Joining Sasquan

The Hugo Awards, the center of the controversy that has plunged all fandom into war, will be awarded this summer at Sasquan, the 2015 World Science Fiction in Spokane, Washington.

I have been going to Worldcons for a long time. My icon is a picture of me at Torcon II, the 1973 Worldcon in Toronto, where I lost the very first John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Wasn't I cute? It was my second Worldcon, following on Noreascon I in Boston in 1971. (I missed LA in 1972).

You can be a part of Worldcon too. Just go here:

You can buy a Supporting Membership for $40, which will give you the right to vote on this year's Hugo Awards. Whether you vote for the Sad Puppies, or for the Rabid Puppies, or against the Puppies, or vote NO AWARD on everything, or read the work and vote on what you like, or abstain, or elect some combination of all of those... that's up to you. The important thing is that you vote, however you think best.

Even better, you can buy an ATTENDING membership, and actually come to the convention. Usually they are a lot of fun. That's why I keep coming back. Don't believe what you may have heard, we will not be parading about with the heads of puppies impaled on spears.

Come to the party. Everyone is welcome. Don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise.

Hi mr Martin first time poster here

I don't know a lot about the Hugo scene but after reading how passionate you are about them It has got me interested. I also really appericiate your civilty and willingness to talk to the other side , the world could do with more of this attitude.

Impaled animals
While there will be no heads of puppies impaled on spears being paraded about, perhaps there will be a Dire Wolf or two, yeah? Something all sides can rally around.

Purchasing an attending membership and coming dressed as Harma Dogshead would be in poor taste?

Psh, talk about buzzkill. :P

Re: So...
You might win the Masquerade. You'd make a lot of enemies, though... and maybe a few friends as well.

Thanks for the invite
Would love to attend, if only to be a barfly in the evenings and listen to the chatter from other attendees. I wish all sides luck, and a harmonious gathering. Who knows maybe some progress can come from all this rancor. Hope springs eternal someone once said.....

Less politics - more awesome fiction folks! Let's keep our priorities straight!! :)

I'm in
I'm no Sad Puppy - at least not when it comes to my fiction tastes - and I've just registered for my first WorldCon as a supporting member. Woo hoo!

Forgive me for going off topic but it is certainly a shock seeing a photo of you without a beard.

we will not be parading about with the heads of puppies impaled on spears.

You never let us have any fun...

See you there, I hope.

admiration to the GRRM OF THEN AND NOW
I admire your approach going forward. Not only are you my favorite author, favorite Social Justice Warrior, but also my favorite human. We should all try to live our ethics by the examples we set. In other words you are an excellent living example of morals and ethics i hold dear and man is that cool that you also are the creator of some of the most evocative and eloquent fictional prose to ever grace a page! Super GURM!! YOU. ROCK! Now, i hope no more Puppy-hype steals valuable TWoW creating time. DOWN PUPPIES! DOWN!

Thanks for promoting the link to the supporting membership signup page - I was beginning to wonder why no one on the anti-Puppy side was doing that. In all this kerfuffle, I haven't seen any variation of the sentiment, "What a golden opportunity to get more people involved in sci-fi fandom."

By the by, does anyone else find it amusing that the phrase, "a sudden influx of new Hugo voters" describes a) the perceived injustice that rallied the puppies in to existence, b) the puppies themselves, and c) the most obvious solution to the damage they've caused?

I know we have many friends in common. I hope to see you at Sasquan and we can raise a glass to the genre we love. I am travelling halfway around the world for this. I will not have it spoiled.

Usually when I look at pictures from 30 years ago, I say "You had more hair back then." In your case, you actually had less hair back then.

I'll see you there
And I bought a supporting membership for my stepdad. I'm hoping he'll want to upgrade and come along. Least I could do for the guy, he sent me your books. :)

If only it wasn't the other end of the country
Would love to come. But its a long way from Boston. I have a couple of Daleks that like to go to these things on occasion as well. They know a thing or two about dealing with sad puppies.

I think we should all create characters called some variation on Vox Day and kill them off in the most gruesome fashion possible.

Apr. 16th, 2015 10:14 pm (UTC)
Ahh, but if there were puppy heads on spears, you could tell everyone, in a conspiratorial whisper, "the Worldcon remembers."

A new plot entirely
Actually, I have abandoned that idea for a completely new plot in which a pair of Hollywood producers are making a hit series in which characters are being slaughtered at a prodigious rate.

Things take a turn for the worse however when the writer of the series is distracted by an attempt to rig the voting in a writing contest he has won previously. How do they get him back to the word processor?

Desperate to ensure renewal of the contract that is making them rich, each producer independently decides to remedy the situation in the fashion of one of the show's characters.
