such quality works. So here is just a little kinds in support as you continue on. You also have extremely intrigued as to the nature of the other projects with HBO. My fingers are crossed for a Dunk and Egg series or a robert's rebellion one. But I guess I'll have to wait and see on that one. Heres to hoping that people stop blowing things out of proportion and take them out of context. Have a lovely evening.

Huge fan of your work George, and since you mentioned ASoIaF in this post, I would like to take this opportunity to ask you, if you're aware that Stannis has a pretty big and devoted following among the readers? It is known that you love Tyrion and he is your favourite character, and a lot of people's favourite character, but Stannis has a lot of devoted fans as well (me included). I would just like to know your thoughts on that, because unlike some other characters (Oberyn, Ned, ser Grandfather), this one is a bit counter-intuitive. I am just wondering if he is one of your secretly most favourited characters to write about as well. I hope my question is not spoilerish.
