Movie Magic

Santa Fe has a new movie theatre.

A brand-new Violet Crown multiplex opens today in the Railyard, with 11 screens, big loungers, gourmet food (including pizza), and beer and wine.

Parris and I attended their "soft opening" yesterday, meeting and mingling with Bill Banowsky of Violet Crown, VIPs from the Railyard Corporation and the local film community, and various dignitaries from the city and state... including former Governor Bill Richardson, whose administration really helped to put New Mexico on the map in television and film.

It was a gala event, and the Violet Crown is a gorgeous facility. They are only two blocks down from the Jean Cocteau, but we're friendly neighbors, and between us we hope to make the historic Railyard distinct THE place to see a movie in Santa Fe. There are plenty of great movies out there (old and new) for all of us.

The Violet Crown will be opening to the public today with AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.

Down the street, at the Jean Cocteau, we will be showing ROAR.

See you at the movies!!

Wow, that trailer looks crazy! The "Review quotes" said it perfectly.

One of these days I'll make it to Santa Fe for a visit. I've been to ABQ once for work, but wasn't able to take the trip to see the Jean Cocteau.

Oh, god, what a great weekend to be opening a multiplex, and what a great couple of treasures within a few blocks! I hope everybody has a wonderful time!

I'd love to see this movie. An old acquaintance of mine (Mike Ragogna) was involved in writing and performing on the soundtrack. I heard him play some of the music years ago, but have always wanted to hear it in the context of the film. I hope the audience enjoys the show.

Re: avengers
Hope so.

Of course, Tony Stark did not really build Ultron. That was Hank Pym.

Re: avengers
They missed a perfect opportunity to sub in Pym instead of the scientist character that Stellan Skarsgard played in the first movie!

Re: avengers
HAH! I went to see the new Avengers: Age of Ultron, last night. My partner went on about Ant Man being the true creator of Ultron too. You nerds sheeesh. Besides that how did you like it. I wish I lived between your two theaters. I have to drive 45 minutes out of the redwood forest to find a theater here on the Lost Coast. We LOST!

Re: avengers
George, I need an answer to this. Who is your favorite comic book-villain of all time?

Re: avengers
Define "villain."

I like grey characters. Hero/ villains.

Re: avengers
Grey characters are the best (The Hound and Tyrion come to mind). Thanos is my favorite as far as Marvel goes. He has a bit of grey in him at least in the sense that he sabotages himself (as if he wants to be stopped) and that his motivations require doing evil in the name of love.

They have a couple of theaters like this in the Phoenix area and I enjoy going to them. They don't actually have Violet Crown but have iPic which is very upscale and Studio Movie Grill and AMC Dine In Theaters which are less swanky but still awesome. I don't really go to the movies that much but when I do it's usually for an event movie like Avengers 2 and I'll definitely be hitting it up in style at one of the aforementioned places. Should be great to have one of these right by your theater!

There's only one other Violet Crown that I know of, and that's in Austin (The term "violet crown" refers to the frequent color of the sunset in Austin). At this rate, you'll have an Alamo Drafthouse soon.

I watched Ex Machina a few days ago at a local art house theater and saw the Roar preview. I had never been to this particular theater before but I really liked the vibe of the crowd and the all around atmosphere of the place. I imagine the Cocteau is interesting in a similar manner. I think I will go back to see Roar; it looks great. If only I was a little closer to New Mexico. One day!
