Wars, Woes, Work

Life is impossibly busy right now. I am wrestling with the Son of Kong (that is, working on THE WINDS OF WINTER), trying to wrap up a final round of edits and revisions on the twenty-third Wild Cards book (HIGH STAKES), developing three new series concepts for HBO and Cinemax, hiring writers and directors for three short low-budget films I am hoping to produce based on some classic SF short stories (more on that in the months to come), making my way through the Hugo Packet to prepare to vote, looking forward to opening JURASSIC WORLD at the Cocteay and to hosting a ten-author special event for the release of Steve Stirling's new "Emberverse" anthology, THE CHANGE. In a week's time, we'll be flying off to Europe for long-planned appearances in Germany (Hamburg) and Sweden (Stockholm), en route to Archipelacon on the island of Aland, where I am to be the Guest of Honor...

In the midst of all this, wars old and new continue to rage all around me.

I had rather hoped that the Puppy Wars would have died down by now. Naive of me. Far from it, things keep getting worse. All the grisly details of this ongoing nastiness can be seen at FILE 770 over at http://file770.com/. ((Mike Glyer deserves the 2016 Best Fanzine Hugo for his even-handed and thorough coverage of Puppygate, linking to virtually everything posted on the subject anywhere on the internet)).

I want to single out the postings of Eric Flint. The latest, at http://www.ericflint.net/index.php/2015/06/09/a-response-to-brad-torgersen/ , is a devastating point-by-point deconstruction and refutation of the latest round of Puppystuff from Brad Torgersen. Flint says what I would have said, if I had the time or the energy, but he says it better than I ever could. ((I will be nominating him for a Hugo too. For Best Fan Writer)). His earlier posts on Puppygate are all worth reading too. He is a voice of reason in a sea of venom.

I will add one point. The emptiness of the Puppy arguments is indicated clearly by how much time they seem to spend in coming up with new insulting terms for those who oppose them. The facts are against them, logic is against them, history is against them, so they go for sneers and mocking names. First it was SJWs. Then CHORFs. The latest is "Puppy-kickers." Next week, no doubt, they will have something else. Reading all the blogs and comments that Glyer links to from FILE 770 has convinced me that anyone who starts throwing these terms around can pretty much be discounted; you will find no sense in what they say, only sneers and talking points.

Meanwhile, other wars are breaking out on other fronts, centered around the last few episodes of GAME OF THRONES. It is not my intention to get involved in those, nor to allow them to take over my blog and website, so please stop emailing me about them, or posting off-topic comments here on my Not A Blog. Wage those battles on Westeros, or Tower of the Hand, or Boiled Leather, or Winter Is Coming, or Watchers on the Walls. Anyplace that isn't here, actually.

Yes, I know that THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER named me "the third most powerful writer in Hollywood" last December. You would be surprised at how little that means. I cannot control what anyone else says or does, or make them stop saying or doing it, be it on the fannish or professional fronts. What I can control is what happens in my books, so I am going to return to that chapter I've been writing on THE WINDS OF WINTER now, thank you very much.

The books, the show
I've learned to see them as two separate but both highly enjoyable works of fiction. I'm looking forward to season 6 but looking forward to Son of Kong even more. Don't listen to the hate George, life is too short and you are too cool! ;)

Keep fighting the good fight
Life can be overwhelming at times, especially when you a lot of irons in the fire. Stay the course and you will rise above it all. Whether or not it feels like it, you have an army of supporters at your back, many of which you serve as an inspiration to.

I look forward to your posts everyday, they remind me not to give up on my own ambitions and creativity.

At least it's not football season. Because then you'd really be in trouble.

The 3 HBO shows is interesting btw.
Can you reveal anything about any of them at this point?

I was one of the people that sent you a message regarding the series. All I can say is that it wasn't my intent to produce any sort of negative emotions. I was just interested in your thoughts regarding the changes, and it never crossed my mind that my comments might upset your or stress you. My bad for not taking into consideration the amount of messages that you receive everyday. Sorry about that...

A counter point of view
A very interesting write up from R.K. Modena. Herself and the others she talks about have walked the walk.

Don't let ye dragon devour you.
Like the mists of Arthurian Legends, Homer's Gods and Marvel Comics myths twist, turn, morph, merge and mutate. The HBO version is just a twist on the Westeros myth..Like Stevie Winwood sang I'd just roll, and wine, with it.

Don't let ye dragon devour you.

This mean eyed internet monster can make men's minds mad.

Anyway as the song says It's all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago...perhaps a fevre dream, no?

Bow down, Son of Kong!
What I can control is what happens in my books, so I am going to return to that chapter I've been writing on THE WINDS OF WINTER now, thank you very much.

Writing is its own revenge
Writing great books is your best revenge.

Over those who put politics over literary quality, those who claim D&D are the genuis behind the Thrones and their version is now "cant", and internet trolls in general.

Just saw a post where those expressing concern about the level of violence on HBO's version where slammed as "SJWs".

The term gets tossed around to avoid having to make reasoned responses by just suggesting critics come from a frozen mindset and so by definition never have a point.

Given where D&D at HBO seem to be going the legacy of Ice and Fire now rests on your forthcoming books (OK no pressure...) As indeed it should...

Winds of what you want
Write what you want, in any order. Attend conventions. Drink tea, at your leisure. Build a new house, decorate it. Read some old science fiction, preferably Stanislaw Lem's "Fiasco", darn your socks, write some winds, scratch your head, beneath your cap, think, I am 43, I will soon die (not really) , spoil the show and books at your leisure, make Shereen die of grayscale, make Jons mother a Tavern whence.... I really don't care. I will read your books when they will be published. Over and out. (this where NOT ironical)..

take your time on the new GoT book
Don't let these fools rush you GM! Take your time on the books. I'd rather wait a decade for a masterpiece than rush something into being less than what it could've been.

Sample Chapters
Mr. Martin mentioned in a previous post (one with closed comments) that he suggested checking out sample chapters on his website to see how ASOIAF is progressing in the books, as opposed to the show. I could only find one sample chapter there, the "Sansa" one. Is there a list of other sample chapters I can get from anyone?

Re: Sample Chapters
You can try westeros.org or their forums. A Google search for TWOW sample chapters should also do the trick.

"Emergency Awesome" a channel on youtube has a a link to all the sample chapters in I believe most of his videos' descriptions.
