Conquest Bound

I hear that everything is up to date in Kansas City, so I am heading that way to check it out for myself. Next weekend I will be Editor Guest of Honor at Conquest, KC's long-running regional con, and one of my very favorites. I went to my first KC con in 1972 (where I finally met Howard Waldrop, with whom I'd been exchanging letters since 1963), and have been coming back when I can ever since. The 1976 worldcon in KC -- MidAmericon -- still ranks as the best worldcon of all time, in my not so humble opinion. Even if I did lose two Hugos there.

So if any of you are in Kansas or Missouri or within driving distance, do come join us. You can check out the basics on the con here: http://www.conquestkc.org/

I should underline the fact that I am the Editor GOH at Conquest (Brandon Sanderson is the Author Guest of Honor). I've been editing books just as long as I've been writing them (the first book I ever published was one I'd edited, not one I'd written), and to date I've been editor or co-editor on thirty-eight anthologies, with number thirty-nine on the way. Yet this will be be the first time that any con has ever honored me for my editorial work.

Yes, I will be reading a chapter from THE WINDS OF WINTER there, and yes, I'll talk about ICE AND FIRE and my other writing... but the emphasis at Conquest will be on my editing, especially the WILD CARDS series, and one of my two scheduled autograph sessions will be limited to the anthologies I've edited. Just sayin'.

And of course, I expect to find some burnt ends as well... dragon-charred, no doubt...

I'm very excited about next weekend! I'm looking forward to your reading, of course, but I'm also looking forward to the panel on world building with Sanderson, too...plus Conquest announced recently that there will be an Iron Throne at the convention. This will be my first opportunity to snag a photo on it!

I am a bit disappointed that Sanderson doesn't have a reading of his own scheduled, but it should be a busy enough weekend as it is, especially with Spectrum Fantastic Art Live the same weekend and hotel block. I'm hoping to find a nice ASOIAF piece to purchase from Gianni, Giancola, or Karla Ortiz, depending on what they have.

This is my first time going to Conquest, I am very excited for the reading. Do you have any advice on whether Ballroom A is likely to reach capacity/how early to line up?

Enjoy your trip and those burnt ends. Yum. One of my favorites, too. I won't be there because of work obligations. I'm a devoted follower of your writing and editing. You are a man of many talents. I loved those spinner racks in the drugstore as well when I was young. I live in Springfield, MO and it pains me to be so close and not get to be there. Anyhow, merry travels to you. I'll hope to hear how it went. Thank you for the many hours of reading enjoyment you have given me.

I hear they've gone about as far as they can go.

a skyscraper SEVEN stories tall?! what WILL they think of next?
May. 19th, 2015 01:50 am (UTC)
And you have edited ...
... quite some fun anthologies. 'Dangerous Women' recently appeared here in Germany, and it was quite a fun to read - again (especially since I could also help work with the translation of Archmaester Gyldayn's 'Die Prinzessin und die Königin').

As to the reading: Give them the Prologue! Your Prologues and Epilogues are usually among the best pieces of works in the books.

TWOW Chapter
Hello George! Just wondering, is the chapter you are reading at Conquest one you have already released or is it something new? Thanks!

Re: TWOW Chapter
Rumor has it, he read the Alayne chapter currently posted on his website

ConQuest profile
The profile that they've written for you on the website is kind of odd. They talk about your TV work, but not Game of Thrones (if it was just that, I'd commend them on resisting the urge) or even A Song of Ice and Fire. In fact, the only book of yours they mention by name is "The Hero". And then if it wasn't already weird enough, they mention your past marriage but not your current one.

Re: ConQuest profile
George is the Editor Guest of Honor at this event, so my assumptions is that putting focus on A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE in his biography would negate this and take the attention away from Brandon Sandersons works (as he is the Author Guest of Honor). Just my hunch on it.

Congratulations as GoH Editor.
I think it must be really difficult to evaluate an editor work.
Will you be reading a new chapter of TWoW?
Any change for you to post a video for us to see it?

So many barbecue joints, so little time. I wish I didn't have so much going on this weekend, I'd grab a ticket and swing by the convention. But, I hope you manage to get to Joe's Kansas City BBQ (formerly Oklahoma Joe's) and pick up a Z-Man.

Dammit, now I want one.

Re: Z-Man!
Agree with getting the Z-Man. Go to Joe's KC instead of Burnt End or Jack Stack like someone else suggested

I'm a Kansas City native, born and raised, and I think I can speak for the Sci Fi/Fantasy nerds among us at least in saying you're always welcome here. :)

And perhaps in contrast to many, I would actually welcome hearing your views as an editor even above your views as a writer. I've seen a number of interviews in which you speak about the latter, but none in which I've seen you speak about the former.

Sometime I'd like to see you write about the process of editing an anthology. (Maybe I've missed if you've already done that.)

Examples: How do you (you personally) divide up responsibility with multiple editors? Do you accept submissions only from writers you've expressly invited, or do you announce open submissions and review a slush pile? Do you actively edit each story and ask for revisions, or is it more of a yes/no choice? And I'm curious about the whole process of contracts, rights, budgets, deadlines, and the time frame from proposing the concept to actual publication.

Dragon-charred? Oh well, this time I was hoping you'd read the Damphair chapter you teased a couple of years ago.
May. 19th, 2015 04:46 am (UTC)
I think you'll get a kick out of this due to the recent offendatron outrage

Milo Yiannopoulos:
Amazed at the people moaning about Game of Thrones. If there’s a fictional rape to be angry about surely it’s the one in Rolling Stone

Hopefully this time nobody will have to go dumpster-diving for them burnt ends...

It kills me that this convention is on the same weekend as one of my other major yearly shindigs, but there's just no helping it. Have a great time with all the Usual Suspects. I hope to see y'all very soon.

Hello George! I just wanted to know are we going to hear a Jon Snow chapter from TWOW?
May. 30th, 2015 12:55 am (UTC)
I doubt you're going to get an answer to that question until the book comes out as a confirmation now would be a huge spoiler.
May. 19th, 2015 09:06 am (UTC)
will it be a new chapter? perhabs the Drowned God's Prophet's chapter that you talked about a couple of years ago? Maybe even a glimpse at young Aegon taking Storm's End? all men must dream...
